Nintendo Treehouse Live @ E3 2016 Thread [*LIVE*] (No childish commentary allowed)

I never played Sticker Star, what was so atrocious about it? Seems like the series has always veered on the casual side of things. I love TTYD, but thought the Wii one was boring as shit. Color Splash looks better than that at the very least.

Worst part was that they made almost every single character a toad. Probably the most fun part of the first three games was the varied environments and characters that you encountered on your adventures. Here and in Sticker Star you're just stuck with toad, toad and more toad. Hope you like playing find the toad, talk to the toad, help the toad, etc because that's literally all of the character interaction you're gonna get.

They switched up the battle system quite a bit and moved away from the strong plot/dialogue focus of the first three games.

The main problem are a reduction of RPG elements, original characters, and overall story compared to the first two games. That's the major issue some people have.

The first two/three games in the series had a nice turn based system in the more traditional sense where you had a hammer/jump attack along with partner special attacks that required unique timings/actions in order to preform. This game and Sticker Star completely scrapped that and made you gather cards/stickers in the over world to use every attack, even your basic ones. But perhaps the worse thing is the fact that the past games, especially Thousand Year Door (the second Paper Mario), had such wonderful partner characters and a wide variety of races/character types. Sticker Star (and this game apparently) decided that it was better to get rid of almost all of those unique races/character types and have almost every character be a stupid fucking generic toad. The writing is still OK, but it definitely has lost a ton of its charm. Plus you don't have partners anymore, which were also a cool part of the combat and interactions from the earlier games.

The first three games, while not perfect, had great charm, amazing characters and writing, were funny, surprisingly dark, and had an addictive battle system. Sticker Star and this completely removed almost all of that and made all the combat look and feel tedious and lack rewards.

Basically they took a series beloved for reasons ABC and D and removed all of them.

On another note, this new one LOOKS gorgeous. I'd love it if it winds up actually being good. Looks like they're trying to justify battles with those enemy cards...
So from what I'm seeing, they are doubling down on a lot of this. Luckily for me, I won't have the frame of mind to see all of these issues outright but it sounds like a shame overall. I'm still gonna give it a shot since its so pretty but I'm hoping a lot of the mechanical issues of Sticker Star are mitigated in this one.

People have expressed many times what was bad about Sticker Star in this thread alone if you read the last page or two. For starters, every character is the same so the writing doesn't have a colorful cast to really leverage. Bowser doesn't talk and he was often the funniest character in previous games. There was no reason to fight battles. Boss battles were badly designed.

Honestly the card system really never bothered me all that much in Sticker Star, I just hated having to use specific ones in order to beat bosses. Hopefully they've got rid of that.

This looks fun, and absolutely gorgeous. Definite buy from me.

I feel like I need to get myself a membership card to join the small club of people who liked Sticker.

Yeah, that's pretty much why I stopped playing it entirely. It was fun otherwise so I'm looking forward to this assuming they've fixed that. Will it top Super Paper Mario? Probably not, but could still be a great game in its own right. The card battle system looks like way more fun already.

Honestly it really does seem like the biggest problem with the game's story is that everything was a Toad because I thought that sequence was pretty cute

I like the dialogue in this. It's good, and there seems to be plenty too. Just wish they hadn't cut the original characters. They could have at least differentiated all the toads.

Nothing.

It's a flawed, but pretty great, action adventure that happens to have a turn based battle system.

People hate it for the things it "lacks" compared to the first 2 games. It's a good game on it's own right with the best leveldesign in the entire series.

That was a great little puzzle. Simple, yet allowed for a gag too.

I really wish the combat system was different. I'm so on the fence about this when I should be completely hyped for it.

I think a lot of people would be more forgivin if the Toads appearances were unique since their dialogue is so full of personality and charm already.

Shufflegate? Kii!

this game makes me angry

not only did they go with a sticker star-styled game, which no one ever asked for, they didn't even fix any of the problems from sticker star, which was everything

battles are boring, they're even pointless (in fact it's best if you just avoided them because it only uses paint/stickers/cards/whatever), characters are just toad, the dialogue sucks and there's no partners

they took out everything that made paper mario fun

again
