But by most accounts, this is an act of terror that IS linked to radical Islamic ideology. Why not be specific in calling it what it is?
Do you remember what it was like for Muslims after 9/11, or people who even "looked" Muslim? That's what he is trying to avoid.

Why are people so against something as simple as stronger checks for buying a gun? It wouldn't stop rational, law abiding citizens from buying guns. Even though those types can and will still commit atrocities, it might stop some. Why the fervent outrage?

Both guns were purchased legally by the shooter in the last few days. - ATF

ATF: The gunman legally purchased the firearms within the last week. In Florida.

And there it is

And here we go:

Obama was literally driven to tears on live TV at his frustration at the inability to get some form of gun control enacted, despite having the popular sentiment and despite the reams of statistics literally saying "DO THIS AND LESS PEOPLE WILL DIE".

Because one specific industry outspends any other on lobbying to keep their profits flowing.

It's really not Obama that people should be demanding resign.

My heart goes out to the victims and their families.

This hits very close to home, just a few hours north of here... I just keep imagining this happening to my LGBT friends, them being gunned down by a heartless, disgusting troglodyte bigot. It fills me with both a deep rage and feeling of helplessness...

Stay safe, LGBT GAF, and all LGBT people.

Strick gun laws and limited access to explosives didn't stop the terrorists in France and it won't stop the terrorists in the United States. Religious zealotry is the root of the problem and as long as there are intolerant religious zealots in the world who are brain washing people through a warped ideology, attacks like this will continue, both here in America and abroad.

How have mods not come in here yet? Isn't this supposed to be a news thread? Go start a gun debate thread somewhere else.
A man legally purchased guns and used them a few days later to murder 50 people.

Truly it's a mystery why there is a gun debate happening in this thread. /s

so it seems clear that this guy was a homophobe with a short fuse. also apparently a wife beater? and of course he had no criminal record. so there's another layer on this shit cake.

BREAKING: ATF Orlando "We have completed urgent traces on firearms involved in #Orlando shooting. Firearms purchased legally."

Withdrawing from Iraq lead to creation of ISIS - creation of such organization is only possible in vacuum where government doesn't control situation in their own country.

Although you are correct - keeping strong dictatorship Saddam had would also prevent creation of ISIS - no need to care about all those brown people he was killing in his own country.

Not about keeping, so much as not intervening. If there was a moral crusade against authoritarian governments on, it would have been a pretty long list and Saddam wouldn't have been at the top.

Are you sure that those strict gun laws haven't averted many other violent events?

Also, the Oklahoma City bombing was done with an illegally made bomb, but interestingly enough after enacting a bunch of controls around all the materials used to make the bomb, nobody has been able to pull off another OKC. Funny how that works.

Did you watch his statement? He did NOT downplay it. He's just not amplifying that particular phrase, for good reason.

You know the way this works, Obama hates America and always blames us for everything. He is a closet Muslim and won't go after ISIS and radical Islam, he is weak and always uses indecisive language.

I'm done with it, I don't know what more people want this President to do with regards to radicalism. Least he has accepted his L on gun control, it was close guys he almost came for our guns. You know Clinton will come and get em, better stock up!

This asshole was questioned three times by the FBI and was still able to buy weapons.

Just think if someone would try and pass some legislation that could have stopped this...oh wait. Damnit Obama and you libtards!

And acting like this is solely a terrorism problem plays right into the hands of ISIS. It's a win-win for them, and we fall for it every time.

How would you even stop a person on a watch list from purchasing a gun? You can't tell them they're on an FBI watch list. If you deny them for no reason, it becomes a legal battle.

Strick gun laws and limited access to explosives didn't stop the terrorists in France and it won't stop the terrorists in the United States.

This is specious reasoning. You have no idea how many more terrorist attacks or mass shootings would have occurred in France if not for strict gun laws.

Had the jackass republicans passed that law back in December, he probably wouldn't have been able to.

The NRA and everyone they've bought in politics have scared people for decades about the looming threat of people taking their guns. They've purchased the thoughts and motivations of the entire country.

Assault rifles available to civilians. Black market firearms. Background checks too lax. Watch list people legally buying firearms. It goes on and on...

even mild gun control laws can't get passed here. it's abhorrent. they tried to make it illegal for people on the terrorist watch list to buy a gun but it was voted down because it's too easy to get onto that list by mistake. the grotesqueness of it is beautiful in a way.

Again, what the fuck is so wrong with gun control laws only being able to "stop some massacres"? Stopping some massacres is good!

Do you remember what it was like for Muslims after 9/11, or people who even "looked" Muslim? That's what he is trying to avoid.

Sure, and I think that's a noble thing to do. But by ignoring the driving ideology behind this attack, we also shut down important discussions about radical Islam that we should be having.

If you don't mind me asking, what is also included in the "on and on" portion? I want to know given your previous statements what you fully consider "a gun problem"?

Not trying to grill you, I'm legitimately curious.

I think you're mistaking the point I'm trying to make and the question I'm asking.

I'm not going to apologize for that position. I've been hunting and shooting recreationally for almost 20 years now.

You can hunt just fine with a bolt action rifle. As for recreational shooting, sorry not worth people dying for. I would love to live in a world where everyone was like you or like my friends who enjoy shooting, but that is not the case.

I'm not offended. You don't get to drive the narrative like that. I just think it's disgusting to dismiss a right as a mere hobby and I think a lot of people born in America forget what makes the US great and enticing to the rest of the world.

Believe me, very few people outside of America think that your gun laws and the stubborn 'right to bear arms' are great and enticing. From outside, we look at them and know they're obviously stupid and counterproductive.

I say the above as someone who loves going to America and really likes the American people as a whole. But the blind spot many of you have when it comes to guns is just plain bizarre, and you need to start thinking logically about how best to stop the epidemic of mass shootings. Stricter gun laws have a definite big part to play.
