Watched a full review. This shit looks extremely mid. Open world and very little pressure. The Master Levels on Eternal were masterfully construced. Every room thoughtfully laid out. Every enemy had a purpose. This look like Doom Halo or some shit. There's a giant mode where you fight a big lumbering enemy and break stuff, just like we always asked for. VERY arcadey presentation. Multicolor enemy outlines, neon icons popping out everywhere. This is maybe the worst part for me. Looks like they hired the Tony Hawk Pro Skater HUD team or something. Weapons don't look lethal. Enemies very spongey.

Boys if they fucked this up because of the people who thought Eternal was too hard, we lost a great one. I had no idea that we had to be legit concerned about this one. Can't have shit in this hobby I guess.

Someone needs to put together a list of very GAF account who counter signaled Doom Eternal's game design. We've reached a point where we really need to make lists.

Another fellow disappointed in the change of direction. You are not alone my man.

People like to shit on Eternal but to me it is one of the best FPS games ever. Sure it has it's flaws like the platforming and the purple goo, but once you are in the action (which is 95% of the time) the game is just pure joy. Not just great music and graphics, but some of the most exhilarating action I've seen in a game, with constant threats coming from everywhere and enemies that are just relentless.

Meanwhile when I watch gameplay of the new one, it's all big areas with no threat whatsoever, slow projectiles and enemies that know how to stand but don't seem to know how to fight.

Hopefully all that shit can be tuned and make the game actually as challenging and fast as Eternal but yeah, I doubt it.

To me it seems this is more tailored towards console play. There is much less need of twitch and precision aiming. There is no way TDA is going to beat the previous 2 games. The open zones do slow down the pacing and they do hold upgrades. The mech and dragon look like boring evade and attack. And there is a huge focus on melee and parry, from range you can't really hurt them and from close up they do the same over and over.

Eternal is, bar the floor is lava and goo gimmicks and the stingy reserve ammo limit, the best Doom game ever made. Once I learnt it, which was when I revisisted it after a year, it clicked and its one of those games that can put you in the zone. It really is the DMC of FPS.

Why can't we have a Heretic or Hexen game? It has the aesthetic and it's something new.
Doom brand sells and Heretic and Hexen do not. Sadly.

SkylineRKR SkylineRKR Dark Ages based on the Mech, the Dragon, the focus on Block/Parry is suffering from an identity problem and the color coded bullets and visual cues that tell you what to do instead of reacting to it. And on a artistic level makes it more cartoony instead of dark and gritty.

I agree with what someone said days ago. They created open areas but focus heavily on keeping close for Parry...so you always feel like you are fighting in a hallway anyway. Very conflicting design choices.

I guess we find out when we play it ourselves. IMO it's not needed to set off the alarm right now. To me it looks good.
Maybe it has it's own rythm not like Eternal but something appealing also.

They didn't mean that much to people back in the day either

The Heretic and Hexen games never sold that many copies
Heretic was produced by John Romero a year after DOOM, and the same with Hexen just a few years later.

I was too young back then but come on, I bet that meant something to people back then.

I will, but i wanted this to be better than Eternal ,it's not. It's a little below it.
I meant, are you playing this right now?

Better than Eternal is … dunno, how do you propose they do it? At best they can match it, IMO.

I do want to see if this has same quality as Eternal, that gameplay loop.

I think this might be the last Doom game with a AAA budget ever. Try supporting it even if the game ain't as good as the previous 2.

I just feel no excitement for this game. Which is weird because I love shooters and love doom. Was already a bit burned out by eternal. The reinvention they are doing here also doing massively do it for me.

I will play because I have gamepass and it's goated but not hyped at all. Hopefully it surprises me.

Guys i have a question.
If i buy the Doom: The Dark Ages Premium Upgrade for 32 bucks i will get the Advanced Access on the 13th on Gamepass, right?

Cool, thank you.
I'm playing with the idea to get the Advanced Access but i'm not sure if it's worth it.
Anyone here with Advanced Access?
not worth it, early access is just 2 days in this case,
you'd be basically buying a premium pack for a game, you'll lose access to, the moment your sub runs out.
if you are on pc, its launching without path tracing too, which makes "early access" even more of a joke.

