Here's how a TEASER to my IDEAL Berserk game would have been

The screen is black as you you hear the click clack of hooves trotting through mud. The black screen starts to fade out as the camera begins to pan down what looks to be a dead tree. As the camera continues to pan you see corpses hanging off its limbs. You finally see the band of mercenaries making their way past the tree. They pause as they see what seems to be a dead fetus fall out of its dead mother. A woman (Shisu) traveling with them picks up the stillborn baby. The leader (Gambino) proclaims that the baby is dead and for her to toss it aside . At that moment baby Guts starts crying. BAM!!! Cut to a black screen with red lettering saying BERSERK.

Miyazaki could have made that happen folks.

I feel it's kind of sick that Beserk features rape in the first place
Why? Is it taboo to depict rape in a seinen manga? The story of Berserk unfolds in a world where crude scenes are a normal occurrence; if those aren't of your taste, you should just keep away from this work.
I hope they don't tone down the dark themes of Berserk for the western audience, it wouldn't be fair to the manga fans, who love the series for what it is.

Never change Japan

Honestly though, do consider changing. I wonder how Miura feels/would feel about this...

They don't tone it down for the western audience. That's why Barnes and Nobles doesn't sell the manga in their stores anymore. They moved it to basically the pornographic side of the store, then took it out completely. I remember this so vividly even though it was a damn long time ago because I was pretty upset about it.. Amazon sells them cheaper anyway.

Miyazaki would've just gone fuckin' nuts with Berserk at his disposal. He could've just used the content from the pre-Golden Age part of the manga and made something kinda spectacular out of it. At least the sort of encounters that Miyazaki puts in the Souls games would make sense in the context of Berserk.

I'm slowly realizing that I actually hate this game's existence. This literally changed in the last two hours.

I really want to play a berserk game but I don't wanna support shit like this I'm real conflicted

I'm buying to support Berserk. Not stupid ass marketing moves by some out of touch suits. But at the same time I don't want the next Berserk game to follow suit. Hopefully the license goes to another company.

We've gotta be... what, 3 or so chapters away from a full tank? Vol. 38 will be real someday!

I hope with a new volume comes more reprints. I'm missing 29 and that's going for $90-$100 new and 40-50 used right now.

The fact they are so dead set on using the rape as titillation really shows they must have an INCREDIBLE contempt for their customers. Like how warped do you have to think your fanbase is that this is what you emphasize about a series as beloved and influential as Berserk?

I think they are only aiming people who don't know anything about it and just wanted to use naked ladies to attract the 13 year old audience to sell as many copies as possible.

Musou games always have a cavalcade of hotties as playable characters, but you really can't duplicate that with Berserk since at least during The Golden Age, there aren't that many notable female characters. Casca is basically it. Casca mostly wears a full set of armor, so how can they sex her up? I know, that time she was naked in a horrific scene that has been seared into our memories! THROW IT ON THE COVER BABY

They totally missed the point. They are basically trying to use the "sex sells" tactic for a franchise where numerous characters are victims of sexual abuse. It doesn't work.

Developer 1: What should our trailer for the new Berserk Musou game feature?
Developer 2: Uh, maybe Guts cuts through a hundred dudes?
Developer 1: No, I think I've got a better idea.

whats the issue with this again?
Its in the Berserk Manga.

It's from the scene when Gutts finally wakes up after he got mutilated and she got raped. This is when he first sees her... when he first discovers her mind is broken.... from the profound betrayal.

If you don't like it don't buy it. Problem solved :)

I'm getting tired of this kind of argument along with the "it won't be on the Western release" one. Do you think people criticize this solely because they don't want a depiction of exposed skin sully their pristine video game shelf or something?

Don't know shit about Berserk, but that's a little bit vile.

Yeah, what is this, anyways, a board for discussing video games?

Using references to rape as marketing for a game maybe warrants a bit more than 'vote with your wallet,' don't you think?

This is the same publisher that made a skimpy bikini costume associated with an implied rape scene in Fatal Frame 5 an unlockable alternate costume. Nintendo had to replace it with Nintendo themed costumes when they brought it outside of Japan.

Berserk deserves better than this. Shame on Koei Tecmo for fetishizing and selling a horrible rape scene.

Gross, but to be fair, it's not like the manga was the epitome of tastefulness in the first place. I'm sorry Berserk fans, having a beloved character graphically raped to show how dark the work is is a cheap shot (and an unoriginal one at that), not masterful storytelling.

