Absolutely, if these can run 4k games at 30 fps it's going to be awesome. I don't have a 4k tv and haven't had a need for one but I would absolutely buy one for these consoles next year.

4k will be a struggle, but you will get 1080p with amazing IQ at 60fps. which is good enough.

Translation...

We need much more brute force for our less than desirable engine optimization for VR.

They had nothing new to the table for software really, so I see why this was done to shift focus.

This just shows how ignorant you are in knowing what it takes and how much hardware you need to make VR very good. VR takes a lot of horsepower to run at the resolutions and framerate that won't make you sick. Clearly, you don't understand the requirements for high end games in VR and how much horsepower they require to run just decently.

Exactly this. It's a gamble. There is no telling that a more powerful system will mean they are back to being number 1 in the U.S. The first thing they have to hit is the price and I remain skeptical that this thing is going to be anything less than 499$. It's a reset for MS to try and get back the market.

Not to mention if Neo launches this holiday season and has a whole year to itself on the market.

This is a big gamble for Microsoft and i think they may have lost. The fact the announcement had no details besides 6TF, leads me to believe it was a reactionary announcement. Sony seem to be more in control.

Though all of this is my speculation and time will tell....

I am really curious how this thread would have turned out if the idea of iterative consoles hadn't come out before.

That's not me trying to call hypocrisy on anyone, I am actually legitimately curious.

And so it is AMD's Vega after all, isn't it? I wonder if this got Sony legit shook. They can't go forward with their Polaris plans.

I hope Sony is crying and whimpering somewhere in a corner. Competition is good for consumers. Sony and Microsoft going into a power war is a win for everyone.

Sony must be worried about a console that's 17 months away. It's all over now rip PS4 and the 40+ million and growing gamers.

You had a good run.

LOL, you guys are funny. You honestly think that power was the reason why PS4 is winning? Dream on.

To the people who know PC gaming, how much would it cost to build a PC with comparable specs today? Is this as powerful as a mid-tier PC or is it more in line with higher end PCs?
That 4K line has me pretty confused, because I thought that was only really prevalent in higher end machines(without compromising other specs that is).

http://pcpartpicker.com/list/hV4JxY

I guess ~$500 for a typical barebones pcpartpicker build, but the scorpio GPU sounds different than the RX 480 if it has 320 GB/s bandwidth. Maybe it's using a downclocked version of the next step up?

Personally for me I don't want to get my hands messy upgrading parts in this. If I eventually buy a Windows 10 PC with a beefy graphics card it will be an added bonus but I prefer to game on consoles and not sit at a workstation and I don't want a traditional PC where I do work on in my living room.

I guess I can see this. Personally, my desktop PC has been exclusively for gaming and multimedia streaming for maybe 5 years now. Anything work related is done on my laptop so my PC is free to be another black box beside my TV.

I'm 200% ok with paying through the nose regularly for more power. But I want to cast off all ties to the past. I don't want to pay a ton and have old architecture and last gen laggards holding in. I hate this strategy from all parties, Sony AND Microsoft. I hate this!

Exactly! I don't want 6TF if devs are gonna be hampered by already dated hardware. Not a fan.

Now they know how the Xbox department felt when PS4 was announced to be 399.

I don't see why.

Like...breaking cycles makes this huge increase in power meaningless.

It won't change the fact that xbox has lost all foothold in japan.

Won't change that big devs will still go for the console which has the most people and will not abandon huge portion of the market just for power. The parity will stay here unless you want to torpedo sales.

Won't change that the xbox one and the ps4 still exist and will still be getting games

The scorpio is even more baffling to me than the neo which was already a bad idea to me. Simultaneously boasting high specs and high prices while promoting shorter iterative cycles like phones where significant jumps in power are less important

Except the 1070 alone costs around 450 does it not? So if the Scorpio can sell a whole console for let's say 500 , why spend 1000+ on a PC build to get that same performance.

The equivalent AMD GPU is the 480 which costs $200. Nvidia terraflops =/= AMD terraflops.

