I wonder if Goku Black is a rogue God of Destruction gone mad with power or some shit? Like he beats his Whis equivalent and sets off through multiple timelines/universes wiping out races and planets?
I'm pulling stuff straight out of my ass but, honestly, it's nice to have a proper villain and "hopeless" arc coming up. Makes for much more entertaining speculation.

There is nothing that makes it "not make sense" so far, the only real question is what's up with Mai and I think people should just wait till we actually have some PLOT to make a judgment on that.
How does it not make sense? Future Trunks' timeline is under threat again... he's going back to the "main" timeline to seek help.

Why exactly would the Dragon Balls be necessary for what we know so far? Everyone is just assuming something happened to Goku in the afterlife. There's no reason to assume that Goku would have had to have been alive to become Goku Black.

Hence why they'll have to pull some "serious wtfery", as I stated? There's yet to be any instance of someone escaping the afterlife permanently, unless I'm forgetting something! Goku during the Buu saga lasted less than a day, so what's this Goku doing different? We also have yet to see him with a halo, although that's possibly just because it'd be off-panel in the only art we have.
As for the smugness, there's an undertone (and, in this case, actually explicit OVERtone) of "how could you possible not understand?" to a lot of posts in this thread. Usually not directed at me. I was only the target this time because I'm arguing the devil's advocate side of things, but I see it happen a lot, and yes it rubs me the wrong way.

Yeah, she is. So she's canon... But she's only supposed to be a year younger than Pan. So Bulma needs to be pregnant if she's her daughter.
Still odd as hell since Mai is like...30 years older than Trunks. Maybe the movies are in Future Trunks' timeline. We've seen nothing about Trunks and Mai in the anime.

We don't know anything about Goku Black yet, certainly not enough to say it doesn't make sense. The potara is very obviously focused on in the artwork, for all we know Goku has become a god of some kind. Just wait instead of jumping to conclusions based on nothing.

That wouldn't make any sense, everyone was killed by the androids when Trunks was a baby, the movies take place after Buu. There's probably a reason future Mai is young.

I'm assuming Mai is young because the Pilaf Gang used the Dragon Balls to become young around the time or shortly before Trunks was born and everyone was killed, making Mai physically like... In her 20s? That's my guess.

Yeah, this is my assumption. We never saw the Pilaf gang in DBZ after Future Trunks showed up, so the dates line up. It fits perfectly for a retcon and Toriyama can even go "just as planned".
More specifically that
he's already gone around and brought humans nearly to extinction in the future timeline and Trunks can't do anything to stop him even as a Super Saiyan.

Wouldn't it be possible that Pilaf, Mai and Shu were turned into kids in FTs timeline too? The cyborgs in FTs timeline killed a lot of people, but not everyone (as far as I remember). So shouldn't it be possible that they were turned into kids and survived the cyborgs' wreaking havoc?

Evil man with Goku voice is so weird, though. Turles and Bardock had the voice and they really shouldn't have. I hate how every Son character has the same voice.

It's entirely possible and probable they made the wish before Piccolo or Kami died, but turned into babies hence why the were kids/preteens in the current timeframe.

IIRC, he read through the whole manga for the first time in ages as part of his prep work for Battle of Gods. Given the series' return to having a good amount of comedy, I suppose they seemed like a natural fit.
