Polygon: Xbox Scorpio will be a ~6 TFLOP system (v PS4K's 4.14), unveil soon, Fall 17

I don't particularly like these iterative designs.

Also a 4-5x leap in performance 4 years later is hardly impressive, only if compared to the rumours of Neo's relative leap being pathetic.

MS and Sony suck if you want powerful consoles. This thing better launch $400 or less and even then, ehhhhh.

Star Citizen on at least one of the new consoles, come to me!

Plz, Chris ?

In 2020 we will have PS5 and Xbox3 though...just sayin...

I'm really curious how the industry will deal with the upcoming console power struggle. We've been hearing for a long time how the increasing requirements to make a game in the AAA space are straining and there's a lot of stuff going to be added to the mix very quickly. I mean these new systems are all going to be extra work for the devs surely.

Devs would be better off simply continuing with the baseline they have right now, or simply choose on a case basis what kind of standards they want to push with their game.. With this strategy there is no real way to take full advantage of the platforms coming with increasing frequency anyway in any uniform manner

Man, i was not in the mood to upgrade to a new console. Overwatch just came out, Uncharted just came out, Titanfall 2 and new Gears are coming out... this gen is finally getting going.

This is dumb.

I just realized there's going to be a new tier of fanboy that the console generation has never experienced before: Hardware Elitism within the same brand.

You thought Sony vs. Microsoft was annoying? Wait until it's Sony vs. Sony vs Microsoft vs Microsoft.

Enjooooooooooooooooooy.

You gotta throw PC into that mess too. Once we get consoles that can run games at high settings all gloves are off.

Bethesda is making mods on consoles mainstream, so imagine how much of a mess Elder Scrolls VI is going to be on Neo/Scorpio.

Considering what numbers Microsoft threw around with the launch of the Xbox One and "the power of the cloud," I'll wait until this is actually released before getting excited.

And many more games for your consoles are coming. What's dumb, exactly?

From Arthur
our scorpio story was multi-sourced, reporting for about five weeks (before i left for istanbul). all numbers provided by source.
i was skeptical of 6TF for scorpio when i heard it, but again, multiple confirmations. @crecenteb and @chrisgrant wouldn't run otherwise.
and hey, the 6TF number could change, just like the neo's 4.14 number could change. nothing is locked down until ship.
neither of those things change the fact that as of now, microsoft and sony are both announcing new hardware for you to buy at e3.
Where did you see that?
He tweeted it. Also said he heard from 1 source and that is why he didn't put it in the article.

This feels very much like a controlled leak in my view - MS trying to hoover up some of the Neo hype. It'll be interesting to see if there are any hard numbers at E3.

TFlops are the new "x number" bit?

On consoles, in a way, yes. But FLOPS be it gigaflops, teraflops, or petaflops has always been the measuring stick to which theoretical computational performance of a GPU, CPU, or in this case an entire system, is measured. This is at least true in modern day computing.

Jason Schreier also said he heard that 5-6TF is the target. That's about as credible of a 2nd source as there is in the industry.

That may be the target but the realities of cost, power and heat may alter that target.

Current GPUs that are in the 6tf range are $500-600 and much larger power requirements than any console.

Nah, it's because of market reasons, technology reasons, and managing risks. I mean these consoles were not designed for 4K(1440P and 1080P with good anti-aliasing being more realistic rendering resolutions) or optimal VR. To truly allow for the best experiences and support up to 4K games, revisions are necessary.

But most people don't even have 4k sets. That is like catering to the niche crowd right now.

Anyway, a few months ago I thought something like this might be a good idea. But the more I thought about it, the more that I realized that I just prefer a normal console cycle with the focus being on software after I had already bought the hardware.

I know I am still getting the same games and all that jazz, but I can already see how the systems that I already bought not even two years ago will get left in the dust after a year or so. They are already going to be old news and that is not what I want for the money I dropped on these systems.

