Mighty No. 9 review thread

*sigh*

So I guess I'm the only one that still wants to play this? Well, whatever. I've already enjoyed it for what it is and I still will.

Good gosh.

Anyway, I honestly thought this result would've stung a lot more than it did. I think I'm just over it at this point. The indie market is so good right now that it's hard to feel like I'm missing anything.

I'm there with you. My hype has deflated but I'm sure I'll enjoy it. I paid $20 for it two years ago so it's like a free game to me at this point.

Did higher than I thought based on the backlash, I expected 40 metacritic.

But these are still not good reviews and it's a shame really, I will still play it but I won't get my hypes up high, and to think, I was genuinely hyped for this game years ago.

You can talk shit about Infafune, but Inticreates is a solid developer. I wonder where did they all go wrong. Seems like most reviewers agree that it plays decently but harp on the thing not having its own identity and basically looking bland as fuck.

This is my issue. Inti knows what they are doing. Did they just get out of the way and let Inafune fuck himself here? I don't really get it. So much talent wasted on this project, about all I'm hoping for is a decent soundtrack.

On the bright side, this won't be the first game I've dumped $60 on to only play through once.

This. From what i've heard, the soundtrack is decent. If you like the stuff from Megaman X5 or Battle Network Transmission, you should like this. The graphics could've been alot better, instead of just looking like a high quality DC game, but the gameplay (from the beta demo anyway) was good / controls responsive with lots of evasive moves.

Also how'd Sonic 4 getting an 8.0 is still something I cant understand compared to this.

The quality of the developer doesn't really matter when you have higher ups calling bad shots. Lords of Shadow 2 was a significant step down from the first one because Alvarez was forcing the devs to do stupid shit like rat stealth segments which is something that makes sense as you're playing as Count fucking Dracula right

I imagine it could be a situation like that, but that's admittedly conjecture. Who knows.

What is wrong with it? I mean sure, some fault lies with the developers, but what Kickstarter does is move the responsibility and risk of financially supporting a project to the backers. That's not a "fault", that's what it's designed to do. And as such, the ones ultimately responsible for how we spent our money are us, the backers.

Blaming the funding platform is just silly. Blaming the developers exclusively is comforting, but not really accurate.
I think the more reasonable among backers already expected this and so aren't surprised to hear that a game they backed didn't turn out to be great or, in some cases, even good.

I also suspect the people who will be most vocal aren't those who expected that risks come with sometimes not receiving any real rewards. The people who are most vocal tend to be those who have a kind of blind faith approach (believing that no matter what happens it will turn out well) which is what has led to the glut of so many Kickstarters playing on nostalgia rather than selling things like mechanics or worlds.

Unsure if I like that as it stifles the creative endeavor, limiting it to things other people already did, but it's also sadly pretty expected.

I love the soundtrack it's really good. Anyone interested in hearing the soundtrack can hear it here on Youtube.

So only specially qualified reviewers who are Mega Man experts can write proper reviews for this game? Is this your thinking?

No, my thinking is that reviewers sometimes unfairly pile on a game that's gotten some bad press leading up to its release. Even more so when it's kind of a niche title to begin with. I'm not saying that's definitely the case here, but it might be.

What's the 8-4 podcast crew saying about this game? Haven't listened to the podcast in 2 years or so but I still remember all their hype and about being involved in the project.

I guess keeping silent is their only option ;P

Radio silent. They've been distancing themselves from it for awhile and haven't mentioned it in a long time.

How is Mega Man a niche title? And again, all of the people who aren't brainwashed media reviewers think it's bad too.

This is, kind of sad. Obviously there was talent in the studio/creator, I think they just bnit off far too much for what they could chew, and the game suffered as a result.

Why do I get the feeling this is another industry pile-on of negativity? Some of the remarks in these reviews are absurd -- the reasoning for why the game deserves a low score.

Will this be the lowest score Kickstarter game in existence? As a backer, It is saddening to see the reviews. But, I rarely take review scores as a serious measure of a game. It is always best to play for yourself and make judgments based on that, when possible. This game looks like a turd, but who knows, maybe it will be a classic return to form to the MM series.

the game has terrible art direction. It's utterly passionless and lacks any coherent vision. That alone is a dealbreaker. Something like this shouldn't come out of a $4 million dollar game.

$4 million.

contrast that against this $50,000 game

Which looks far better, has a much more coherent style and concept, and plays well (I've played it). It has a creative spark. MN09 doesn't.

It deserves all the criticism we can heap onto it.

Ouch. MN9 never looked promising to me. That 20XX game in Steam Early Access looks far more interesting.

if bloodstained turns out the same, I got no more hope left in the world.

I'm not worried about Bloodstained. (Or Yooka-Laylee.) Got a good feeling that both games will turn out great.

Honestly, the game just looks unfinished. From all the footage I've seen, it is deserving of the mediocre scores it is getting.

I backed this as a Screw Capcom thing.. Something I probably wouldn't do if it wasn't 2013.

At least I'm getting it for free so i might as well play it, but yeah, I expected better after the actually-pretty-fun Gunvolt. Yikes.

$60 for me.
My first Kickstarter flop.

"But it's INAFUNE, the creator of MEGAMAN. It can't turn out bad"
Unfortunately, that "title" is something he's been suckering people with for a long time. Nobody can blame you for buying into it though, "Fuck Capcom" sentiment was at an all-time high, and the actual Kickstarter pitch looked significantly more inspiring than the finished game. It's only really in hindsight that backing Mighty No 9 has turned out to be as big of a mistake as it is.

But ultimately, Kickstarter is always going to be a risk of some kind. Even if the team is great and the pitch is cohesive and solid. Everybody takes a loss at some point. Mine was Republique, but I don't particularly have any hard feelings over it, and have since Kickstarted a handful of other games that I feel more confident in.

Hollow Knight looks like it'll be a great game, but it ain't a $50k game just because that's roughly what it's kickstarter raised. For that matter, our knowledge of how much MN9 cost is limited as well, short of the developer actually coming out and telling us.

Many tiny indie projects look like they cost next to nothing to develop, because the developers are working for free in the hopes of royalties once the game is done. From the look of it, Hollow Knight has 3 people working on it and it's been under development for at least 2 years. If we use the simple $10k/person/month formula for estimating approximate "real" game development costs, that comes out to about $720k... and the game isn't done yet.
