Jaco and Monaka were both created recently and are used well despite not being stupid strong. Goten and Trunks are hanger-ons from the old days.
Super gets away with it for me, purely because it's more of a comedy. It's harder to make the weaker fighters relevant more than the silly characters really. Like it's easy to make Jaco and Monaka part of a story but not really Tien at this point y'know? I guess we will have to see how super develops in the trunks arc.

To have a chance at being relevant in Dragon Ball Super, you must fit one of these three criteria. Antagonists don't count for obvious reasons, they oppose the protagonists, they're going to be focused on for that reason alone.
1) Be strong [really strong]
2) Be a comedic focused character [Jaco, Monika]
3) Be Bulma

Pretty much and characters that get a lot of focus like Beerus and Whis just happen to be a mix of 1 and 2. It will be interesting to see if the next arc is anymore serious in tone.

Can't wait for Bra then. She'd presumably be strong because of her blood, and presumably comedic due to being a female DB character, and she'd genetically be part Bulma.

I'm so glad that Bulma remains relevant. She's in my top 3 characters (the others being Goku and Mr. Satan).
I enjoyed the last two episodes...kind of a decent little side story in between main attractions. The Gryll character looked straight outta GT to me for some reason.
You're right, but I think Copy-Vegeta was also holding back. I just expected SSJ3 Gotenks to do much better lol, but he was completely ineffectual. Gotenks has always been a joke character, but it's not funny when he has no bite at all. It's just sad
Bulma staying relevant around all these chi-powered freaks has always been enertaining. Bulma stay relevant.
This so much I get disappointed when I see that the human characters, piccolo, and 18 won't be relevant anymore.
I agree with this.
I love the show and while I don't think these episodes have been great, I do think they will viewed better as part of the whole show as a neat little side story, people are naturally just wanting the next 'main' arc at the moment. This thread seemed much more positive about the monaka costume and pan episode.

Super hasn't had the time yet to grow, the first 27 episodes were just retellings of stories written for a much shorter medium and we've only had one original arc written by Toriyama for the series so far and it was a tournament that seems like the main point was just to expand the universe for future material. This 3 episode filler arc seems to be agitating people pretty badly, but it's so easy to tell that this is all Toei and ultimately means nothing, it's badly written and feels very cookie cutter, but it really isn't supposed to be anything of note, it's just filling some time while they work on the next arc. I imagine part of the reason it is the way it is was so they could spend as little time on it as possible to focus on the new stuff, so no intricate plot or new villain, just throw in a copy of Vegeta and have some fights. I think people should just chill and wait for the Trunks arc, which will be the first Toriyama written arc for the show that has an actual villain and isn't a story constrained by something like a tournament.
I think it's mainly just people upset that we're getting something like these when the previous stuff was actually pretty good and people would rather the Trunks arc start or some more quality slice of life stuff instead of these 3 episodes of GT. I think people will likely calm down after we see the new information in Weekly Jump later this week and then again after we see the NEP at the end of episode 46.
I don't mind the imbalance in dragon ball super amongst the cast because character wise, the power that everybody has makes complete sense.
- Goku, Vegeta, Tien and Piccolo are the training freaks, the latter 2 know that they will never reach the saiyains yet they keep training because they always want to be stronger. They both got a decent spotlight on Return of F.
- Gohan and Krillin became family mens, heck, even in Z Gohan never was interested in fighting, but he always had to step up his game because Goku was absent, I hope that his training with Piccolo leads to somewhere but it seems that it was completely forgotten.
- Goten and Trunks for the most part had grow up on times of peace, so they don't feel like training because they don't need too.
Besides, this has always been the case with dragon ball, they always make the co-protagonists take a step back for the new flavor of the month, almost all the characters that go to Bulma's parties at some point or another where important for a moment, and later made completely irrelevant, isn't a problem that only super has.
And this fillers are just fillers, these are ok episodes to watch "live" while you wait for the important arcs, and if others characters beated the villians on those fillers people will criticize that they were worthless villians since "X could defeat him"

Yeah I think that Toriyama spoiling Trunks' return is overall a negative.

