Very LTTP - The Playstation Vita

Oh wow, I am mad at myself for waiting so long to get this thing.

So, while watching E3 with a friend of mine from out of town, I messed with his Vita a bit and really loved how it felt. Remembering that I have a bunch of Plus games stocked up, I decided it was finally time to pull the trigger on this purchase.

Because I totally was in "want it now!" mode, I went to Target, Walmart, and my closest Gamestop, but ALL were out, perhaps permanently. I checked Best Buy online, no stores within 250 miles (I'm in San Diego) had a Vita in stock. Finally, I found a Gamestop that had a single unit left and put it on hold, buying it later that night. I also ordered a 32gb memory card from Amazon (why are those things still so expensive?!).

Perhaps it should have been a red flag that almost no one is carrying the system any more, but honestly, even if no other game ever came out on it, I think I'd still get my money's worth based on the existing library and PSP/PSone games.

I already love this thing, and I have so much to play on it. I started with Killzone Mercenary, which actually underwhelmed me. The graphics were fantastic and all, but I think an FPS on Vita is kind of missing the point. I'll get to Gravity Rush and Golden Abyss soon, also have Hotline Miami, Velocity 2x, Lumines, and more. Super stoked!

Let me know what recommendations you have for a new Vita owner. You can leave out the obvious stuff that already frequents "Top 25" lists, let me know about lesser-known gems. Thanks! :-)

I have no regrets getting my Vita, and it's getting an alright level of software support to me. I never expected the "AAA gaming in a handheld" nonsense that Sony tried to sell it as at first.

You should already have Rogue Legacy and Guacamelee if you've been a plus member for a long time. Both of these games are absolutely outstanding on Vita and by far the best way to experience both of them.

Freedom Wars is good too.

I actually also enjoyed Resistance Burning Skies for what it was but I went in with very low expectations...

I hope you like Japanese games because they are the bulk of the system's library.

I do actually! Not to a fanatical degree, but I really liked Shin Megami Tensei IV on 3DS (my first Atlus game) so Persona 4 Golden is on my list for sure.

Basically, I bought this for:

1. Great place to play indies. For whatever reason, I can't do most indies on console, I just feel like I should be playing a "console experience" on Ps4. With handhelds though this admittedly stupid mental block doesn't exist.

2. The small handful of AAA titles that came out before Sony gave up on it.

3. JRPGS

4. PSone/PSP classics.

It's a really good handheld. Play Velocity 2X on it and use the touch screen for teleporting. That's my favourite game on the system.

Is Spelunky on the Top 25 lists? Because if it's not it should be. There is no better Spelunky experience than on the Vita, it's an outstanding portable port.

Welcome to the family! We hang out here:

Not sure if it's in those top 25 lists you mentioned, but I'm playing through Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel right now, and it's a blast. Other games I can recommend are: Muramasa Rebirth, Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir, Grand Kingdom, Dragon's Crown, Steins;Gate, and of course Persona 4 Golden (this one is #1 in more or less all lists so, you're probably aware of it already).

Also, pretty much all PSP, PSX, and indie games play and look their best on Vita so, you're covered.

Have you played many PC indies? There are loads of great ones also available for the Vita, the portability makes it my favourite machine for them.

It's amazing if you like indies and Japanese games - with that said, there are a few AAA titles from early on that are incredible like Killzone, Wipeout 2048, Need For Speed Most Wanted and Tearaway to name a few.

You bought the 32gb off amazon? Ouch..

Anyways i recommend Superbeat Xonic which is currently $12 on PSN if you have Plus. Great rhythm game.

Persona 4 Golden obviously.

I like Spelunky and Hotline Miami as well.

I spend much of my time playing Street Fighter x Tekken.

Lastly I recommend Dragon's Crown and Muramasa.

Despite not many new games coming out it's still worth it for the library it already has, and even more as a system to play classic PS1 and PSP games.

Also, do not sleep on remote play. Blew my mind the first time I played my PS4 through my Vita during a vacation where my console was on the east coast but my Vita was with me on the west coast.

I was like, "Holy crap I'm living in the future".

Remote play is also good for times when I want to play PS4, but feel guilty for letting my wife go to bed alone. I just bring the Vita and play Fallout 4 in bed.

$55, the ones I saw in store were more. Maybe I shoulda done more bargain hunting though, you're right.

