Polygon: Xbox Scorpio will be a ~6 TFLOP system (v PS4K's 4.14), unveil soon, Fall 17

Dude I'm flying all the way to fucking LA for Scorpio/Neo... I really really really hope they at least announce it. I'm not expecting a full reveal obviously of Scorpio but I'll be super pissed if there isn't anything.

Edit: I mean there are a few other reasons lol

I'll be pretty disappointed. I'd like some clarity on the specs and release timeframe for both so I can decide whether I want to buy one or the other or both. Info on the new consoles, gameplay and a release date for Titanfall 2, and MP gameplay for Battlefield 1 are the things I'm looking forward to.

I am willing to make a bet that Scorpio doesn't make an appearance. The only thing you will hear is "All Xbox One games will work on all future Xbox systems going forward." or something like that, and that will be all there is to the Scorpio at E3.

I feel like they are going to pimp the Slim, The Xbox Stick and/or the Xbox TV (they may just show the Stick now and the TV at Gamescom or something) and some service updates and games. Scorpio is way to far away to be revealed now, especially with sales that could be effected negatively by an announcement.

Neo, I am not sure yet if they show it now, or closer to when they want to launch it at a different show.

Im trying not to get too excited but if theres no reveal, ill be really bummed.

If neo AND scorpio arent there, im gonna break something.

Xbox fans waiting for that Scorpio unveiling during E3.... only to be disappointed for no show :P

Access the internet like never before via dial-up.

You just made me think of something, instead of "you got mail", why not have Cortana tell you if your friend hop online?

Turn off visual notifications, turn on cortana. "Your friend soandso is now online"

Bad. Ass.

They are!

Dont play with my emotions. How do you know this?!

Well they might make a passing remark about it but they won't divulge stuff like specs etc I don't think.

Tbh I'm not so sure about anything any more. The existence of these upgraded mid gen consoles alone is surprising to me.

I'm just very confident that they are coming out this Fall/Spring. And yeah it's never been done before so it's still going to be a shock for a bit. I'm excited though.

Sometimes I still read the MisterX forums for fun, but since that "Parasite76" fiasco at E3 they don't trust "insiders" anymore. However, there is one guy called Reverseboom who posted something interesting on May 3rd. They don't believe him, but who would make up stuph like this

"I saw two demos running on the new prototype.

The first demo was running in real-time 2160P @ 60FPS with a new AA system developed by the engineering team of 343i, the delivery system better results over the TXAA 2X with free performance over 64MB of SRAM new system.

It has been said that the prototype has dedicated physical processors, particles, audio, upscaling, and a new chip that works in color / HDR in order to improve the final quality of the images.

Textures and shadows in HLSL 6.0 and a new version of TILED RESOURCES are superb.

The second demo was running in real time 2160 @ 60FPS developed by DICE, the latest version of Frostbite. I think it's part of a new RPG, it is absurd. The forest, vegetation, water, textures, lighting and shadows, it seems some video of Graphine, seems reality, it looks like a movie.

The system is still in development and has huge margins for optimizations and improvements until the launch next year. Panos Panay is under the creative control. I saw some of the designs, and all of then is amazing. They are testing new liquid cooling system more efficient in order to have better margins optimizations and increased clock."
Who indeed lolol

Mrx himself
Mrx posing as an inside source
MrCteam
Parasite posting as a new guy
Just about anyone over there that reads or posts on his site

I mean seriously? "I saw two demos" and somehow he knows how it compares to TXAAx2, the exact amount of SRAM, and all about the new Tiled Resources being used? And he felt he should share it with the MrX carnival? Common.

Those exact 'leaks' were used in 2013 on his site. Practically word for word. No real insider would touch his site wit a 10 ft pole at this point.

Ya'll check out Parasite76's twitter.

It's pretty amazing. His "insider" info is that Scorpio is the xbox one and that the xbox one is actually 5+ tflops. that the Neo is in response to the xbox one's power being switched on.

Dude already moved the goals posts(as he has been going for 3+ years) to September lol.

Gotta love em, even if we do get a 6 TF scorpio you know it will have another 6 TF hidden in its power supply.

Of course our russian and eastern block comrades have their pulse on the industry, insiders galore.

I stopped reading after a while, it was funny for a few months. God they are deluded.

Ya I agree. Can't see them giving Sony all the limelite this E3 when they have something coming as well. MS is a prideful company.

If it's spring release, they will reveal and try to blow our socks off.

If it's fall 2017 release, they will mention it at the end like a teaser with no real info or demos, but more of a 'more info coming at gdc 2017!' Or something to that effect.

I can see both of these as a reality, but either way Scorpio is going to be at E3.

I'm willing to make a wager at this point.

If it was holiday 2017, it's reasonable to suggest that it may be able to be brought forward to spring / summer 2017. They would have another 6 months to finalize and test the hardware, then go into production in the beginning of the new year.

If that is the case, announcing it now is going to be no different than any other console launch throughout history. Not really anyway.

"Hold off from the Neo this Christmas and buy our better product in April". etc

Could work.

I'm still favourite for holiday 2017 and some kind of teaser this E3 though.

The thing that always makes me laugh about our Russian/eastern block comrades is that they are staunch America/West haters and heavily pro Putin, yet look all shit he does for an American/Western product lol.

I think you're spot-on.

Remember how he mentioned seemingly off-hand during E3 2015 that they would be bringing more news at Gamescom 2015...?
He'll do the same thing here.

