No it doesn't, the villain just needs to be hiding his true power or they copy Cell and the villain powers up during the saga.

Trunks is great because he's not an idiot. Sure he's not some op character, but when ever he's stronger then his opponent he doesn't mess around. He killed the androids right away when he returned so that cell couldn't absorb them. Then he lured out cell and killed him. Plus he has the best introduction.
Vegeta, Gotenks, Gohan, and Goku on the other hand do some of the stupidest shit.

He killed Future 17,18,and Cell. He got to leave on a high note.
The only time that Trunks looked cool was when he destroyed Frieza and the androids in the future.
Ignore that, and we had a character who
- Has to time travel in order to had any kind of hope to save his future.
- Has big daddy issues.
- Thiks that he has mastered the art of being a super saiyajin by geting too bulky and get rekt by cell.
- Die instantly against Cell.
And I'm a big fan of future trunks and I find him super cool, but if he does nothing against the new villain I will think that is the most normal thing in the world

This has been going on since the very start. Yamcha was weak compared to goku after introducing krillin. Tien made Krillin weak. Piccolo made roshi and tien look weak. The new characters get more shine.
The new characters accompanying goku in super are whis and beerus.
Goku is the main character.
Having a main character doesn't mean the rest of the main cast needs to be irrelevant though. We'll see what happens with this new arc.

Interesting that they showed three galaxies when describing the universe, as it seems to casually fluctuate from one galaxy, to three, to a few, to many. Friezas ships tracker seemed to show many galaxies for example.
That there's at least three again makes me wonder why we never explored a second one before jumping to a multiverse.
Also, sup with the whole, why didn't purple guy absorb my son. Because he's like you. Oh, right, because I wouldn't want to get stronger that way.
Also...Because he's your son? But maybe he was just Vegeta-ing his real feelings.
Why did the second purple guy never absorb someones power himself, rather than just telling Vegeta purple guy to do so?
Anyways, this arc feels like a quick and dirty way for the show writers to go
-Vegeta stronk because he beat SS3 Gotenks
-Goku stronkest because he beat Vegeta equivalent in a easy narrative way around Vegeta turning bad again
It's...Acceptable, but just that. not sure why people expected Gotenks to do anything major though, ever since SSB Goku and Vegeta are hilariously above any previous arcs characters.
Since the superhuman water key is shaped like a soother, I wonder if they're going to give it to Pan for protection.

The problem was that Freeza wasn't just established as the strongest in the galaxy, but the strongest in the universe. So, all galaxies have the same ceiling, doesn't matter how many there are, if they want to stick with that line and create excuses every time it's broken.

Hey... if it wasn't for Trunks, the "Cell Games" wouldn't exist and he would of died right then and there and Cell would of sought Goku out. Game over. Wouldn't be too difficult being someone of his 'perfect' abilities. He also went back to his time and cleaned house.
I'm not saying Trunks didn't contribute anything, I'm just saying that if he spends the majority of this upcoming arc on the sides or getting his ass whooped then that's not all that different than his depiction in Z. I don't want that to happen, though.
My hope is Trunks returns with SSB so he can fight evenly with Goku and Vegeta. Or that this next arc actually has minion enemies so everyone can have something to do.

I hope Trunks has SSB in order to have a hyped enemy from the start. It'd be clear that he'd be above that level in order to make him run away, so, Goku and Vegeta as they are wouldn't be enough. I don't want something like the Universe 6 tournament where someone on the level of Goku and Vegeta only appears near the ending, but a new arc that starts running, like the Saiyan and Cell Sagas or even the Battle of Gods movie (Beerus was much more friendly than the standard antagonists, but also way above anything the heroes had in the beginning).

The story is very clearly not Toriyama and the same goes with the designs. This is a filler arc created by Toei to buy time for the Trunks arc.

I thought the manga was promotional material and the anime was what we should be paying attention to, at least that was the debate a while back when the anime did something differently or said something differently I can't remember. Now its filler cuz toriyama didn't outline it? So is there filler or not

When he went SSJ3 against Buu he was fairly useful. Roughly on par with Buu and was upset Gotenks lost his mothers.
Gotenks doesn't have to be a complete joke. He could have been much more useful in the RoF saga than just getting a cheap shot.
As Goten and Trunks get older (roughly 5-6 years now), they and Gotenks should be a bit wiser.
Someone so powerful doesn't need to be such a complete waste.
Trunks could have killed Semi-perfect cell easily. But he didn't.

There was a recent interview that changed some people's view on the manga, since it was confirmed that the author received Toriyama's material, like the anime crew, rather than making the manga based on the anime material, and it was said that Toriyama receives every page of the manga before publication. It was also mentioned that the anime staff had started to use some of the manga's storyboards as reference material, which seemed an odd comment at the time, since the manga looked completely different from the anime, but the newest chapter seemed to have pages sharing composition with anime shots.
Anyway, in addition to all that, the current anime mini-arc's new characters have had no Toriyama lineart published, which seems fairly odd considering how previously we had been always getting Toriyama art for the new characters and we even already have two Toriyama designs for Trunks from the next arc (alongside a message talking about it which said nothing about these current episodes).
Vegeta got in his way. Or at least I remember that happening.

On top of what Neon said we were also told that the anime staff adds and expands things. There is a 99% chance this 3 episode arc was something Toei thought up real quick to buy some time for the production of the next arc.

Whatever Toei decide to create on their own IS canon.
We haven't seen any abilities from the new characters in the manga while the anime showcased plenty ( including God Goku and Beerus ).
The anime staff expands because Toriyama is lazy. It's THEIR show.
They ask for Toriyama's guidance so that it doesn't get off track like GT.
Any "filler" they create is submitted to Toriyama, that approves or vetoes.
That was the case in Z, in video games, and for super.
Just don't forget that Toriyama is forgetful and lazy when it comes to keeping track of story details.

They sell it as a book now. It's already a total disgrace and insult they sold the first book with all the jumps. But a second ?
