So, for those of us who are technically incompetent, what does this mean? Really good?

Yes, its fucking great news. AMD Zen will be launching later this year.
People were thinking they will not upgrade the CPU just like Sony but that is not the case, this is full hardware revamped.

So, I have an insane theory for you guys, and you'll think I'm crazy, but here it goes: I think that Scorpio will use an ARM-based CPU. Here's my reasoning.

  • MS didn't seem to want to say anything beyond "8-cores"
  • ARM cores are actually getting pretty damn fast these days
  • I don't think that 8 Jaguar cores would be fast enough for Scorpio, and also think that 4 Zen cores with 2-way SMT would be fast enough already
  • AMD, in this tweet, said "SoCs," seemingly refraining from calling them both APUs
  • The way that tweet was worded makes it seem like XboneS actually counts as one of the design wins, making AMD's three wins Xbox One S, PS4 Neo, and Scorpio. This also means that one of these three would be ARM, and Scorpio is the only possibility
  • While the rumored Xbox TV could be the ARM win, there's not much reason to not simply use an off-the-shelf SoC in that
  • They're not launching until next year, perhaps because ARM needs one more generation to get up to snuff?

It seems insane, but the writing seems to be on the wall. Thoughts?

It would kill compatibility, so no. It's going to be Zen.

Who cares? Microsoft needs good games, something they seem to be sorely lacking. Power means nothing without class. Microsoft has no class.

I frickin knew it

I actually thought they had lot of good games at least most of them are coming soon.

I still think it's going to start at $399 for 500GB and keep going up from there. They have to if they want to mass market it. Unless they really do go for the high end and go $499 for 500GB. It's really gonna be telling once we know the price of the PS4k.

Forza horizon 3, RECORE (still not sure about that one tbh), Dead Rising 4 and Gears of War 4 is a pretty decent holiday 2016 list

So, what's going to happen to sales of the Xbox One with a revision coming out and then a new model 12 months later? Doesn't inspire confidence in the brand.

The most hype I was this whole E3. I honestly didn't think they would even hint at the scorpio. Best MS conference in years. Lots of hardware talk also which I loved.

Yep. I think $399 will be the target price for the high end stuff, increasing in price with each hard drive increase.

Spoke with two fairly high up people at Microsoft, and it's looking like an AMD Zen. One even said it flat out. Only reason I'm not quoting them outright, or saying who is cause I don't think they want me to.

Hm... That means that XboneS doesn't count as a new win (not shocking). The mystery of the ARM chip continues.

Kind of figured. I was only expecting a 4 core Zen CPU, but 8 cores and 16 threads would be downright incredible. We're talking about a massively improved CPU over what the Xbox One and PS4 currently have.

You at e3?

Yep, been participating in Xbox fanfest, and talked to multiple people (higher ups that should know this stuff) at MS before and after the Scorpio announcement. It probably also helps that they all pretty much remember me from last year and some even know who I am on both Twitter and here on GAF.

It really does seem like they aren't holding back on any aspect of this console, which is nuts. They pretty much say they can say most powerful console ever because they are getting everything they want to build it and then some. Only reason they don't go even further is because you have to be somewhat responsible when putting the pieces together.

Damn that is the megaton of E3 right there. I was 90% certain it was Zen but 8 core Zen with 6tf GPU and holy crap.

Responsible as in price I take it. Obviously there's more, but I'd think that'd be the overall message with a cmment like that.

When a PC gamer tries to run their game at 4K, they're usually also turning up all sort of other graphical niceties well beyond what the console versions display at the same time.

Also finnicky framerates for PC gamers is usually anything below a reasonably steady 60fps... whilst in console land, we're exalting the handful of games that manage to hold a solid 30fps.

So I can see 4K on consoles being more attainable than many PC gamers would have you believe.

Well of course, many PC developers have said they are able to get almost double the performance out of a set box console compared to PC-equivalent hardware. The developers of the PC Metro games said this last year in how they can get double the performance out of console hardware vs the equivalent of PC hardware....So imagine a console with 6TF of power can do, as for a 60FPS at 4K...time will tell if a 6TF can attain that but i would bet it can with nice visuals at the same time for a 6TF console...

