Microsoft Surface Pro 4 announced: "better in nearly every way" (The Verge)

Hey Surface-GAF. Just a quick question. So... I'm going to buy a Surface this week.

Here's my question: i5 or i7? I'm looking at an 8gb model either way, I think. Between the two there's a $200 difference.

[...snip...]

I'm leaning i5, but I don't want to make a mistake, so I figured I'd ask GAF.
I've heard enough battery/fan-noise concerns about the i7 that I'd only go for it if I absolutely needed it. I work in game dev, 3D art and 2D art, and I have only really had trouble with anything that requires a fancy GPU. The fan almost never kicks in, sometimes when using Blender or painting on really high res images.

Heads up re: Kerbal though: it doesn't run on my i5 SP4 and I think it has serious GPU problems. I contacted support and they told me they wouldn't support my machine. Sounds like it runs badly and the devs don't care.

My job has the surface 3 and they're pieces of junk. I haven't tried the surface 4 but after dealing with the junk surface 3 is I wouldn't want to.
I may have to check one out to replace my laptop but right now I'm looking at an apple laptop instead.

Why? We have several people using Surface 3 and they love it. What issues are you having?

I don't understand posts like this. They're as useless as they get in threads like this. At least explain why the devices are so terrible, so people can use that write-up to make better purchasing decisions.

Yep. Isn't it right on par with Mac in customer satisfaction? I thought I read that.

Here's my question: i5 or i7? I'm looking at an 8gb model either way, I think. Between the two there's a $200 difference.

My case use is this: I've got a powerhouse gaming PC and a fairly decent (but 2-year-old) Dell laptop. I'm currently lugging this big Dell with me everywhere, and I don't want to, thus moving to a Surface Book. I'll continue to use the Dell around the house a bit when I want to work from a room that isn't my office, but the Surface Book will primarily be for travel.

When I travel, a lot of my work will be low-intensity stuff; I write a lot for a living, so that's not so much of a concern. However on occasion I'll also want to hop into Premiere Pro to do some video editing; we're talking 1080/60 at max (basically, game capture), and short-form - videos shorter than 20 minutes in length. I also might on occasion use the Surface for Capture - plugging in a capture card via USB and capturing to a MicroSD via the Surface. (I work in games, so sometimes this is required at an event or something.) Again, though, this isn't really high-impact stuff as all the high-end capture cards now do all the processing on the card rather than on the machine they're plugged into.

On rare occasion I might play a game on it mid-flight or something, but if I do I'd be keeping it small in scale. I'm not going to be playing Fallout or something on it; we're talking stuff like FTL, Kerbal, or things like the Steam rereleases of FF7-9... so I IMAGINE games won't be a factor, right?

But, with the video editing stuff - is there a boost worth considering from the i7? I understand there's a battery life trade-off too... but bearing in mind the video editing might only come into play once every few months (say, E3 or Gamescom) since I edit on my PC at home the rest of the time, I'm looking for a decent boost to something to justify the purchase.

I'm leaning i5, but I don't want to make a mistake, so I figured I'd ask GAF.

Truth be told, I slightly regret my Core i7 purchase - I would have been just fine with the i5 model and saved the £250. There doesn't appear to really be that much of a difference from a colleagues i5 to my i7.

The gaming speed improvement is nice, but it doesn't really make a game that was unplayable before with my SP2 playable all of a sudden. And at times the device does get warmer that I would like, and the fan kicks off more than it should.

I also kind of regret getting the dGPU in the Surface Book but would happily recommend the device to people without the dGPU.

It's definitely a lot faster for gaming, but not faster enough to justify the extra $200. I've found that I don't play many games on this device at all compared to what I thought I might, and when I do play games on it, it's generally games that would run fine on the integrated GPU.

I imagine the same is true between the i5 and i7 (I have the i5)

Laggy, the keyboard would stop working if you move it just a bit, the stylus sometimes won't work, freeze, crash. Just different bugs about them. Almost everyone in the company hates them. i told them to replace them with the surface 4 but they won't do it because they're expensive.

I want a Pro 4 so bad, but I am salivating over the possible specs of what the Pro 5 will have. I hate to jump in now if the 5 is right around the corner.

I would have thought the 5 is a year away at least, and the SP4 is an amazing product in its own right so just do it! The big difference for me between the SP3 and SP4 is the CPU upgrade - means I can output in 4K just fine, so now this device will likely last my 4-5 years at least before I want to consider a mobile PC replacement. It's weird that I've had it for 6 months already, it truly doesn't feel like it.

The Pro 4 only just released 6 months ago. We're still a while away from the 5. And either way, even if the Pro 5 did release soon, I wouldn't expect any big advances under the hood. Tick-tock is dead, so this years Intel chipset, kabylake, will be nothing more than a minor refinement of last years skylake, which the Pro 4 uses. It won't be until late next year that we're getting canon lake on 10nm drops, so I wouldn't expect to see any major improvements in the 2in1 space until then.

I understand they have slightly different use cases, with surface pro 4 being a tablet that can act as a laptop, and surface book being a laptop that can act as a tablet. But I can't get over the feeling that they are almost two halves of the same "ultimate" product, as though there is a missing SKU in-between them. Looking around at competitor's me-too devices, pretenders to Surface's throne, no one else seems to have hit upon the missing SKU either.

I'm talking about a theoretical device I call the "surface book pro". Combining the best of both surface product lines into a machine with no compromises. Spro4-like device with a USB3 port and kickstand built into the tablet's body, but which has a surface book-like detachable 'hard' keyboard (with extra battery and dedicated gpu in it). You wouldn't necessarily have to launch a fifth surface product line (alongside surface 3, pro, book and hub), if there was a way to make both the spro type cover and the sbook cover be able to connect to the same top half tablet, then it would just be a matter of the user choosing the keyboard type that is right for their needs.

