Polygon: Xbox Scorpio will be a ~6 TFLOP system (v PS4K's 4.14), unveil soon, Fall 17

This does go in line with what Phil Spencer said not so long ago about how he didn't like Xbox 1.5 and that if they were gonna move forward, it would be in bug numbers. This certainly would be that. And really... If you're not going to move forward in big numbers, why even bother at all?

Polygon posted some new details:

There will be also a Neo2.0 out next year. Though I expected it to just replace the Blu-Ray drive with a 4k capable drive (some brain dead decision to design a 4k system without 4k BluRay capability) and keep the specs otherwise the same as the Neo, I wouldn't be surprised if Sony also upgrades the spec.

I fully expect Sony to do yearly refreshes from now on (well until the numbers are in).

For Microsoft this is a brilliant play. They have no intention to do yearly refreshes, they want to get out of the hw business and make the Xbox brand the gaming brand on PCs. But by jumping in they force Sony's hand and when the market crashes (i.e. most gamers have jumped ship to PCs) they have an exit strategy, whereas Sony's exit strategy is unknown (well, they sell it off like their other failing businesses, some chinese company might give them a couple of dollars for it).

My main question here, is that it seems this isn't some sort of "stop gap" solution like Sony seems to be thinking the Neo is. This is pretty damn close to a full console transition in terms of power.

So I take it MS is fully done with "generations" at this point. I realize the polygon also states this but its interesting to see as I feel like Sony will still have a PS5 and that Neo is just a halfway point to extend the life of the PS4.

It seems MS is full on out the door on generations as we normally see them at this point if 6TF does indeed hold true.

Not really. The PS1 was a generic MIPS. The PS2 was a proprietary MIPS with a custom architecture. The PS3 was a weak PPC chip with a massive proprietary floating point co-processor array. The PS4 is a generic PC. It looks like everything from now on is just a more powerful PC. It's just branding and marketing.

the lack of a 4k bluray drive in the PS4 Neo isn't confirmed or anything. all we know is that dev kits don't have them, which makes sense because games won't use it and the drive is expensive so don't include it in devkits

So would this be Xbox 2? Or whatever they officially name it? I thought Phil Spencer said no to the idea of a 1.5? I read the first page and page 22. I also saw his tweet or whatever

Well, I'm one of those "exit"-theorists, but this sounds more like a Bond-villain plan to be honest ;P

I hope we still have full gens in the midst of this incremental upgrade nonsense, but I doubt it. Might be successful to an extent, but the majority of gamers won't buy a new box that's only 2-5x as powerful every 2-3 years. We're all big gamers here (or at least like to talk about games), but a console isn't remotely like a phone, yet it's being treated as such... If customers aren't interested, Sony and MS will stop.

I had an Xbox 360, but the only reason I'd have to get a Xbox now were the exclusives, all of which will be on PC now, so that's gone I guess if Rare makes anything I want. That's the big thing here for me, and I don't even really game on PC.

The technology is there, but would cost a lot. People are just counting the GPU price, while that itself is a too much. But when you want to shrink all that down to a small box, you need Surface type engineering. and THAT would cost lot of R&D. and all that just makes it impossible to have in a year.

AMD would have to be giving it away for margins they can't afford.

Wonder if this beast is getting the AMD Vega and HBM2 memory? Would be licking my lips.

Only if Scorpio is a radical strategy, an all-in-one Windows box for the living room, with a price tag far above $500.

Might as well hope for an SSD as well.

I hope you're not basing your assumption of a lack of 4k capable blu ray drive in the neo on the leaked DEV KIT information. Why would a dev kit need 4k blu ray support? Lol

IF Microsoft is releasing this Scorpio Xbox , IF it's 6 TF performance, how would Microsoft handle the same situation? Would they act like Sony, making games be the same across the two console, then being forced to stick with DDR3 and ESRAM, or would they make it a separate console? I wonder, would the current RAM set-up cripple that beefy gpu??

