Mirror's Edge Catalyst EA Access Trial Now Live

The game seems super blurry on PC too. :S

It runs really well though.

Garrett Hawke posted some downsampled PC screens on the previous page that look pretty stunning so it should be fixable provided you have the hardware for it. I was OK with the graphics on PS4 when I played the beta, but seeing that made me more than a little jealous.

If it makes you feel better (and it should :P) I'm unable to play at that resolution. Maybe when I get a 1070... But until then I'm on 1080p, which honestly isn't even that big of an upgrade over PS4's 900p. Still blurry as hell. :P

Watched some of the Giant Bomb Quick-Look, and while it did look like there's plenty of parkour goodness to be found here, it looked very simplistic.

Do new areas of the open world open up with more complex routes that require more advanced moves? Are more complex routes only available in later areas of the world to account for the need to unlock special moves, or are those possibilities scattered all over the open world? And how far in do you have to play to be able to explore the full map at your leisure?

Last bit, the visuals in the Quick-Look looked very blurry, and with a very aggressive depth of field effect. I'm hoping that this isn't the case on PS4 because it makes everything look rough.

- There's stuff locked trough an move (or gear) that, if you don't have it, you can't access. It's mostly "treasures" stuff, like those glowing yellow blobs that you can collect. The complexity of the game goes up as you get closer and closer to the end. For me those later areas are that much better than the stuff you start playing on.
- There's no specific areas with more complexity in the open world, they're mixed. Like you can't go somewhere until you get the double wall run. In the story you do go trough some more complex areas that you have to execute many different moves by the end.
- Xbox One runs at 720p, PS4 at 900p. But the PS4 version (wich i'm playing) doesn't look good either. It does feel like an early gen game, with muddy textures everywhere and buildings looking like just white boxes with almost no detail. It's a blurry game. I was really expecting more from DICE with the Frostbite.

Well I just got to the point where the rest of the story missions are gated off
when you have to track down what happened to Icarus
but it said my story progression at that point was 52% which is kind of scary because I feel like it was just a few missions.

So far my absolute favorite are the grid nodes because it's a huge climbing puzzle with lasers that kind of reminds me of having to figure your way up to the top of the atrium in the original.

I didn't play the first but I'm loving this trial and placed a preorder.

Enjoyed it a lot more once I napped LB and LT to paddles on the elite controller.

I feel like a large part of why people feel this game is less "clean" than the original visually is because at this point any image of it that you get shown is going to be running with 8xMSAA at 4K or above, down sampled to 1080p.

To show what that can do for this game, I took some down sampled shots, and the game is utterly gorgeous. You can also see how the textures are much improved from the beta.

Good news as well is that you get around 30fps on ultra on a 970 at 4K, so hopefully a 1070 will be enough for 4K 60fps at reduced settings!

Faith in PC version restored! Here's hoping it supports SLI for 4K60 goodness

Those grid nodes are really fun.

I really liked the mission where you climb the anasi tower, that was pretty awesome.

To you who have played the available main missions, do they get longer than the first two or three included in the beta? Does there seem to be as much content between them as there was in the first Mirror's Edge? And are they interesting enough to speedrun over and over?

I wasn't impressed with my first session but I must say after spending another hour playing I'm enjoying it a lot more now.

I have some new moves and tried a couple of side quests and they were decent not sure how quickly I would grow tired of therm or how much I would play them after the main story is complete.

To me the game had become not a day 1 and will not buy, now it's a "will buy when half the price" and I'll probably enjoy it!

Will continue to play the trial.

Don't know why the consensus is this is well optimized. For GPUs, maybe.

AMD FX-6300 (6 core) at 4.4ghz + GTX 970 is stuttering. Ultra, high, and medium all perform the same. Only low is better. Even with a 30fps lock the framerate is almost but not completely stable.

This is the only game I've ever played on this PC that doesn't maintain at minimum a solid 30fps at high / ultra.

EDIT: Moved it to my SSD, and things are definitely better. Could be a specific issue with my computer. Windows 10.

