Polygon: Xbox Scorpio will be a ~6 TFLOP system (v PS4K's 4.14), unveil soon, Fall 17

A potentially $600/£550 console that's coming 12 months later than the PSNEO is DOA.
They're going to tank Xbone sales so hard... due to this.
Lose money on their Slim model because sales have nose dived as well as lose (hemorrhage) money due to R&D and fabrication costs that they won't recover.

Death of the Xbox brand as we know it.

How in the world do they think this is a good idea?

Announcing a late 2017 release at this year's E3, a move that's 100% sure to kill Xbox One sales, is Microsoft saying "bye" to this console generation. Scorpio is a reset button.

I'm not buying into the promise of support for Xbox One. It'll be dumped within a year of Scorpio's release, as far as 1st party studios are concerned.

You think they would redesign and (presumably) shrink the APU and redesign the controller to then drop it a bit more than a year later?

The power difference was absolutely the reason I bought my ps4 first and it's been my main console when the 360 was my primary last gen.

Power difference absolutely had an effect on sales.

power was definitely a factor for some people but overall it was the least of the reasons

I can't take serious when people say things like it will be X times more powerful...
and then also from that extrapolate teraflops and nothing else.

Also, lol @ them talking about this at next month's E3 when its forecast for late next year

Why announce the next Xbox at E3 2016 if it won't hit shelves until Fall 2017? That would be over a year of hampering Xbox One sales because people will just say "I'm going to wait."

Makes no sense. I think Polygon is being taken for a ride.

So the NX...

I'm thinking (or hoping) that the so-called "Supplemental Computing Device" is something that Nintendo uses for Forward Compatibility and uses it to "keep up with the Jones's" . There is no way Nintendo can drop a home console with the specs of an Xbox One in 2017 no matter what the price is unless they are thinking that the Xbox One will be the baseline spec for most third-party games in the new EcoSystem of consoles.

All that power! I love that new controller.

You don't get the candy if you go there with that. Not saying stick wars but you know. Candy.

Yes but that still doesn't hold up to "Xbox graphics at 540p".

What I'm assuming is that you want it to be able to use modern graphic solutions because you aren't getting Xbox graphics at 540p.
You want a more powerful Vita.

What I meant was that if Nintendo is using Maxwell/Pascal based Tegra, the device will be able to support modern rendering features similar to consoles. So yes, a way more powerful vita.

I'm not questioning the existence of Scorpio.

What I'm critical of is the timing of the announcement so far ahead from the actual launch of the new console.

Have you heard any rumblings as to why MS are willing to let XB1 sales crater for over a year until Scorpio launches? What other logical reason is there, if not to counter NEO's announcement?
Quite simply it's a numbers game and while they have a great plan they don't yet have any games with third parties taking advantage of the extra power. For now they can afford to take a hit with the price over the next year while increasing the value of the buy-in with bundles and position it as the "low to medium" end of the scale of hardware next year.

Then what was the reason? I bought a PS4 over Xbox One at launch because of the power. At launch, there weren't any exclusive games on either console that made you want to buy either system.

Price + Messaging + Microsoft looking stupid. Xbox One's original launch plan gave them the "bad guy of the industry" image for a bit.

Its funny to me that hardware cycles are now getting to be shorter than AAA software development timescales!

I mean seriously, there was just shy of 3 years between TLOU and Uncharted 4. At this rate ND's next full release could potentially skip NEO altogether and ship as a launch title for full-fat PS5.

Every single thread about these iterative console I mention this. It is essentially the biggest problem with these type of cycles. For example the first next-gen Rockstar title will release after the consoles people were expecting them on have been replaced.

If you have waited so long to buy an Xbox One, why would you immediately rush out to buy an Xbox Whatever?

You clearly weren't in a rush to get the latest console then, so you're unlikely to be now.

Maybe to people on forums such as this. Most people cite their reveal and the DRM. Price had a huge factor as well. The power thing is just a bullet point. My other points are the main causes as far as the general consumer goes.

I mean I've heard stories there are still people out there that think the XB1 has DRM still.

The COD:Ghost resolution shitstorm tells me that the reason a lot of people went PS4. Not only was it cheaper it was more powerful.

Announcing the Scorpio is sending the X1 Slim to die, is it not?

You think they expect people to buy a Slim in the meantime, and a Scorpio next year?

Hmmm... this report sounds like Microsoft is really trying to shorten this console cycle. This 2017 console sounds like an entire generation leap rather than a upgrade... and if they do just that then the PS5 will definitely come out with another power leap.

Previously i said the console wars are over if they go with 3 year upgrade cycles.... now I say they just accelerated them... leading to the inevitable which is Microsoft and Sony allow other hardware manufacturers to utilize their PSN / Xbox services to have gaming on set top boxes.

Playstation Now was just the beginning.

This would be about a generational leap between consoles. But 3rd parties could still support both as we saw with games like Far Cry 4, Watch Dogs, and Destiny at the start of this generation. You would just see some gigantic gaps visually. It would be close to this sort of jump

I smell a trade in program for Xbox One owners towards Scorpio.

It would make MS look "good".