That shit's $299 and will probably come with a game or two this holiday season. I don't think there's cause for concern since Scorpio will be targeting a different audience than people who buy 3-year-old consoles.
Besides, the people who hold off on buying an Xbox because of this news would presumably then buy a Scorpio when the time comes, so why should they worry?

360 was 240 GFLOPs in 2005.
XBOne was 1230 GFLOPs in 2013. that's ~400 % in 8 years.
Scorpio will be 6000 GFLOPs in 2017 that's ~380% in 4 years, sounds like a nicer jump to me.

But the unlike the 360, XBOne and Scorpio are similar in architecture, so it might not be an accurate comparison to compare straight FLOPs against the more exotic architecture of the 360.

Holy fuck.

6 Tflops... that's double the power of my GTX 770.

Well, your 770 was $400 in 2013. Scorpio doesn't arrive until 4 years after that date, it isn't that amazing. But still better than the 360 to One jump.

Here are some average 4k framerate numbers from the GTX 1080, a 9TFLOP card:

Crysis 3: 39,8
Tomb Raider: 43,2
Witcher 3: 44,1
Metro Last Light: 52,7
Hitman: 46

Source

But hey, set yourself up for a disappointment.

We should really be checking games like forza apex instead.
It's hard to find benchmarks of it, but supposedly a 980TI could run 4k 60 unless it rained.

I wonder about how many will have a 4K TV at that point though, it might just be better to focus on 1080P for the first years.

They literally had no choice, either this thing was going to be a beast or Sony whoops them again.

Making a move this early in terms of straight up saying what their specs are. Is slighty crazy but puts pressure on Sony to show their specs as well.

I'm thinking back to the X1 reveal after Sony played their winning DDR5 hand at the PS4 event and MS could only muster up some bullshit stats on the X1 specs. I think at that point MS knew Sony had got em.

But you can only really play that trick once...

Zen (which expected to be on par with high end intel CPUs) coupled with 6TF GPU and 320GB/s memory. Gonna blow the shit out of the console market.

This device is a monster.

Look how great these consoles are doing with 1.3-1.8 TF GPUs and a shitty netbook CPU.

And now imagine what is the potentials with real deal CPU and a 5x GPU power.

4K draws 4x the amount of 1080p so it makes sense that the Scorpio would have that to match.
What does it mean in practical terms? It means the game looks a lot sharper, but it's not going to be a fundamentally different experience.
Instead what it is going to have is something called scaleable resolution. So the game knows how that if you pop it in a xbox one it can do 1080p, if you put it in a xbox one S it can do upscaling to 4k if you have a 4k tv, and if you have a scorpio you can do native 4k.

Question is; will these games also have a mode that allows you to play 1080p on scorpio? Say if gears of war (which will support Scorpio with scaleable resolution which they confirmed at a interview with gamespot earlier today) could you then choose the resolution and then get 45 or 60 fps instead of 30 fps at 4k?
We have to remember, Xbox 360 can do 4k technically. 4K or whatever resolution you have is a limitation that we have because of the graphical fidelity. you can play old quake 3 engine based games at 4k with an insane high framerate on modern hardware.
What hurts when you have a high resolution is drawing that complicated geometry at such a high frequency.
Its important to remember; Scorpio might still have the same problems with choosing between 4k and 30 fps or a lower resolution and 60 fps. That new power is nullified by more beautiful graphics.

It's better to think of it like when you buy a new generation of graphic cards. If you have a GTX 970, it might net you around 45 FPS on average on ultra settings in Witcher 3 at a high resolution.

The new generation, Pascal, with the GTX 1070 might run Witcher 3 at ultra settings at 75 FPS. It's a net difference in 20 fps along with better thermals and a lower power draw.
In that sense there is no need to think your xbox one is to be thrown into the trash because scorpion is coming out. It's a completely different price point for gamers who really care about having the most powerful console. I'd imagine for many players, sticking with a 1080p HDTV and a 1080p console is going to make sense.
A big deal for the push for scorpio and neo is also with regards to VR.