I don't know if they're appealing to people who are aroused by PTSD or people who don't give a fuck about Berserk and just like titties on their preorders, but as much as I'm interested in this game, that marketing is awful.

Do we really need a topic about this ?
Take a guess, mister post #121.

Might not be original but Guts is easily one of the best developed characters in comics. Also the whole Casca rape is just an icing on a horrible cake that was the eclipse, so many likeable characters just got killed by the new antagonist.

For real, I just went back and read the entirety of the Eclipse.
I forgot how badass Judeau was. The Pippin one was the one that has always stuck in my mind, though.

I'll post again what I posted when people were complaining in the other thread.

Its strange to me that people are complaining about using the Caska rape scene in the marketing material.

It is THE pinnacle event in the series. The culmination of Griffith's betrayal, the death of the band of the hawk, the whole motivation behind Guts' quest for revenge.
Hell you could say that this injustice is what keeps the guy moving after he continually gets smashed and sliced to shit.

Its probably the most important plot moment in the whole series.

Holy shit, seriously? I had no idea volumes were out of print at this point... wow. And there's no official, digital release of it in English yet, either, right?

Yeah, which is why you don't market a game with "look how sexy this horrible thing is!"

Meh, I'm still getting the game for both PS4 and Vita.
I don't see the point of getting mad at optional and probably Japan only scantily clad DLC for a girl who had something bad happen in a comic book once. But that's just me. :-/

Do you feel the tone of the teaser trailer matched that moment?

Yeah, even Corkus and Gaston were memorable. I recently started reading it again after years since i heard that the new show was coming out, before i started reading it again i remember thinking that Griffin wasn't that bad, but seriously i can't wait for that dude to kick the bucket.

They're selling the game (cover and DLC) with the premise of Very Sexy Rape Time.

The marketing for this game is pretty fucking weird. That scene in the manga is horrifying and it's depicted as such.

Somehow it still doesn't surprise me that it's being marketed this way though.

From what i've read of Berserk so far based on recommendations, its uncomfortable how much rape is actually used in the manga, even outside of 'contextually powerful scenes' like mentally and physically breaking a previously competent and strong female character to the point of being comical. If it was just that and maybe a few more, it would be fine because it mattered to the base series and what it was trying to tell.

However, all manner of creature, and a certainly many situations devolve into nothing but that, and while i understand its the view of the world to be unforgiving...i can't separate certain scenes as little more than shock value.

With that being said however, Koei Temco have clearly used their promotional materials in a way that goes to another level for a game, and i think its in their best interest to actually acknowledge this as soon as possible, atleast give an official response to those concerned.

Yeah the whole marketing of this has been in pretty bad taste. I'm fine with he scene in the manga but it doesent seem to be what you should be focusing all your marketing on. Make me think the game is being made by people who aren't familiar with the story, which in turn makes me think it won't be very good.

Plus it's a fucking musou. Guts and friends fighting hordes of monsters is what they should be showing

Will still buy..... it's Berserk!!
but seriously i can't wait for that dude to kick the bucket.

I'm not sure we will see it in our lifetimes . Mabye our grandchildren after Miura transfers his mind into an AI to continue slowly working on it.

I feel like calling a rape scene "something bad that happened once" is kind of reductionist.

Horrifying or not, is it not at its core entertainment? Here lies the ambiguity.

Yeah. I think you can definitely have a good discussion about how its used in the manga as far as shock value goes, but there's still a big difference between that and how its being advertised here.

Yeah the whole marketing of this has been in pretty bad taste. I'm fine with he scene in the manga but it doesent seem to be what you should be focusing all your marketing on. I'd say it's just that the marketing team want to put a big focus on how this is there 'Over 17/18' musou game in the worst way possible.

I was fine with the teaser and I'm fine with the cover...but that costume is too much, yes.

Even something completely ridiculous, like an idol outfit, would've been preferable.
...Actually, that sounds fun.

I remember watching the first anime of Berserk not knowing anything about the manga, and being in complete shock the way it ended. I would say the marketing boils down to a company who specializes in commoditizing sexualized women, and are making due with what limitations the Berserk property has to offer regardless of how tasteful it is given the context.

Im pretty sure that is post-ritual Ciasca. If I remember correctly Gutts sees her like this in the cave where the blacksmith Andre and his granddughter live.