I'm having an absolute blast with the trial. I played the heck out of the first game (beat it on all 3 platforms) and Catalyst is just like it, only bigger. I've three starred several Dashes and beaten most of the missions available in the trial. Moving through the world is really fun. Combat is fun, especially when you unlock the extra damage perks which turns a lot of the enemies into quick kills, putting the focus back on traversal. The gridNodes are great, and I love that they reward doing them without getting caught. I can't wait to get my hands on the full game on Tuesday. Some assorted thoughts:

* The time for 3 stars on Nomad's Run seems faster than it was in the Beta. I can't get it. I'm Top 2% in the world with a 2 star time.

* I feel like even with the increased amount of story missions in the trial, I still can't get a good hold on the story. It really hasn't gotten beyond introducing characters.

* There's time of day! I'm sure DICE has mentioned this, but it didn't seem to be present in the Beta. But I just did a side mission for Nomad from the Beta, but at night.

* For a wonderful, beautiful moment I was 10th in the world for a Dash. But that's gone now. :(

Day One for me. Will pre-order tomorrow. I am infatuated with the graphic design and the running brings back great memories of the original game, which I completed three times. It's the only game I have ever played to completion that many times, besides Resident Evil 4.

Also, glad my 46-year-old eyes don't have any issues with the 720p on Xbox One. Again, I love the art style, but I think the game looks wondrous even on a 75" 1080p set from 10 feet away.

I'm liking this more than the original tbh.

I don't mind the open world change at all, since the actual missions are pretty linear, or at least they have a similar structure to ME1.

The combat's definitely better. It helps a lot that it doesn't have the shitty gunplay of the first game. It's a little janky and awkward at times, but it's definitely an improvement.

The free running is basically the same from Mirror's Edge, so that's a plus.

Story's definitely garbage though, but whatever. I don't really look for amazing storytelling in a Mirror's Edge game.

Happy to start seeing some more positive reception to the trail. Buying this game sends a message to big publishers that less generic or more niche games are still worth developing.

My rig had some serious issues running the game on 8.1. Upgraded to W10 last night and the difference was staggering on my PC. Had 55 avg. FPS on med/high, now I have 65 avg. on high pre-set. Would prefer if the framerate was a bit more stable though.

I'm absolutely loving this, the gameplay is so good.

I have less than two hours left on Origin Access and I'm gunna miss it when it's gone. My only concern is length - I've done like 4 story missions and it says 25% story completion.

Working my way through the full game right now, so I'll post the exact amount of missions when I am done. I'm further than the locked point for EA access, so we'll see soon enough!

I stated my opinion about all story related topics a couple of times and once they fix this issue on the pc, I wil try to live with this.

I spent more time with the game now and I would say it does most of the elements right, which I woud expect from a Mirror's Edge in 2016.

Probably it is a little bit too futuristic, but in the end we have the same amazing artdesign and I saw things, which looked simply stunning.

The open world is absolutely the right thing. You can jump from mission to mission, like in a linear game, but exploring the world or doing some additional time trials is great. And why is it like this? Because the gameplay is what makes this game in its core amazing. Getting into this flow, finding a quick way, simply feels amazing.

Thanks for the impressions, everyone. Curious to see how it reviews tomorrow.

One question: how's the music?
To be honest it hasn't stuck out to me yet. The ambient music when running around is fine and the dash/time trial music is good too. But I would've liked stronger ambient music I think - something more along the lines of AC2/B in volume rather than something like AC:Syndicate.

Got to the point where I couldn't progress any longer, it's actually pretty damn fucking good. The beta turned me off but the story is okay and gameplay is fun, the city looks pretty goddamn amazing, the soundtrack is cool too. I might buy this a lot sooner than I thought I would.

Can anybody tell me what mission EA access ends on? I just finished the main game. As far as I can tell, playing the trial period to story completion ends up being about
40 percent
purely in terms of story length. This is however not including side missions or anything extra.

does it get better or more of the same?

If I remember correctly it ends on a mission called
"Find Icarus"
.

Yeah, so roughly
40 percent
of the story missions are available to you during that period then.

Wonder why they let that amount of the game be playable in a trial. Definitely think they should have limited it to about half that and just opened up more side missions.

