Scalebound (XB1/PC, 2017) Xbox E3 Briefing 2016

Blame PG for their incompetent communication and presentation. However I believe that there are some people are being intentionally obtuse.

They've been saying it's an RPG with big monster battles and coop from the beginning and they never said it was a character action game. But people seem to want it to be. It's silly.

Exactly.

Their messaging has been fine. That demo was a bit slow, but could've been worse. People just feel the need to be melodramatic. Frankly feels like this game has been a victim of consolewar rhetoric.

Is this game on the showfloor? I'm guessing no since I can't find any footage on YouTube. I really wanted to see something a little less scripted from this.

Think people have to remember this was a 4 player co op demo and for some reason the person controlling the main character didn't want to ride his dragon that much, unlike everyone else.

I don't know how indicative it is of the main campaign which is 100% the main reason I'm interested in the game in the first place.

I have faith in kamiya and his team. I honestly don't think the game was meant to be played by shooting arrows from 100 yards away.

So has there been any more gameplay of SB? Unlike SoT (which is 2017), we only get more gameplay shown at the press briefing. I hope that's not the case. I don't want to wait until gamescom again.

The fact it's multiplayer and you can't choose who you are just makes it even more baffling that we're stuck with mr Devil may whimper. I can't stand just one of him, why would I want 3 more of him with me? :P

I love Dragon's Dogma though and it's a sad state of affairs when a single player only game has better character choice than a multiplayer one and doubly so when they allow you to customise the living heck out of your dragon but not the obnoxious jerk you're going to be stuck representing yourself with for the entire game.

As long as you have to play 'Drew' I'm not touching this game and this is coming from someone who always liked stuff like Drakan or the like.

I don't think it looked bad, but it's definitely missing something to me. Like, I need to see more combat options and improved feedback on the attacks. The game doesn't feel as boisterous as DMC or Bayo, so that might be doing me in, although that part where he put on his headphones was pretty cool.

They have time, so I'm not too worried.

Well it's a single player game where your playing as your version of drew in multiplayer so their wouldn't be any customization. Not sure why people hate drew, though I'm one who likes DmC more than than the other games in that series.

If it was single-player only it wouldn't bother me quite as much but there's nothing more lame than a multiplayer game where everyone has to be the same person. It's part of the reason I didn't even look at Assassin's creed unity. It had a lot of problems beyond that but multiplayer all as the one guy? Nope. Nuh-uh. No.

Whether people like Drew may cry or not is down to the individual obviously, or at least he is as long as he's set in stone. I personally find him cringe-inducing at best.

I think the biggest problem with the game is the art direction, just doesn't stand out and looks fairly generic asian bright fantasy land. Dragons design are not inmediatly recognizible, not foot soldier enemies or that giant enemy crab. I guess it looks better on the artbook. The dragon armor is cool though.

Gameplay, I think it has the problem of been poorly shown and people expecting Platinum making more of the same. The first demo looked like early in the game, slow small enemies with a couple of weapons besides your melee swords. The second is a coop scene with as it seems, a low level main character while the other party members were high level. I guess that a more even fight will be longer and more tense. It seems to have the potential of having the replayability of dark soul, given that is well designed.

One interesting thing someone's pointed out is that for whatever reason, they don't seem to have done any 'easing' in this game. Considering it's something platinum use in almost all their games its absence is very peculiar :o
Though admittedly, Devil May Cry 2 is guilty of being one of the few games they've made without it as well and we know how well received that game was :P

If you're not familiar with it, the concept is explained in this handy lil video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2vCko6V4pQ (skip to 4:58 if you're only interested specifically in easing)

Currently working on getting all the info from the videos for my breakdown thread, there's alot of juicy stuff this demo has clued me in on, can't wait to get it all together.

Honestly, I feel the games biggest problem is whoever is doing these demos doesn't have any sense of style. They play so...boring. Hopefully we get more gameplay soon that shows some higher level abilities and mayhem.

What's interesting is between this giant monster fight and the FFXV one, this one is seems alot better to me, and assuming they fix some of the bigger issues people are having, might end up my go to ARPG.

Can't wait to try them both out.

Wonder what this will look like on Scorpio, the game still looks like it's struggling on the current hardware.

There is still so much to see given its an RPG and all. No real details on what the story front either. Speaking of RPG wonder of we will ever get Lost Odyssey 2?