Just saw an image of jelly Vegeta and as expected it looks horrendous. I'm quite sure Vegeta will just get a straw and drink the Vimto flavoured dude anyway, silly straw for that comedic effect because supers all about the childish jokes and laughs. When Toriyama shits on future Trunks, I'm not quite sure what will happen. Hopefully acceptance that super has been nothing but a mistake, bigger mistake than that men as dogs thread which has killed me inside a fair bit.
Maybe if he lost to a SSB version, I'd be somewhat ok with it. But he got ass kicked by a base Vegeta clone.
Super should just completely ignore all the past supporting characters if they're going to be treating the rest of the cast like that. The only one who wasn't done dirty was Piccolo and he ended up having the best fight in the entire series so far, but it was cut short to give Vegeta even more screen time. Nobody wants to see Vegeta, all of his fights were shit so far. The only enjoyable one was when he got ass beat by Hit.
Now Trunks is going to show up, and the odds are he's going to be humiliated just like how Gohan and Gotenks were just for Goku to save the day again.
All of you expecting trunks to do ANYTHING relevant in the next arc will be dissapointed. Maybe, maaaybe he'll get ssb AFTER goku black is killed by goku. But no way he'll be any stronger than peak ss2 for most of the arc. Super, and I guess dragon ball z has always been weird with power levels though. So maybe ss2 trunks is base goku strong. Who knows. Either way, he'll be sidelined most of the arc.

Vegeta's base form now is way stronger than SSJ3 Goku was before all the God stuff, he is above Gotenks in all forms. You need to chill dude, this is just a dumb filler arc to buy time for the next arc.
Also Vegeta is a massively popular character and no, his fights weren't shit and lots of people enjoyed them.
It's called the "Future Trunks arc" I doubt he's going to be worthless. Toriyama is bringing back Trunks because he is a fan favorite character and he already said he hopes people are happy with it, he's not just going to reintroduce him to have him do nothing.

You sound very upset over Gotenks getting beaten by a character that's stronger than him in a filler episode and somehow seem to think this means Future Trunks is only going to be reintroduced to be humiliated.
I can see trunks having a lot of screen time. And I can also see him training with goku before he goes back to his time after goku black is dealt with. But he won't get any wins. And he won't be that strong when he's introduced.

I think they did it at the correct point. The reactions to this arc would be much more negative if people thought that it was actually relevant and indicative of the future of the series. Revealing the Trunks' arc early gave something to look forward to.

It's possible Goku Black isn't even the actual antagonist. Maybe the true antagonist is being kept a secret until later in the arc.

It shouldn't be fine because it happens too often. There's getting special treatment because you're the main character and getting the main fight every single time in the franchise outside of Cell.

O I agree but I mean I can't think of too many shonens where the Mc doesn't get main fight. It happens but its a rare thing. Which is why if he's gonna hog that final spotlight, the other characters need to shine the rest of the arc. And since people wanna bring up o god ki well alright

Personally I hope Toriyama can recapture the magic of the final Buu fight, I thought that was some of his best writing, having Mr Satan being a major part without actually fighting, Goku and Vegeta teaming up, Buu fighting himself etc. His description did sound like he has something more interesting than just Goku vs black goku planned

There is a difference between criticism and complaining, he was complaining because Gotenks lost to someone stronger than him, even saying Gotenks is shit because losing to Vegeta makes you shit. He's even on about how somehow Gotenks losing to someone stronger than him, in a filler episode no less, means that Future Trunks will be handled poorly.
And then to top it off he decided to say nobody wants to see Vegeta fight and all his fights are shit, just because he didn't like them.
99% of his posts in this thread are just him saying he doesn't like Super or that GT is better, he isn't someone who has given actual criticism, he just says things are shit because he doesn't like them.
I don't like this filler arc either, but what happens here doesn't mean anything about how future stuff will be handled and Gotenks losing to someone who is stronger than him doesn't make him shit. His post seems driven mainly by the fact that he hates Vegeta and is upset that Gotenks lost to a copy of him.
Goku is the main character, the main character gets the final fight most of the time, welcome to action based fiction. As long as other characters are utilized well it's fine.
All I know is they better not make Ftrunks look like an asshat or DBS is DONE.

I'm pretty sure one of the early announcements directly mentions that Trunks barely escapes from his future. So, yes, something like that likely will happen. If that is supposed to have any impact though, he has to be a SSJ Blue already by that point, otherwise they won't really be hyping the new villain much.

"He barely escapes with his life" is what was said, but for all we know the episode could open with him showing up in the past and then telling people that shit went down instead of actually showing it.
It's not like Future Trunks has some rich track record of awesomeness anyway. His introduction was amazing, yeah but after that he gets his ass kicked by 17 and 18, spends most of the arc angsting about his asshole dad, unlocks a power up that's useless, spends the Cell Games sidelined like the other dipshits and then gets killed from an offscreen beam for like no reason.
I'm glad Bulma is relevant. She's very central to Dragonball and has been a main character for virtually the entire run.
- Status