I'm in the Eternal camp being better, but I think a lot of people who liked 2016 are still not going to like this because there is still management mechanics. 2016 camp still won't like it unless it's just more Doom 2016.

I have picked up the upgrade.

It includes first DLC. Plus art book, soundtrack. Which is why I bought it.

Early access is just 2 days, not sure if that justifies it.

I like the Meathook in Eternal.

Comparison between the 3 has me rank them Eternal > 2016 > Dark Ages if we consider speed and fun factor.

5 minutes in, blurg. How exactly is this Doom? Doom 3 got slammed when it launched for being so far gone from Doom. That's why people enjoyed 2016. This game doesn't look anything like Doom. It looks like some cheap mod for Doom 2016.

Gameplay wise there is a way to play it that does sound fun, see the review Buggy Loop Buggy Loop showed before, focused on parrying and aggressive gameplay. Not sure if it can carry the whole game, but this one does have its preferred way to be played.

Given the effort in remastering all DOOM games (I hope DOOM 3 by Nightdive is next) and this included remastering DOOM I&II twice (first with a Unity port and then with the custom KEX engine by Nightdive) and bringing DOOM 64 on the same Nightdive glorious care, they must know people have a good idea of what these games are (btw, running super clean and at 120 Hz)…

The art direction though… it is really full of garish colors popping everywhere including the bright bluish trail left by the shield… way way too much garish and bright colours everywhere.

The developers added an option to increase the speed of the game and how fast the bullets or attacks from enemies can be, this means that most probably players will be able replicate Doom Eternal speed and intensity. That's why they added this option for those who enjoyed the intensity of that game.

I think people should try these options first instead of being disappointed by watching footage online

I personally enjoyed very much Doom Eternal but I am gonna be honest, sometimes it was too stressful to managing all these demons at one and the constant change of weapons. Something a bit more relaxed is good in my book

Im one of the few here who has defended Eternal and considers it one of the best games ever made. That shit on Nightmare is one of the most satisfying experiences I've ever had along-side Sekiro. BOth games excel at giving you incredible satisfaction once you defeat the enemies. That being said, I did get Dark Ages from fanatical cuz it's less than 60 euros and I have my doubts about its design as well, however it looks like instead of arena it's now more in line with Serious Sam type of shooters. We'll see how it stacks.

It remains to be seen how balanced the game will be at that speed. For all intents and purposes the level design and the movement options to the player character were fine tuned to that speed.

The balanced by devs mode and the one they polished the most will likely be the default settings, but if the devs come out and say that the fastest settings are the default and the normal one is just that slowed down then fine I was wrong ;).

gamerant said the main campaign is 12-15 hours while other places say it's 25. A 25 hour DOOM campaign doesn't sound right.

I'm waiting for it to preload on PSN. I can't see paying more for 2 days. At least we don't have to deal with another switch port DOOM. Eternal looked like 💩 on the Switch. If it does release on Switch 2, it probably has a fighting chance of running better.

After watching a few reviews....
So the gameloop is a simplification and downgrade to Eternal, the OST falls massively short to what Gordon did, the story is for 10 year olds and MS is pulling off "gamecards" with their physical release....

yeah, this isn`t even worth using that gamepass freebie I still have lying around....

I wonder if this'll end up being the opposite of what id wanted to do. A game that would satisfy both fans of 2016 and Eternal. The Eternal fans will say it's too slow and the systems are too basic and the 2016 fans will moan about whatever they think the best thing is being absent.

Nonetheless, I'm in for the premium edition so will be on it ASAP. (If my work schedule keeps up, I probably won't get to play it until the weekend. So that'll be money well spent).

Yes it can for sure be played mostly that way and probably was my favorite way to play. Though I would say preferred would reference case the player and not the reflection of what the developers have set up or anything like that.
Also the speed settings as someone mentioned and I talked about earlier can change it to feel pretty dramatically different depending on the mix. A nice difficulty spectrum is great, adjusting this much wasn't in my cards for liking either.

Eternal is way too stressful. Its like 2016 with a mod for super skilled players who only play Doom and nothing else. For most players people Eternal was way too much, myself included. It has some great moments where you can also enjoy the game, but I was relieved when it was over.