The way every single major gaming outlet blew the lid on this story today, definitely is controlled.

I think this will be the case as well. Only first party games will fully utilize hardware while third parties focus on the lowest common denominator and work up a bit for higher settings.

I fully expect the majority of games to be targeting normal PS4 and XBO as the baseline for probably the next 2ish years.

wow, this could be a shock for Sony, they should be prepared.

If these rumors are true, Microsoft is the one totally unprepared again.
They would be giving Sony a blank check for full market domination until late 2017.
If they announce this ''soon'' as the rumor suggests they're going to kill the Xbox One for good, including the Slim SKU they're working on (indeed I don't think they're so dumb and they won't talk about anything more than the Xbox Slim in the short term).
Then they come up with what?
A box that while more powerful (coming out a year later, far from a shock), will definetly cost much more, won't have big exclusives because even Microsoft will be publishing all their games on PC as well going forward and at the same time third parties will simply publish the same games on multiple platforms with different graphical settings.
There's a dissonance between wanting to start a new gen earlier but then realizing that the iterative business model won't allow for a clean start again anymore.
There is no one willing to support a single box anymore, not even the platform holder in Microsoft's case :P
There are ecosystems, people who have invested money in them and become more and more tied to them.
And then there are boxes whose power will be irrelevant in long run, because you know that something better is always behind the corner, if you take the hardware crown it's only going to last until the other company comes out with their next refresh when they see fit.
These are also some of the reasons why personally I'm not a fan of this new business model that is upon us, consoles are bound to lose a good chunk of their identity and appeal to become access boxes to ecosystems.

If these rumors are true, Microsoft is the one totally unprepared again.
They would be giving Sony a free check for full market domination until late 2017.

Sony already has full market domination. Microsoft releasing a stronger console this year wouldn't move the needle much.

It would be in their best interest right now to wait it out and release a better console than Neo next year.

I think this is one of the big reasons behind why it's coming Fall 2017. MS is working hard to figure out how to emulate ESRAM for full BC.

Lets not forget, it needs to work the other way around to. The new games need to work both on the 'ESRAM-less' console as the XboxOne.

Speaking of that, the One has 1,4TF and this 6TF? If you want to play this game on the One you first need to download this 640x480 texturepack so we hit 30fps?

Where are all the "I'm done with console gaming" and the assortment of other concern posts now that microsoft is pretty much confirmed to have an iterative console in the works?

Listened to the ign vlog:
- credit to kotaku who heard from multiple sources
- 6tf refers to gpu
- big deal with oculus in works
- 2017 for new xbox, slim this year
- 3 year or so h/w iterations

How would it be in their best interest? They announce their console now and they crater sales of the Xbox 1 until next fall.

Meanwhile Sony gains marketshare and profit when the unified model of PS4 and Neo. While MS banks on people all of sudden switching to their box while Sony firmly has people planted in their ecosystem by the time this releases.

I'll admit MS really has nothing to lose. The PS4 is going to continue to sell well regardless. It just announcing right now tanks their current sales and PS4 is in an even more dominant position next fall.

They refered to the Kotaku and Polygon articles or did they have their own sources?

You don't think a company like MS would want to control every aspect of the messaging regarding a product line announcement such as this?

you don't think a company like MS intentionally leaks things to get a feel for what the reception would be before actually announcing something?

3 years or so? Well, this is going to be 4 years, which is still too early, but better than every 2-3. In 2018, I might start thinking about it if I don't build a PC first. Or just bow out altogether.

There are still some in here.

I think that sentiment was alive and well in March when Phil first mentioned they would go down this route. Then with the Neo rumor/leak shortly after, where it got A LOT more discussion, a lot more people have gone from denial and anger to leaning towards acceptance.

Because further E3 rumors point to Microsoft caring more about Xbox as a platform than they do about the sales performance of a single console, as they're going to introduce more Xbox-like products to strengthen their ecosystem.