For the life of me I can't figure out why Sony did the proprietary bullshit. 3 years ago I had to choose between a 3DS and a Vita, and I went with 3DS partially because I was disgusted to discover the Vita's ugly hidden cost with the memory cards. Did they not understand this almost assuredly was hurting sales? I thought for sure they'd switch away from this practice with Vita slim, but no dice.

I've already tried it and it is super cool!

Unfortunately, I despise few things more than touch screen buttons. Having four of the Ps4's buttons relegated to the touch screen on Vita will probably kill the experience for me, though I'm open to trying to get used to it.

But if I need L3 to sprint or something, the touch screen setup just doesn't seem ideal.

This is just not true, there are so many amazing indie games.

Indie games that a lot of people already played on PC or another platform several years ago.

I'm glad they're on the platform for those that care, but I don't consider games like Bastion, a 2011 Xbox Live Arcade release, to be a reason to own a PS Vita.

It's not good for action games, but it's good for others. For instance I played through all of Life is Strange, Tales from the Borderlands and The Vanishing of Ethan Carter in bed on my Vita.

Also certain games have customized Vita controls like Fallout.

A lot of things I wanted to recommend were already mentioned, but here a few that weren't:

Demon Gaze
Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth
Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines
Virtue's Last Reward
Steins;Gate
Soul Sacrifice Delta

Definitely check out the Vanillaware games. Muramasa: Rebirth and Dragon's Crown are both exceptional games, and Muramasa has some great DLC. Danganronpa series is also worth getting, even Another Episode (don't listen to the hate).

Welcome to the club of forever resenting sony and their god damned memory cards.

Awesome system though, if only to have a boss collection of all your favorite psx and psp games.

Vita is great. Probably bought more games for it than any other system.....but I got my for free soooooo

really hard system to randomly recommend but certain people would absolutely love it.

Persona 4 Golden obviously.

I like Spelunky and Hotline Miami as well.

I spend much of my time playing Street Fighter x Tekken.

Definitely Muramasa: Rebirth. Had a blast with that game. Excellent combat, exploration, role playing.

The vita is fantastic! I love mine. Currently playing Dragons crown and gravity rush. Make sure you get p4golden and the danganronpa series!

I've had my Vita since launch and I'll never let it go.

That being said, if you're into ARPG's, get Odin Sphere Lfdisher (sic) and enjoy yourself.

Also, Grand Kingdom is coming in 10 days. Get that, too.

That's fine, but to someone who likes portable gaming it's a great library to have on a portable device. Not sure why you mentioned Bastion either, there are literally dozens of other great games, some that released first on Vita (more recently, Severed).

If you like good indie games you should get:

Downwell
Rogue Legacy
La Mulana ex
Axiom Verge
Binding of Isaac
Nuclear Throne
Super Meat Boy
Luftrausers
+
Resogun
Geometry Wars 2

I wonder if the fact that Sony is almost certainly not going to make another portable actually HELPS current Vita owners, and latecomers like me.

We obviously won't be getting any more big budget games, but I keep hearing about the system still getting a steady stream of indies and jrpgs, hopefully this continues for years. Apparently, though there are few vita owners, they buy a lot of games making the system profitable if you can keep your game within the right budget.

Danganronpa.

Danganronpa.

Danganronpa.

Danganronpa.

Fucking Danganronpa.

I keep hearing this, but I've heard it's not really a game. That's not a deal breaker to me if it's like a Japanese take on Telltale or something, is that what it is?

Of course it's a bloody game.

And a fantastic one at that.

The best I could describe it is a brilliant adventure game with a dark and insane sense of humour with superbly written characters that plays half in first person and the other half is a mix of phoenix wright and the most kick ass tense ass shit you've ever encountered bro. Fuck just play it

- Bought a Vita.
- Played Uncharted GA, Soul Sacrifice, Danganronpa 1,2 and Persona 4 Golden.
- Sold my Vita.

0 regreets.

You will.

And the people that are saying that it only has indie games and JRPGs aren't giving the library enough credit; while those games make up the bulk of the recent output, the system has seen a lot of love from games of all sizes and genres since it launched four years ago. You can get a lot of variety in your library if you look hard enough.

My deepest recommendation goes to Littlebigplanet Vita, which is, IMO, the best Littlebigplanet game.