One question: how's the music?
I finished the trial and absolutely love the game, but I am super curious how it reviews as well. I don't really care about reviews, but ME is such a unique game that I am curious to see how it is received among reviewers. I am expecting very polarizing reviews. I think it is going to depend greatly on how reviewers go into the game, as it is more a racing game than an action game.

I am so excited for the full game to unlock, so far it is everything I wanted out of a new ME.

In terms of what? Gameplay or story?

Gameplay.

Does the game basically go:

- Accept Mission
- Travel Here
- Climb/Figure out where to go
- Lockdown (Fight)
- Run Away

Until the game ends?

--

I somehow don't think this will review very well, might be between 65 - 70%

Essentially how the entire game goes. There are a few missions that deviate from this structure, but at the end of the day it is mostly going to a certain point, and then running away from KrugerSec.

The final mission is pretty decent in terms of platforming and running, however I feel like many people are going to find the ending itself EXTREMELY disappointing.

So how long would you estimate the main story to be? Is the game Worth buying?

Gamespot review score is up: 7/10 as the first one.

To complete only the main story the game took me about
7 to 7.5 hours.

I would say it is worth it if you want more Mirror's Edge and enjoyed the trial (if you played it). However, if you are looking for a fulfilling story, definitely look elsewhere as I feel that it was a major disappointment. On the content side, there seems to obviously be loads to do, with the side missions and collectibles looking like they will add another sizeable chunk to the game (from what I can tell atleast another 5-10 hours, however it could be more).

Furthermore, there are the community goals and challenges as well as perfecting your times on the levels and extras, both of which adding a great deal of replayability depending how much you obviously care about those things.

Is it worth full price for everybody? Probably not...however there are worse games you could be spending your time and money on. My predictions for the review average is about 70 percent as well, as I do see some people not liking it too much.

One important question, does it have new game plus?? Also, did you max out/unlock every skills by doing side quests + main mission? No cliff hanger ending right?

Considering this is probably the last ME game ever, I hope they were smart enough to give Faith a proper ending.

Bad news according to:

I liked the Mirror's Edge 1 ending scene with the music so this is sad news. I'll try to avoid spoilers. :P

Is the open world actually "big" or is it just an illusion of the map scale-wise?

I would say that it is more than an illusion than anything. It isn't small, but you can definitely get from one end to the other in not very long at all. However, since I relied mostly on the runner assist (can't remember the name of the feature that highlights where to go), I don't really have that great a concept of location. I remember visually the main places (like when I get close to a safe house I can remember the general area), but anything in between those main areas feels very similar.

Because of this, I am unsure of what boundaries I have explored, and what I haven't seen. For all I know, there are whole sections that could be devoted to only side missions...despite the fact that I find this highly unlikely as I am sure the main missions would atleast touch on all of the possible locations.

Sorry for the double post, meant to include these in the last one!

One important question, does it have new game plus?? Also, did you max out/unlock every skills by doing side quests + main mission? No cliff hanger ending right?

Doesn't have new game plus, but you can replay missions at any time. When the game ends, you are dumped back into the world following the final mission. You can't max out all of the skills doing only the main missions, so I still have a couple left to unlock.

As for your ending question (only answering what was asked but I will spoiler tag for the super sensitive),
there is no cliffhanger ending, but it has been left open if they want to continue Faith's story.

Woa what.... no wonder why the Trial was capped at 6 hours

The six hour cap isn't the problem, it is the amount of missions they decided to include in the trial. Most EA access trials as far as I can remember are six hours (correct me if I am wrong), with them giving you that extra time to just mess around if you choose to do so. I believe you can complete the missions they allow you to do in 2-3 hours. My problem with that (despite not playing the trial to begin with), is the fact that they include a large amount of the missions, when they should have cut the number of story missions available probably in half.

Catalyst just got an update on PC! Adds a resolution scale slider, a setting above ultra (Hyper), GPU memory limit switch and more.

Slay DICE!

Turning off GPU limit tanked performance on my 970 but it'll be perfect for the 1070/1080 I assume :)