Neo is likely Sony's answer to Xbox One S. Refreshed specs to handle 4k and HDR video and in Sony's case PSVR.

I'm certain Sony will drop their answer to Scorpio by Spring 2018. The only question is, what will this strategy do to current sales?

Will be interesting to see when Playstation will offer their next bump.

Neo 2016(?), Scorpio 2017, new Playstation 2018? 2019?

And so it is AMD's Vega after all, isn't it? I wonder if this got Sony legit shook. They can't go forward with their Polaris plans.

You can't just say goodbye to the investments you made. It is what it is, PS4 Neo will do just fine. But multiplatform games will be superior on Xbox Scorpio.

You can't effectively compare TFLOPS across architectures like this, historically Nvidia's cards are significantly more effective at utilizing those flops.

What you can think of is that a 6flop AMD driven console is just over the threshold required to run a current XBone game as-is at 4K, and still under the threshold required to run a PS4 game as-is at 4K.

Is there some sort of conversion table for AMD flops vs. Nvidia flops?

500€ minimum for this and it's really going to appeal to the really hardcore gamer.
I think they're right to go with shorter generations though: I won't be getting this or a PS4k. Maybe the next consoles. Zero interest in 4K gaming.

So, I don't have anything against iterative updates as long as BC is maintained.

But…

Optimising for 4K-gaming seems like such a waste.

The same hardware specced for a 1080p game would look insanely good. Look at the IQ of Uncharted 4, Doom etc.

I'm hoping that Scorpio games rated for 4k get to have higher settings at 1080p.

Those mobo pics are more likely a mock up than the actual hardware coming in Holiday 2017. They probably just wanted to show something.

Why wouldn't I? It's not like I would switch over to PC to spite consoles.

It just wouldn't make sense getting a new box every year when you can just upgrade a PC.

The MS defense force is active alright lol

You are missing my point and this isn't a MS defense force comment. If you skip consoles because you hate iterative ones, then you can do that. They won't stop you. They are releasing cross play and cross buy games. Thus, they will get your money if you buy their SW in either location. The Xbox is a simplistic delivery system with multiple price points. They can never stop you from going PC, their entire goal is to give you options to buy the software. Why else would they be getting rid of first party console exclusives?

Do people still not understand that you make money on SW sales and not HW sales. If you want to go PC only, feel free to do so. You will likely buy their games as they will be available there. If you don't want PC, here are your console options.

naw i don't agree with this, you can have games run on the same hardware, and there could be still a huge difference, the last of us on ps4 still looks great, i can really appreciate clean IQ and 60fps, its a night and day difference. i'm playing bloodborne, and the framerate is bad and iq look like shit, the old ps3 game on ps4 looks far more pleasing to my eyes.

Don't you think it will be so disappointing if they announce TLOU2 for PS4 and PS3?
This is what going to happen for PS4 and Neo, Xbox one and Scorpio plus Neo 2,3,4 Scorpio 5,6,7 and so on.

Generation leap is what make console generation exiting, bigger more complex level, higher AI count, destructible etc, not just higher res, higher frame.
If I want those, I have PC for that, I'm just sad console turning into PC in a console box.

From the great words of Rorschach, "Hrm." I currently own a solid PC with a 980ti but I miss the under the TV box set up. I guess I have plenty of time and with the Play Anywhere initiative I could easily transfer over my games. Just wondering what you guys think? I have a 6700k 24GB ddr4 ram and a 980ti so how does that really compare with the Scorpio? I got that HP deal posted on NeoGAF a while ago. I use my MacBook for work and this new PC is just for play. I do miss having a dedicated box. But playing Forza 3, Recore and Gears 4 on full blast will definitely hold me over until the Scorpio. What would you do?

PS: I'm a slave to capitalist consumerism and like anything new and/or shiny.

Yup, same here. Only reason I went over to the Sony side was cause it was the more powerful console.

I will probably do the same if Neo turns out to be weaker as expected. But not everyone will do the same. Sony is still in a good position as the market leader, with their upgraded console probably coming out sooner, and probably being cheaper.