I gotta say that it was super disappointing. When announced that they would have co-op boss battles I was worried that it would negatively effect the balancing and this demo just proved that to me. I'm not going to rule it out as it was one small slice but damn. With that said I'm super excited for Neir.

After watching what they are capable of with Neir2.. i have a feeling they don't want to make Scalebound anymore =/

They have plenty of great ideas on how to make a game interesting. This seems to something very outside of what they really want to do. That boss battle looked very underwhelming, even so with the expression Kiyama gave everyone there...

Please ignite a fire and pour some of that creative juice into Scalebound. Almost would like to ask to change the look of the main character a little.

That's what I'm saying.

After watching these Nier2 videos I really have to question what's going with this game. Gameplay seems soulless in comparison.

And I'm someone who enjoyed the presentation somewhat.

Kamiya was playing.

Kamiya was playing.

Was hoping they were showing footage of one of other people on stage, but yeah your right. Really hope there was an on floor demo and some people got their hands on to see if the combat had any more depth to it, cause compared to the Nier2 gameplay, Scalebound isn't looking so inspired.

I'm really bummed about this game. It just shows you that Kamiya's style is meant for a smaller more directed world. Plus it's trying to be MH. 😕

I actually hope they delay it to holiday 2017 tbh... their full potential of making an awesome game appears to be removed from Scalebound :(

The presentation was nice for co-op. All 4 pairing up to take down one huge boss in a water arena. The boss had some dynamic but it felt a bit too easy for them to take him down. Mainly because it was "shoot the core/weakpoint" Almost reminded me a bit of Lost Planet bosses.... and that isn't a good thing lol

The reactions to Scalebound remind me of how people thought of Wonderful 101 too, and I ended up loving that game. I think people are watching these expecting DMC combos and melee action when it is not that type of game. When Kamiya came around to Twitch's stream near the end of the show he made an effort to point out his Okami shirt and how he has made other types of games that the character action games most people know him for. I think Scalebound is this same type of thing.

I don't expect it to be another DMC or Bayonetta or even W101. I expect it to be something new that doesn't really fit into other styles like how W101 didn't, and I also expect it to have a ton of depth that we just can't see from these short demos.

You should take a read at this interview with kamiya

http://www.ign.com/articles/2016/06/17/an-update-on-scalebound-with-director-hideki-kamiya

"What we premiered today was obviously five minutes, right? A boss fight obviously isn’t a five minute experience. That’s something that we made for E3 to show you what something at that scale is like, but when we get into the actual game and you get that controller in your hands, and you’ve been playing for the few hours that it’s going to take to get to that boss -- and there’s stuff in that boss fight that we haven’t shown yet -- it’s going to be even more epic and even more crazy than what we showed today."

Yea, the showing of this game was one of the more disappointing things for me at E3. I expected so much more, like game of the show levels of amazing.

I understand that it's an RPG, so obviously there's more, and not everything was even showcased in this specific boss battle according to Kamiya, but this game in action has to look much, much better than this. A good deal of the excitement I had for the game is being effectively sapped away by what I'm seeing. I'm very happy it's delayed because it most certainly needs more time to develop.

Anyone else just going to play this by themselves??? Screw co op.

No co-op for me. Going it alone.

What continues to give me hope is this video above. There are rough spots, but there are clearly flashes of the potential this game has. I just hope they can make it happen and truly make this game something special. Once upon a time it was wishful thinking to see games like this, from a japanese developer such as Platinum Games, coming to PC. There's a major gap or desire that Microsoft and Platinum can fill if this game comes together right.

I was super pumped when they said it'll be coming to PC. I absolutely love platinum games and was initially bummed with the Scalebound announcement since I don't own an Xbone. Then I saw the gameplay.

Even Kamiya looked liked like he created a mistake.

Yep those were some pretty terrible animations, especially the bows. Not platinum like at all.

I think this and the FFXV titan demo were probably the worse things at e3 lol

I can't even tell whats going on in the Boss video. Yeah you're attacking a giant monster and dealing dmg but the UI in a total alpha state when it should at least be more clean looking. It looks like its going to be an RPG in the same way Darksiders 2 had RPG elements.

I think the game would be more interesting if it made better use of color and the protaganist wasn't so dreadfully unlikable. It's like the worst of both Japanese and Western Gaming design crutches.
