I never played Sticker Star, what was so atrocious about it? Seems like the series has always veered on the casual side of things. I love TTYD, but thought the Wii one was boring as shit. Color Splash looks better than that at the very least.
They switched up the battle system quite a bit and moved away from the strong plot/dialogue focus of the first three games.
The main problem are a reduction of RPG elements, original characters, and overall story compared to the first two games. That's the major issue some people have.
The first two/three games in the series had a nice turn based system in the more traditional sense where you had a hammer/jump attack along with partner special attacks that required unique timings/actions in order to preform. This game and Sticker Star completely scrapped that and made you gather cards/stickers in the over world to use every attack, even your basic ones. But perhaps the worse thing is the fact that the past games, especially Thousand Year Door (the second Paper Mario), had such wonderful partner characters and a wide variety of races/character types. Sticker Star (and this game apparently) decided that it was better to get rid of almost all of those unique races/character types and have almost every character be a stupid fucking generic toad. The writing is still OK, but it definitely has lost a ton of its charm. Plus you don't have partners anymore, which were also a cool part of the combat and interactions from the earlier games.
So from what I'm seeing, they are doubling down on a lot of this. Luckily for me, I won't have the frame of mind to see all of these issues outright but it sounds like a shame overall. I'm still gonna give it a shot since its so pretty but I'm hoping a lot of the mechanical issues of Sticker Star are mitigated in this one.The first three games, while not perfect, had great charm, amazing characters and writing, were funny, surprisingly dark, and had an addictive battle system. Sticker Star and this completely removed almost all of that and made all the combat look and feel tedious and lack rewards.
Basically they took a series beloved for reasons ABC and D and removed all of them.
On another note, this new one LOOKS gorgeous. I'd love it if it winds up actually being good. Looks like they're trying to justify battles with those enemy cards...
You do know there is the exact same sort of quest in Thousand Year Door, right?Searching for Toads? This is exactly like Paper Jam.
Why... just why?
People have expressed many times what was bad about Sticker Star in this thread alone if you read the last page or two. For starters, every character is the same so the writing doesn't have a colorful cast to really leverage. Bowser doesn't talk and he was often the funniest character in previous games. There was no reason to fight battles. Boss battles were badly designed.I never played Sticker Star, what was so atrocious about it? Seems like the series has always veered on the casual side of things. I love TTYD, but thought the Wii one was boring as shit. Color Splash looks better than that at the very least.
Honestly the card system really never bothered me all that much in Sticker Star, I just hated having to use specific ones in order to beat bosses. Hopefully they've got rid of that.
This looks fun, and absolutely gorgeous. Definite buy from me.
I feel like I need to get myself a membership card to join the small club of people who liked Sticker.
Agree, looks really great.Visuals are really amazing.
