Steam Summer Sale 2016: Hidden Gems & Deals

Both games are action RPGs with more emphasis on the action than RPG. There's levels, equipment, some sidequests (in Felghana, not Origin) but it's mostly hacking and slashing. Great music, solid platforming (which is unfortunately missing in more recent games), tough boss battles.

Would absolutely recommend both Origin or Oath in Felghana. Can't go wrong starting with either, they fundamentally similar games using the same engine, but have some pretty substantial differences. Felghana has an "overworld" that connects the dungeons and a town hub, Origin takes place entirely in a huge tower so it's constant dungeon crawling. Origin is shorter, but has three different playable characters with different playstyles, with their own takes on the story and some of the bosses are different between.

So kind of like ALTTP and Alundra?

Slightly OT< but is there a way to browse for bundles on Steam? You list some, but when I do a keyword search for bundle, it gives me only a few (mostly casual games) and then a bunch of seemingly random games

Is it worth paying fine extra cash for the DE of Dishonored?

Yup, the campaign DLC is really good (you get 2 more campaigns with a different protagonist, won't say more because it'd spoil things)

Some obvious recommendations..

Highly recommended undertale, the game is one of the best games I've ever played. The story is great, the music is fantastic, and all the twists and turns it throws you in make for an incredibly memorable game. If you're fortunate enough to not know anything about this game then download it and play immediately. The game really benefits from not knowing it's main mechanics.

Dark souls 1: I've been playing this game for the last few months and it is fantastic. I now understand the hype! Amazing game!

Black Mesa: if you've never played a half life game then I don't recommend it, for fear that you get hooked and have to suffer with the rest of us in the endless hell that is waiting for half life 3.

If you're already cursed, then give this one a go!

Another vote to Recettear. Capitalism Ho!

For people who are interested in visual novels, I also recommend If My Heart had Wings. There is a catch though, the Steam version is quite censored. There is a restoration patch though.

I am shocked no one put Wolfenstein The New Order, much like The Evil Within this got a permanent price drop from $60 to $20.

It's now on sale for $9.99 and so is The Old Blood which I also recommend

I'm gonna have to give a shoutout to endless legend: Great fantasy 4x by amplitude that filled in the gaping black hole of disappointment that Beyond Earth left for me. Has a variety of races with greatly different gameplay styles that each of their own individual questlines. Has enough in common with Civ that anyone who has played V can pick it up no problem.

Currently $10.19(-66%)
$25 with all the DLC(which, with one or two exceptions is also great)

Ikaruga - $4.99 (50% off)
Most people here probably know what Ikaruga is but shmups were never big on PC and Ikaruga is absolutely a great shmup. It gets hard as hell later on though so keep that in mind.

A lot of these are going to be listed in the OP already, so I won't link the store page for those, but WHATEVS

Recommendations:

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition
You know what the fuck this is. Unforgiving but almost always fair, it's an absolute classic action RPG.

Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin
The base game is only slightly worse than Dark Souls (better in some ways, worse than others), and Scholar of the First Sin is a remixed version that includes all of the fantastic DLC.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light - $2.49 (-75%)
An isometric co-op adventure masterpiece. One of the best games ever to star this iconic character.

More to come later maybe

How anime is this? I've been interested in this game for a while, but I don't want it if it's too anime.

If you skipped all cutscenes, the game is still super deep and amazing, plus it includes all the DLC at $5.

I happen to like the story - it's lighthearted, charming, and besides appearance not all all anime-y.

I can't believe the DLC for the non-Scholar version isn't on sale. Christ.

I'll second this. TNO is one of the best surprises of the last decade.

SOMA

In terms of games, SOMA provides a pretty much unique experience. There is simply no other game that affected me as much. The atmosphere too is almost unrivalled. I don't see a need to say much more, if you are looking for a serious, dark, philosophical experience, just get it.

The monster encounters are the weakest parts of the game. I'm not sure if removing them completely would be the best solution, but there should at least be fewer of them. However, if you do not like horror games, there is a mod to stop the monsters from attacking.

I'd like to recommend

Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition

SOMA

and

the Stalker Bundle

For these prices you'd be a fool not to give em a shot.

I can't believe the DLC for the non-Scholar version isn't on sale. Christ.

The non-Scholar base game isn't on sale either. They really want you on SotFS, I guess. It's ten bucks to upgrade.

Hexcells Complete Pack - $2.69 (70% off)
Series of puzzle games that mash together elements of Minesweeper and Picross. Nice ramp up in difficulty from game to game and Infinite has a random level generator.

Seconding the Hexcells recommendation

How anime is this? I've been interested in this game for a while, but I don't want it if it's too anime.

I wouldn't say that it lets itself get bogged down in anime tropes very much. They're there sometimes, but they aren't annoying.

I actually think the game portrays its characters a lot better/more-believably than most anime-influenced games do, honestly.

Alright, I bought it but Jesus Christ it better not be too anime.

Anyone know any good coop or multiplayer games? Open world would be a plus
GTA Online is terrible

Monaco, it's a fantastic coop heist game. It's not open world, but it's a steal (pun intended) at $2.09.

header.jpg

Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine is a single player or co-op heist game. Assemble a crack team of thieves, case the joint, and pull off the perfect heist.

Seconding the following:

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition

One of the best games of all time, period.

Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin

While not quite as good as the first, this game focuses slightly more on stats over skill in the early game, which some players may prefer.

Dishonored + DLC

Both the main game and it's add-ons are phenomenal. A true successor to Thief.

The Evil Within

A flawed-but-fun successor to RE4. It'd be a truly great game with just a few less nonsensical story beats and instant death sequences. $10 is a very fair price.

I'd also throw out a small recommendation for Zeno Clash ($2) and Zeno Clash 2 ($3), dirt cheap first-person brawlers with good combat and an amazing surreal art style. The creature and character designs alone are worth the price of admission.

Is the division too expensive, it does seem that way. Will probably get blazblue and rainbow six not sure on the others

The Division is a mixbag honestly, the only way I got it was through a price error on Newegg and even then I felt like I was ripped off because other than the awesome setting it feels like every Ubisoft open world game.

People should play Grandia II whenever it is not just on Steam. It is an amazing game.

The battle system is acutally quite deep despite how it appears on the surface. Needing to worry about how your characters are positioned, as well as the the locations for AoEs and Magics in the Turn Order makes it feel really great when you get proficient at exploiting it =).

The game moddable (although I didn't do much when I played through it). And it doesn't wear out its welcome.

If you like the idea of creating level 987 creatures that can do millions of damage, Disgaea is your game.

I don't know why Atlus (I guess?) didn't just port

-Disgaea 2
-Disgaea 3
-Makai Kingdom
-La Pucelle Tactics
-Stella Deus

It seems like it would be a pretty easy port job. Phantom Brave is coming soon.

Interested but looks way daunting. Does your Civ V comment really stand?