Slim for a market that wants something on the cheap (your average consumer), and Scorpio for the "enthusiasts".

Sure but Price has to be the number one factor for most early on along with MS messes up .
Then power , brand games etc etc in any order was also a factor .

They'll probably just mention the Scorpio at E3 and show a realtime Halo 5 or other game teaser with incredible breathtaking visuals, and then not talk about the system until E3 2017.

It'll just be a small mention to show people that yes this exists.

If the specs are true, then it would look like MS wants to position the machine as the VR console machine.

With the whole Windows ecosystem stuff going on perhaps both Rift and Vive will be able to be used with Scorpio and thus immediately be the better option than Sony with PSVR.

If the slim is still supported with first party ports, it absolutely could be sold as the cheap option to play Xbox games.

Get a price range around $199-$250 and I have no doubt it will sell this holiday.

Spancer comes to stage.

-Here is XBO Slim.
-I'll buy it.
-Next year a more powerful XBO.
-Ok, I'll wait.
-All our software is coming to Windows.
-Ok... now I'm really confused.

Well, during the xbox one reveal, they said (this is rocket science guys) about the architecture and power of the xbox one.

So i dont know if they will actually make this one as powerful as this article makes it

Oh boy, all these leaks. It seemed MS had avoided any big leaks so far until now. Of course now the question remains.... what is true and what is bullshit? I hope it's true that they will reveal it soon. Soon should mean E3. Kind of odd though to announce a slim AND brand new improved Xbox at the same show.

This whole thing is nuts!

I just wish there was something in Microsoft's catalogue that made me feel like there was something out there waiting to be grabbed, like there's no example of an Xbox exclusive that I knew could be amazing if it just had a bit more power, you know? The thing I'm most looking forward to on Xbox right now is Below and I'm pretty sure by the time that comes out it will be day and date on PC.

And I'm blown away that Rift support is a target, they have to be talking support for the next headset. Something cheaper, paired down (Cable and setup wise) and bundled with touch controllers, I can't imagine a world where someone who doesn't already have a headset will be buying one to play an even smaller selection of VR games on their 2017 Xbox,

I can't parse any of this right now. It all sounds made up.

Maybe it's all for Cyberpunk 2077. That I can get behind. Just come out and say that Microsoft.

Right, but if Sony is releasing a more powerful veersion of the console that's stomping them what else are they going to do? Not fight just because it won't close the gap? MS wanted to win the gen. Once it was apparent that it wouldn't happen they still have a business to run. Fuck catching Sony, they need to stay relevant and try to make money. Having 2 versions of Playstations that are better that the XB1 isn't a good look.

Sure that's true. I don't mean to say they should not do what they can to stay competitive. Its just a reality at this point, that their console ventures are pretty much a dwindling lost cause if Sony doesn't majorly fuck up their end of the bargain. Its been that way for over 20 years at this point if we're being serious.

I guess MS read the tea leaves, that's why they are unifying their ecosystems to try and take a bite of the PC market and continue the fight on console games as well.

But as an ecosystem, MS has never tailored Xbox to the type of userbase it would have needed to be #1. I think they tried a bit at the early points of 360, but largely fell flat because they were not nuanced about it(in addition to it probably being too little too late)

And now with iterative cycles on the table, power means less than it ever did, because these boxes will be launching with much higher frequency and much less differences to them.

PS4K comes out the strongest, people cheer, XB2 comes out the strongest several months later, people cheer, PS4K2 comes out stronger than XB2 ect

Why would anyone buy an x1 between now and release of this new thing? This makes their slim doa.
I don't know why people keep saying this. If they get the Xbox One slim down to 199 this black friday it will bring in an entire new audience. The same people that want to pay 199 are a completely different audience then those who will be interested in a powerful 500 dollar console a year later. It will be the cheapest place to play all the big holiday games like CoD:IW, Titanfall 2 and Battlefied 1 since there will be no 360/PS3 versions of those games. Having said that, it will be up to Microsoft to get to that price this holiday if they really want to compete this year.

It's really fun to read GAF today.

How suddenly the power doesn't matter anymore. Who cares about 1080p vs 900p? We don't buy consoles for their power, we buy them for their beautiful shape.

Even if this rumor proves false, it already brought some glorious reactions.

The power difference was absolutely the reason I bought my ps4 first and it's been my main console when the 360 was my primary last gen.

Power difference absolutely had an effect on sales.

Remember though that the 360 wasn't even the most powerful, it was just first out of the gate. Arguably the PS3 with its cell processor was stronger, just more difficult to develop for.

And thr Xbox was more powerful than the PS2, but look what prevaled that generation. People did not flock from the PS2 to the Xbox. So power is not the only option, but it might have been a factor in your personal decision.

The real test will be the PS4 and if it can hold its customer base despite a looming Xbox 1.5 on the horizon. Perhaps Sony sees the move to iterative releases as a cost-effective way to stay current and fend off major console versions.

I am going full PC gaming now. This shit is getting stupid.

Pretty much my thoughts on this as well. I bought in on a PS4 just about a year ago and it was mainly for Bloodborne. While its a great game, I think I'm done buying consoles for their exclusives. It feels more of a waste of money each Gen.
