Nintendo @ E3 - No Direct, Just Zelda Treehouse Stream

This is exactly how you do it!

Forget everything else, there's only one thing worth seeing and that is The Legend of Zelda.

It's quite possibly the most big time release since the last Legend of Zelda and it deserves it's spotlight.

I'm loving this. First, we got that leaked image of Link climbing yesterday. After that, my hype meter went from 0-100 real quick. Now, we're going to have a full day of streaming not only the game, but developer interviews and other information. This is exactly what I've been waiting for! I'll bet you they're gonna show it ALL! Every single area in the game is gonna be shown on NX hardware.

HYPE IS OFF DA METER

The NX doesn't exist.

easy there, buddy.

That's not a mistake. It's a dialect thing. Really depends when and where you grew up. I hear:

Meh-rio
Mary-o
Mah-rio

Hmm, when you put it that way, I guess she says it more like Mary-o. But, I think it is still a mistake, because when Mario and others say his name, they say Mah-rio. :)

Aonuma and Myamoto are already in LA.

Shit, so jealous.

For a series with Zelda in the title, the games never really seem to be about Zelda.

Zelda is usually a focal point of the games. In OoT the goal was to help her gather sages so she could seal Ganon, in Wind Waker the whole impetus for the plot was Ganon trying to find Zelda, and in Skyward Sword she pretty much manipulated everything that happened. Really TP is the only game that sidelined Zelda all that much.

The map is more based around the original than anything.
The geography of the map most closely resembles OoT, as Enduin's map shows. All of the regions of Zelda U's map match up with OoT's regions. Pretty much the only thing that made people think of Zelda 1 was the shape of Lake Hylia, but that's the shape it is in Twilight Princess, as well.

I still think this is largely based on the map from Zelda 2:

The volcano in the northeast of the Zelda U map is very likely Death Mountain though, so that would be the only inconsistency from what I can tell... the town in the northeast of the Zelda 2 map is called Darunia, but the game is pretty clear about that being Death Mountain in the west. Who knows.

As for that region in the very southwest, I kinda think that'll be a "barrier" in a way, sorta the end of where we can explore the world. Maybe a giant gorge, or some other type of natural-ish barrier.

Edit:

Also note the cemetery in the southwest of the Zelda 2 map and the spooky church in the new Zelda U artwork... coincidence??

This is even more off. Zelda U's world is a giant field in the center surrounded by mountains and smaller regions beyond those mountains. Zelda 2 is a pair of large islands in a sea with a straight separating them down the middle.

Majora's Mask only features Zelda in a single flashback and she's namedropped in Link's Awakening but otherwise doesn't appear at all. Correct me if I'm wrong but she's a no show in Triforce Heroes as well (unlike her dress).

That said she's got a wonderful role in Spirit Tracks.

Oh my god yes, I have been wanting this for so long. One of the best Mario games, fuck all the haters!

+1 I wish it could come out on Wii U but without analogic trigger that's not ideal I guess.
Maybe a HD remake on NX or with GC finally on virtual console (C'mon Nintendo use digital triggers)

Haha I love this. Bless you and your hype

Is NX still out this fiscal year? Have we ever had a major console remain without an official announcement so close to launch?

Depends on what you mean by official announcement. Nintendo has already publicly announced NX for March 2016. In terms of details, in 2013 we saw Sony reveal PS4 in February and Microsoft reveal XB1 in May, with both released in November. So by that metric we still have some time before Nintendo would be seen as bucking any recent trends.

This .gif encapsulates some of the kind of fun to be had in the game:

I'd say the only thing remotely accurate to my play experience was the bottom left one where Blue Link is spamming the cheerleader button. I never stopped pressing it tee hee

I also threw my friends into lava pits constantly c:

That's true about the official pronunciation, but it's not really a mistake on the person's part. You can't demand that a person easily change his/her accent. At that point you're being a nuisance to a real life person's years of upbringing over silly video game canon.

Still not seeing really seeing it. OoT still feels like the best matchup. Then again that SW area could be the Lost Woods now. It would make for a great, giant, densely wooded area. though how to explain why it somehow migrated west over lake Hylia... But that would make the SE Ordona Province or equivalent. Game Awards footage did appear to start there and we didn't really see a ton of dense trees like you would expect for Kokiri Forest/Lost Woods. So that's something to ponder. Death Mountain though is just a real issue with Zelda U and Adventures of Link comparison. A mystical woods migrating is unlikely but feasible, but an entire mountain range?

Then again this is Nintendo. While they make connections between each game they are always pretty fast and loose with the exact details. As long as the big picture works and make sense they've always been OK with some rather blatant, but ultimately unimportant, contradictions and inconsistencies.

This is even more off. Zelda U's world is a giant field in the center surrounded by mountains and smaller regions beyond those mountains. Zelda 2 is a pair of large islands in a sea with a straight separating them down the middle.

Obviously it's not an exact recreation of anything, especially not Zelda 2 what with all of the large rivers and bays. I just meant that a lot of the landmarks and environments are strikingly similar to that map of Zelda 2. And again, OoT's map was also loosely based off of the Zelda 2 map so it clearly hasn't been tossed by the wayside by Nintendo.

But what I mean is this:

-Look at the northwest corner of the Zelda 2 map- we have 2 deserts and a large palace in the center of a lake. Look at the northwest corner of the Zelda U map- we agree that it's likely a desert, and look- there's a lake with a small landmass in the center!

-In the center/north of the Zelda 2 map we have an Island palace and the "Great Palace" which was the end palace of the game. I don't know if that is supposed to be Hyrule Castle (as that hadn't existed at the time) but based on every other subsequent game having Hyrule Castle town in that area, we can safely assume that the great palace is supposed to be Hyrule Castle.

-The southeast of the Zelda 2 map is the most forested area we see, and that lines up with the Zelda U map.

-Cemetary in the southwest of Zelda 2, Spooky Church in the southwest of Zelda U, possibly even representing that dungeon from Zelda 1.

-Maze island at the very northeastern shore of Zelda 2, Spiral peninsula at that point in Zelda U.

-Death Mountain in Zelda U where Darunia (sage of fire) town is in Zelda 2. Also the Death Mountain of Zelda 2 lines up with the large mountain with the circle in the Zelda U map.

-Ocean coast on the east for both maps.

Obviously it's not a 1 to 1 comparison but you can't deny that the maps have a lot of these similarities. And again, OoT's map is based on Zelda 2's but I really see more of Zelda 2's map specifically in the Zelda U map than OoT. Really the only major difference besides the change in size of the rivers and the northern coast is the name of the mountain in the west.

Edit:

Exactly 24 hours!! Hype!!

What the hell is this and why have I never seen it before
and why is it giving me Lost Izalith flashbacks
?

That's a good point, I agree. I guess if it were a real person, it would be different, right?

Yeah, and that also varies! I know people who don't appreciate their names being Americanized for example. Dah-veed, yes... Day-Vid, NO.

Anyway! Mario...I'm cool with whatever variation as long as someone's not calling him Marty, Maury or something :p
