Saw it. It's really dumb with some cringeworthy scenes, the main guy is just pure eyecandy like Rico in Starship Troopers but more wooden. I couldn't hate it either, though. In fact, it made me ashamed to feel that I sort of liked it. The plot is really un-hollywoody in some ways, I guess it sorta reads like a Baen military scifi novel. The ending sequel bait was really something. Bring on part 3 with that premise, please!

Just finished watching, posting on my phone.

If you like the first movie you'll like this one, and I do. Really enjoyable film that keeps the pacing great. The whole story really feels well-put without putting holes in the first. And I expected the hollywood rehash plot but they actually surprised me!

About Boomer.
He doesn't even get a mention but I think he's in a family photo.

There's more to it than that. When the movie was being made and needed to be marketed, there was one little problem. Another movie from another studio was already called Independence Day. To get around that, the filmmakers opted to go with ID4 (ID for Independence, 4 for the 4th of July). Eventually, they got permission to use the full name, but the ID4 thing stuck. I think they talk about this during the new retrospective on the new Blu-Ray.
 
Twenty years ago I was downloading all the trailers and teasers I could for the original. I was obsessed.

My only gripe in the film really is
Liam Hemsworth
in a legacy sense.
He has no connection to the past unlike the other characters. They should've made one of the Russell kids instead.

Currently the first in a theater for a double feature of the original Independence Day, and the sequel. I'm the first here with 30 minutes to go before show time.

This won't bode well for any future installment.

The funny thing is that the first movie is way more emotional than it has any right to be. Compare it to something like Transformers, which has no emotion and shitty characters. The cast of the first movie is very likable and it actually sets aside time to them. You care about them in the first movie because there's plenty of humanity which contributes to the stakes.

I'm not saying it's some kind of poignant thing, but the first movie is very centered on its characters and emotional value and that's kind of bizarre for a big dumb spectacle. The relationship between David and Connie is really sweet for example, and "is mommy sleeping now?" is just... fuck off that shit is sad lol
 
I dunno. I mean, I like that ID4 set some time for its characters, but I feel like it's mostly one-note. Like the foundation or basic steps in their arcs are there, but nothing real meaty beyond it.

It's still better than anything Emmerich did after it, though (minus The Patriot).
 
Right, as I said it isn't anything poignant, but it's there and doesn't feel like it doesn't give a shit about its characters unlike most things along these lines.
 
Movie pretty much can't fail in my eyes. I expect all of the complaints about part 1 to apply to this one.

Anyway, I watched the extended version (got the Blu-ray in the mail last week, the new one with the longer cut) and every new scene apart from when Spiner is showing them the cockpit of the ship when they first get to Area 51 is fucking terrible.

Just came back from it. Aside from the first 30mins, this was a massive disappointment. The comic book seemed to have a more coherent, richer story.
 
The way I'm approaching this is as a two-parter. I recall when it used to be titled Independence Day Forever Part 1 and 2 and all things point to this having a sort of cliffhanger ending. Hopefully if I find this one on the weak end of the deal that the third movie will round it all out.

In an interview with Empire magazine, director Emmerich revealed that a third film would be made depending on the success of the second one. He also said that audiences wouldn't have to wait as long as they did for the second in the series. According to the director, the third film will be an intergalactic journey and it'll be set maybe a year or two later since he wants to maintain the group of people, especially the young characters.

If we have of case of Transformers Age of Extinction, where the film was a commercial success, but was overall panned by the critics, then a 3rd sequel to ID might happen

Just finished watching the original ID4 on the big screen. Theatre is barely 10% full. Doesn't bode well for Resurgence's box office prospects this weekend.
 
Really, you need to enjoy the first film to grab onto ID4R. The importance of some of the characters are carried from the first film, which is actually pretty great since sequels rarely do that (usually only reserved for main cast rather than an ensemble)

Yeah. In fact watching the first film directly before this one helped my enjoyment immensely. Was cool seeing the threads carried over and an expansion to the universe. The pacing wasn't that bad either.

Local theatre ran a double feature screening of both Independence Day films back to back. They also gave out lanyards and pins and stuff.

The new movie was fine. Pretty much everything I wanted out of a new ID4 flick. It helped watching the first film beforehand as it didn't color my expectations due to nostalgia goggles. That said, the original is still clearly better and Hemsworth can't act at all. I get the impression some footage was left on the cutting room floor that would have added context to the muddle that was the plot.

Thing is, it doesn't matter whether this film was good or whether it was bad. I think it's been failed by marketing so I'm expecting a mega bomb given its $165 million budget. Doubt we ever get a sequel.

Some easter eggs for those of you watching this weekend... you'll see the name of Russell Casse (Randy Quaid's character in the first film) on the memorial wall featured at the start of the movie in Washington. The hospital where Jasmine Hiller works is named after the late first lady from the first flick (Marilyn Whitmore).

Where the president says "you're screwing with the wrong species"
, which was in the trailers. Was that deleted?