(Just as he said in December 2014 that the year 2015 would 'start the conversation' for PC gaming and Windows 10. Always hinting that there is more news to share...and leaving us wanting just a bit more information.)

Yep. What company doesn't like giving the competition a 20 million console head start lead. All part of the master plan.

That parasite is a troll! Can't wait for this E3 so he and his followers are done for.

No, it won't. Pretty much nothing can stop holidays sales.

But why do a prototype when it is available in all current consoles? also they talk about many chips, not just one. and how would the Xbox one be able to do 2160k at 60fps with a small arm chip to help?
and why are you so sure that, if it exists, Sony or MS will make it available through an api?
I said only the bold text could be supported by Xtensa accelerators. Multiple chips is likely a misunderstanding and 2160K @ 60 FPS is nearly 100% a function of the CPU and GPU not accelerators.

Why am I so certain it exists? Because the same Xtensa accelerator used for HEVC in the XB1 is also used for gesture recognition middle ware, video post processing and OpenVX acceleration in AMD APUs. AMD says they use the same hardware the XB1 uses for HEVC in their UVD for HEVC. I looked at what the Xtensa accelerator blocks could accomplish.

Later generation Xtensa DPUs are more efficient and powerful and I fully expect the NEO and Scorpio to have the more powerful versions off loading more features from the GPU to accelerators.

Speaking of the Mr X cult, one of their regular posters AND an ex MOD signed up here not long back 8) Luvforthagame ...step forward son, come bask in the limelight!

If they did that Xbox One sales would plummet overnight and not recover until Fall 2017. No way they tease a new console.

The leaked docs state that every game has to be patched to take advantage of Neo's enhanced power, nothing will just run faster.

some people are taking this the wrong way, according to the leaked docs:

- in order for old games (anything before september 2016) to take advantage of the better hardware, a patch is required. there is no requirement to actually do this though.

- any game released after september 2016 will require a day 1 patch that includes a "neo mode"

- any game released after october 2016 will require a "neo mode" to pass cert

glorious

MisterX forums is for idiots run by idiots, and you'd do yourself a favour by not dragging that bollocks in here.

Though every PS4 game released as of October of this year will need to support both the original PS4 and the NEO, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the Neo will release in October. Additionally, games released in the late September window will require a day one patch that updates them to NEO standards. The documents we’ve received explicitly note that devs are allowed to launch NEO-ready games before the NEO itself releases.

Games released previous to the NEO can take advantage of this hardware upgrade, but only if developers decide to patch their titles.

I really can't see MS talking about Scorpio.

It'll be indirect. Broad discussion about future Xbox-specific hardware and support for the Xbox platform on PCs. Maybe mention of it starting next year.

I doubt very much that it will be discussed directly.

I dunno, I feel that'll be even worse for Xbox one sales and the lack of information would need addressing as the general would then push it out for all to see, for me it's either tell all and kill sales for however long until launch of say nothing.

Regarding the xbox one release, how many months was it between the announcent and release date?

Xbox One event - May 21, 2013
Xbox One launch - Nov 22, 2013

So like a 6 month-ish gap then?

hmm, maybe a Xmas release then? that would be something huh.

I think this thread has been beaten to death. People are now talking about Mister media x so yeah. We have less than a week till we may/may not hear something.

yep Xmas......2017
I think it depends on HBM2 as Vega is shipping for high end dGPUs late this year or early next year.

SK Hynix is planning to commence production of their HBM2 DRAMs in Q3 2016, as reported by Golem.de. The source reveals that SK Hynix will be initiating full fledged mass production of 4 GB HBM2 DRAMs in Q3 ’16 and followed quickly with 8 GB HBM2 DRAMs in Q4 ’16.

Samsung is already shipping 4hi HBM2 and plans to ship 8GB HBM2 later this year.
I'd guess Scorpio is using one 8 hi for 8GB so memory won't be available till late this year which means spring 2017 to November.

Could they stack two 4s or does HBM not work that way? I've only upgraded ram in a PC once, and that's about the extent of my knowledge.

XBOX 4 sounds great, smells like victory.

'Xbox 4' or just 'Xbox' are the only sane names.

However this is the company that named the last two consoles the 'Xbox 360' and the 'Xbox One' so I'm not expecting sanity, I'm expecting 'Xbox 3000' or 'Xbox 4U' or something else equally incomprehensible.

You can't just stack DRAM willy nilly. You need to connect each one to the interposer, so there are limits to how much you can stack. HBM1 specifications allowed for 2Gb (512MB) dies stacked 4 high, with a bandwidth of 128GB/s. HBM2 specifications allow for 8Gb (1GB) dies stacked 8 high, with a bandwidth of 256GB/s.

The R9 Fury X for example uses 4 HBM1 stacks, each stack being 1GB of DRAM with 128GB/s of bandwidth for a combined total of 4GB of DRAM and 512GB/s of bandwidth.

From what i understand, with HBM you can have max of 2GB per stack. Was it cheaper to do 4 stacks of 1GB than 2 stacks of 2GB? Was the need for 4 stacks the increased bandwidth?

Assuming Scorpio is using HBM2...

I think it needs two stacks to get the 512 gb/s bandwitdh. Can be 8GB or 16GB of ram total.

Without the need for a bus and a less complex mobo, maybe the savings going forward would offset the cost of HBM2.