Calling it right now, this is going to be ps2 vs the of Xbox all over again.

Sony will get a cheaper box out the door, way ahead of ms. Neo lower speced but with the ms console having less exclusives and a lot of mildy optimised sw
It's a little different though because both companies are maintaining the relevance of the last gen consoles
They're getting out the door faster with a box that plays the same games as their current one.

That said, generations are why I like consoles. I like buying a box knowing it will be supported for at least 6 years and that every game I play on it was built with my hardware in mind. Iterative consoles have me seriously considering building a gaming PC.
I've always thought that console gaming was at its best with games that feel custom tailored for the hardware. Unfortunately, starting with PS3/360, very few games felt like that anymore. Most of them felt like PC games that were asking just a little more than the hardware could comfortably provide (and in fact, most games were made on multiplatform game engines that run better on a decent PC).

But yeah, this is great news for PC gamers. We get to play all future Xbox exclusives at higher settings than console. And future games will all be built to be scalable across multiple hardware profiles, so less "consoleitis"

Think 360 vs PS3.

This isn't what I have been told by a vetted insider on here. He says Sony has a version of Neo under consideration that is comparable to Scorpio, but the pricing is an issue.

That's fine, but be wary of which 'insiders' here are worth trusting. There was an awful lot of nonsense peddled here in the arena of specs in the past.

Not ignorant, just not drinking the koolaid and can think of this from a strategic pov.

So say PS Neo launches this year (because if you are so set on believing in rumors, you must go all the way). That means Sony will leave MS in the dust power wise and sales wise even more so for one year. You honestly believe that 'obviously everyone will wait for a scorpio'? lol come on now. Tell you what, let's see how this plays out and have this convo again. Bookmark this. Sony is not at a disadvantage as you may think they are here.

Oh and Sony did bump specs for PS4 after the initial dev kits fyi. But again let's see the final specs release and the launch date and see if your theory of people not buying Neo and holding out for Scorpio play out

Seems like you're picking and choosing what to respond to in order to make yourself feel correct whilst being hypocritical.

Your argument was no one will buy an Xbox Slim now because the Scorpio was announced.

My argument was that things are now turned around because those who want the more powerful console will go for an Xbox Scorpio which is a turn around from Microsofts previous situation. Now that the Scorpio was not only announced first along with being the more powerful console, the NEO announcement will be lackluster and won't be able to compete with the with the Scorpio as it's an entire two terraflops behind, it not only has a much shorter turn around time to improve its specs. (Also lmao at "but Sony improved dev kits!1! By what? Increments? Of 0.2?) So anyone looking for the more powerful console will skip over buying the ps4neo and buy an Xbox Scorpio, along with the Scorpio releasing late 2017 it's got plenty of time to make actual changes to bump it's power after the NEO even releases.

But honestly it just sounds like you're a fanboy so I'm not going to bother.

Is that really strong enough to play games like BF1 at 4K?
I kinda doubt it.
If you are talking about playing it at high settings and 60 FPS, then no, it's not.

I'd get a Steam link.

Is there some sort of conversion table for AMD flops vs. Nvidia flops?

Just compare AMD to AMD. Which this is basically the 480 at $200(Probably the $230 version overclocked). It's a great value for the money, but it's nowhere near the 1070 or 1080 in terms of performance.

Today it would be significantly more expensive than it will be one month from now.
One month from now it will be the new mid-tier (with comparable GPU performance in the $250 range).

What a month from now? Just the depreciation on new products?
I'm on the fence about building a PC so I'm just curious if it's a bad time.

The same way you can run the same games on low end and high end PCs but with auto optimisation. Come on people, its really not that hard to understand.

Honestly this isn't even true. i can't run Witcher 3 on my 2008 system. There are generations on PC too.

Yea, poor Sony.

Woody-Harrelson-Cry.gif

Lmao.

Never would have predicted this back when X1 was announced. Phil has made some huge course corrections since taking over.