They'll announce a new Iphone soon but that doesn't mean that my Iphone 6 is to be thrown in the trash or new iOS games don't support it.
In these ecosystems the trend is clear on tablets and smartphones; people dont upgrade often, and that has made the sales of those devices go down.
I don't think Scorpio or Neo is designed for core consumers to go out and upgrade. With that being said it would be quite terrific if you could get 50% off by upgrading to the new device.
I think they might want to charge more for Scorpio and Neo because they already have the ability to sell the same console with almost all of the same functionality and value at a much lower price point. And so having a higher SKU creates a new enthusiasm marked for consoles, while not cannibalizing the core market who really only jump on consoles once they hit the <200 dollars market.

So I think there is a rift in audiences here. You might decide to get a Xbox One S and then upgrade to a Scorpio in 3-4 years time, when a Scorpio successor might be released.
Just like with Android and IOS devices, you upgrade when you need to, in accordance with your needs.
I had a Iphone 4S for 3-4 years and I did not want to upgrade. I know people who have their phones for even longer and who can still use most of the apps and functionality.
It's not important that some systems have a 4k mode with better graphics. What is important is that you can buy a game and not be excluded regardless if you have the budget, mid or high end system. I don't think the idea of consoles is being usurped. It's still as plug and play as it ever was, and this anger towards Scorpio and Neo reminds me of when Microsoft introduced different SKUs with the 360 over 10 years ago, when gamers would call the 360 Core pathetic.

Just let Panay talk about Scorpio for 90 minutes at next year's e3

Dude will have you dropping your drawls in a heart beat

I have a feeling it'll officially shown for the first time at the big Microsoft hardware event early next year, for the Redstone 2 update and other devices reveal, led by Panos.

Your information is very inaccurate. Oles shishkovstov was talking about the Xbox 360 and PS3 which were completely different architectures. Being so close to PC in x86 the gains are very little now, as proved by all ports of this generation, and this interview was published back in august of 2014 so not much has changed . You also get DX12 and vulkan on PC now which lessens the gap even more.

It will be a minimum 1 TB internal HDD. I don't think they mess with a 500gb for the Scorpio. I am actually thinking the minimum will be 2tb. If Scorpio will have 4k games, these will take a bit more space than a traditional Xbox One/PS4 game, especially with higher res textures.

I am thinking $399.99 1 TB w/4k Blu Ray drive and another with a 2TB for $449.99. 18 months from now, these specs should be able to be priced at around $399.99. The big question I have is the amount of memory it will have. I am thinking 12-16gb.

I think almost all games will just have better visuals and run at 1080 60fps. That's what people will prefer generally.

The Scorpio is for current console owners to upgrade to from XB1/PS4.

Most people that haven't come to the current gen yet will buy XB1 or PS4 instead.

If Scorpio is more powerful than PS4 Neo some might opt for XB1 so they have the more powerful upgrade path currently.

It really is anyone's game right now. Love the competition.

The only real downfall for me about the Scorpio announcement is that it was too soon. I really don't want to listen to fanboys argue about 6TFLOPS and 4k for a year and a half.

I really don't.

I was surprised about the detailed specs. Last week the rumours said they had not decided on tflops yet. Is this a bit too soon though? If Sony wants they can change their plans and take advantage of this knowledge. Or has it been confirmee pretty much that Neo is pretty much final specs? Wonder when we will hear and see more.

Scorpio reveal next spring?

Excellent, we need more verified sources here on GAF. Hopefully a mod will be contacting you soon and you can get that tag.

Huh? What does him speaking with Microsoft employees at E3 have to do with him being an insider? Also, he's been around for a minute.

He said he had information from two fairly high high up people at Microsoft. That's great news, the more vetted sources we have on GAF, the better.