I'd also like it to include LTE like that one outlying configuration for... I believe it was the Surface Pro 2. This would allow increased portability with the 2in1 tablet/laptop, compared to currently, where it is confined to acting more like a laptop only, in wifi enabled areas.

Been using a Surface 3 for almost a year. I have no idea what the hell you're talking about its awesome. One of the best designed pieces of hardware since the Zune HD.

Need to connect my SP4 up to my monitor (3440x1440) - I tried using a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter I had lying around but it seemed limited to 1080p. The monitor should support native resolution on both HDMI and DisplayPort (limited to 50Hz on HDMI) - so should a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter be enough? I'd prefer not to use DisplayPort as that's in use on my desktop PC

I'm in the middle of upgrading my desktop so I've been using my SP4 i5 connected to my 3440x1440 monitor as a general use device and it holds up pretty well. Only have a displayport-HDMI adapter so the monitor is limited to I think 50Hz? but it is still great having so much space to use, and that tiny little slab driving it.

Although thinking about it, the number of pixels is about the same, right? 3440x1440 is about 5mp, and so is SP4 - just a taller, narrower screen.

Had a similar problem yesterday, tried to connect the sp4 to a 1440p desktop monitor with an old mini displayport to dvi adapter. Max resolution I could choose was 1080p. I hope the problem was with the adapter, I now ordered a mini displayport to displayport cable.

Finally got a new SP4 back from MS, all sleep/touchscreen issues gone. Guess that means my last device was a lemon. MBP goes back in its box.

That's great news. Did you do anything fancy with the installation or did you just install all the software again?

Haven't installed Office yet but so far only the bare minimum stuff like Notepad++,steam, bnet, VLC and chrome.

El Cheapo bluetooth mouse on the right angered me greatly last weekend by having a faulty middle click. I just bought the Microsoft Designer Mouse on the left as my SP4 mouse of choice. My first impressions of it are really good. It's comfortable, slim, well made, and works on shiny surfaces pretty well. Nothing fancy in the way of options, but I think it's pretty ideal for portable SP4 folk.

I recommend the MX Master from Logitech. It can be paired up to 3 devices (bluetooth or that Logitech receiver)
So I have the Surface Pro 4, Thinkpad T520 and my desktop connected to it.

It is a bit expensive but very comfortable.

Touchscreen is registering repeated touches near the top right corner so I'm gonna see if a MS store will give me a replacement. If not then I'll send it in.

The store I phoned said they won't be able to transfer any data beforehand so I guess I'll just take everything off it. Luckily it's not much.

anyone getting terrible performance with Chrome lately? Freezing and crashing.

also why does the iOS keyboard by Microsoft have swype and word suggestions but the Windows 10 touch keyboard is totally barebones?

Hi I've just bought a surface pro 4 m3 for 800 new with cover.

I had the first surface pro and I was reluctant to dive again but what a great piece of hardware. No complaint beside the back material that can scratch to easily (I have one already and I always have a cover )

Anyway. I dont play pc games but I use remote play ps4 and I'd like to know which emulator can run well ?
I'm guessing Nes/snes generation is ok. N64/psx? Ps2?gc? Xbox?

Thanks

I was watching twitch on my i7/256GB/8GB pro 4 and the battery lasted about 2 hours. Is this normal? I've checked everything I can but it just seems to have terrible battery life.

What browser were you using and what was your screen brightness?

So, for my birthday, my wife just gave me a Surface Pro 4, the i7 with 8GB...She chose the model because she was making sure I could game on it, but, truth be told, I doubt I will play anything too intensive. Big gaming I'd keep for my desktop, but this might see stuff like Defense Grid, Roller Coaster Tycoon 2, Stealth Bastard, Hearthstone, that sort of thing. At very most, I might log into Marvel Heroes, but not expect much.

If I move to the i5, what sort of benefits am I looking at (beyond the savings). Quieter? Not as hot? Longer battery life?

Another thumbs up for Opera on the Surface Pro 4. Much better performance and less memory hogging on my 4GB machine. I've never had any touch input problems, tbh.
I uninstalled Chrome from my SP4 a while ago, as it has a nasty habit of just sitting around in RAM.

These three things and nothing else, most likely.

Hmm I might try Opera as well. Would be weird as I've been using Chrome for years now.

Is Opera being based off Chromium mean that it's essentially Chorme under the hood?

yep it's the same as Chrome in terms of rendering, but you lose the Google-connected nature of chrome.
Personally I'm trying to cut out Google out of my diet, but some people seem to love staying Googly.

The problem with other browsers on Surface is that their touch implementation is garbage. Scrolling feels awful, the UI often doesn't support it as well and it just doesn't run as smooth.

Now if only Edge could get their right-click menu up to stuff. No refresh in there is horrible.

You can always use the mouse gestures extension and have a right click right swipe be F5.

Quicker and more intuitive than refresh with the right click menu.

Those things seem pretty big...especially the noise and batterylife...

Other than increased gaming performance, is there a noticeable bump in ability of the i7? It's really not like I'm going to try to play Mirror's Edge on it...

It would be better for everyone, if a "refresh page" button is included in the right-click menu. It's faster than a right-click-hold gesture anyway.

I don't think so.

I've been using mouse gestures for refresh in FF for years and it's quicker than right clicking and then left clicking refresh. It's one motion.

I'm sure it's a muscle memory thing as well. I really like the right-click solution Mozilla came up with, but I wish I could swap the buttons.

Work just got me a new Surface 4 Pro i7 to replace my desktop. It's pretty slick. Can't wait to see how gaming is on this thing. Not sure what else to do with it besides work!