So basically you made a statement, then accuse a specific individual of disingenuous behavior and then when asked to provide evidence of such behavior you are not delivering.

Based on the available evidence in the post I quoted you are displaying undesirable behavior.

Mmm, ignore me? Or are you his lawyer? Your honor, I've been asked a simple question and I answered with my honest understanding of all those words. I'm not an expert, so of course my interpretation could be also wrong. See you in court I guess?

If you have ever been brave enough to enter any DF thread you would know that power doesn't matter and the only way you can tell the difference between 900p and 1080p is if screens are labelled as such. This gen has taught me that controller and ui updates are the most important things to consider. Something MS already has a lock on.

I don't think brave is the right word. I've been sometime foolish, sometimes wise (hopefully more of that lately) but none of that was linked to Xbone in any way.

It will be like PC gaming in a sense with the various different configurations. Make the engine scaleable to the different consoles.

It will be like PC gaming in a sense that at this point I should just buy a gaming PC. I was going to wait until the new year, but I'm thinking about throwing something together now with all these upgrade talks.

I get why MS would want to try and have most powerful box: but how expensive s it gonna be and how big/hot?

If it's too expensive that'll negate the lure of being more powerful and limit it to smaller enthusiast market.

This goes for Sony too of course. Real curious to see how this plays out. Might be time to fully revert to PC for a while until dust settles and the market take on this move is clear.
It shouldn't be that bad. If the reported Neo specs are true, then the APU in the Neo will likely be smaller than the APU in the current PS4. Combined with the reduced cost and increased capacity of GDDR5 chips since PS4 launch the Neo will likely cost less to manufacture and run cooler. Now, if you combine that with the fact that the XBO already uses a larger APU than the PS4 it isn't hard to imagine MS building a ~6TF console that costs about the same to manufacture as the XBO. The main difference is that Sony will likely be making a profit on each Neo sold at $400 while MS will be taking a loss on each XB2 sold. A loss that probably won't be that much more than the loss they took per each XBO, and a loss they would be willing to take in order to bring people back into their ecosystem.

Now we're talking about the kind of specs I originally wanted for this gen.

Sucks for people who got an XBO (me included) but this situation of consoles barely keeping up with the PC (Uncharted 4 is a tech marvel and unfortunately the exception) needs to end as soon as possible. Don't mind tradition. Change things up, especially if you screwed up as badly as MS did with the XBO. I'm all for it.

Maybe next time don't make shit up and accuse people of stuff they aren't doing to push your persecution complex.

Should be interesting to watch all of the die hard Sony guys flip flop from "sales and power 4 life! hahaha" to "you xbots talking sales and power. I'm playing games. Can your Xbox run Uncharted 4" So many fucking frauds lmao

Buh, buh... what about mah flops?

drunk-flip-flop-o.gif

Lmao, dude straight stumbled out of his flops.

Reading this thread I've realized that the general mood towards Xbox hasn't changed much in the last 3 years or so. Cloud jokes, 30 percent jokes, VCR jokes. Well those are actually funny because they seem like the drunk guy at the bar that still tells the story about the time he "totally owned this guy at Homecoming". But even that stuff aside it's just a generally down and "they'll fuck it up" mood. I've been paying more attention attention to the PC (and VR in particular) but it's interesting to see how far their public perception has fallen with the hardcore. I wonder if they can even claw any of that back now? They obviously don't have much sway with the PC crowd.

Lol, and then you have Icy on the other side. Chill fam.

I don't like seeing accusations of other people of being disingenuous and then not backing their weak ass shit up.

You didn't back your weak ass shit up with anything so in the eye of the tiger law you're guilty.

I've stated this before. MS' play is attacking both Steam and Sony at the same time. Damnit, this E3 people gonna be lookin more at hardware than software and here I am looking for what the fuck ReCore is. LOL

Instead of one beating they will go for 2 at the same time.

Serious question. How far set in stone are Sony? Could they just hold off Neo for this Christmas and release something in the 6 teraflop range around the same time as Scorpio?

I always felt Neo was rushing it a bit.
