I remember going to the theater, I think to see The Nice Guys, and the pre-show advertisement reel had alittle EPK reel for Roots, and then one for Free State of Jones. In that order.

I remember thinking "why in the fuck would I go watch Matthew McConaughey doing whatever the fuck it is he's doing here after that."

Seems like a whole lot of overconfidence backfiring on execs.

Which makes me wonder if they're going to stay in the batting cages trying to hit nothing but home runs, or if they're going to look at their slates the next few years and decide playing Billyball is a better idea.

It will be interesting to see if ID4R can outgross Warcraft worldwide. It's actually looking like Warcraft might have a bit of an edge in that competition.

Remember when Independence Day Resurgence was being put forth as a candidate for $1B this year? Fox and Emmerich + company screwed things up about as much as they could be screwed up on ID4R.

The most surreal part about my outing to IDR was that the three trailers were for Swiss Army Man, The Birth of a Nation and Hands of Stone. My friends and I looked at each other, wondering if we were seated in the wrong theater and we were about to see any other movie besides IDR. Or maybe the theater was making some kind of mocking meta-commentary: 'Here are movies where some effort was put into the plot, acting and structure of the film. This is what that looks like.'

Really saddened by ID4-2's performance, really wanted a third movie out of this but I guess I should just be happy that it got a sequel at all.

They own AMC as well.

ID4R managed to make $102M overseas this weekend. Only $37M of that was from China, so it must have done decently in some other territories. There are a few remaining European territories to launch in coming weeks, but we're probably looking at $300M or so overseas. Definitely this year's Terminator Genisys.
That's a pretty apt comparison; Genisys even opened to about the same weekend, at $42.5m, and finished with $89m. I see a similar < $100m finish for Resurgence in its future.

This may be the last week Zootopia charts. If so, salute.

Your only mistake Zootopia is you came out on blu ray.
I do wonder if Disney might have bumped the date back a few weeks had they realized how it was going to leg out, especially overseas (thanks, Japan). It could have come out around now in the US.

A month or so ago, when it was questionable whether Zootopia would top $1b (it all depended on Japan), we thought it would do so by the skin of its teeth. Now it's cleared it by $17m, and probably has another $2-3m in the tank. It's currently parked at #25 all time, globally. That'll do, bunny. That'll do.

There was a short conversation in the last box office thread about how effects these days don't seem to hold up because audiences these days don't want to believe like they used to and it got me thinking; does that apply to most aspects of film these days?

We live in an age of intense scrutiny, the age of Honest Trailers and Cinema Sins. I believe pretty much everyone has caught on to Hollywood's current game plan and it's starting to catch up to them.

All these recent bombs must be making WB feel better about BvS...now in their meetings they can be like hey at least it wasn't as bad as Warcraft or ID4R or Alice 2 or TMNT2...

Disappointed by ID4-R's performance but not really surprised. The advertising was constant but I didn't see it much of anywhere else. Seems like they went with a ton of youtube videos thinking that would capture a younger audience and it sort of fell flat on its face.

Dory's BO to everyone else

I'm tired the fuck out of talking animals. Remember loving Finding Nemo and just can't muster up the interest to see Dory.

Oh boy, you'll love the next couple of family films.

The problem with the younger audience method is that the original ID4 does't really hold up if you missed the boat. Someone who is 18 today would have maybe watched that film on TV for the first time within the past decade. Maybe never at all. Unlike Jurassic Park and its dinosaur hook, what's the point of watching ID4 in the past decade if you are growing up with the same shit in every film? I doubt anyone under 20 held this film's legacy in any more regard than they would 2012 or Day After Tomorrow.

Yeah, I do think that's a real issue. For me, this was a landmark film at the time. I was in high school and remember being obsessed with it pre-release. I didn't think it would blow up the charts critically but I loved it for what it was. It had a certain charm to it.

I never actually thought about that myself. The first movie was something new at the time in terms of the destruction and effects. Now though it seems like 90% of all action movies have a major city get destroyed by something from another world/supernatural.

To find out where "Welcome to Earf" came from.

as long as people love cute animals, there will be cute talking animals in kids movies

I just realized that half of the domestic Top 10 for the year so far has featured talking animals. Four of the other five featured Superheros. The remaining film is Ride Along 2.

1) Captain America: Civil War
2) Deadpool
3) The Jungle Book (2016)
4) Zootopia
5) Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
6) Finding Dory
7) X-Men: Apocalypse
8) Kung Fu Panda 3
9) The Angry Birds Movie
10) Ride Along 2

I think you also have to factor in how much Will Smith would cost them. Like I heard a few years ago when they were planning back to back Independence Day movies(cuz fuck me), Will wanted $50 million for those mothafuckas.

A lot cheaper to go with the Great Value! generic brand Will Smith we got here.

So will people finally stop with the "a film with talking animals beat BvS??! Wow" that was going around a few weeks back. The audience clearly does not give a shit if talking animals seem stupid and/or childish. They make bank.

Hard to believe how quickly Apocalypse is disappearing from screens despite still being in the top 10. I wanted to go with my family yesterday but there were no afternoon showings at all in our area, just a couple evening shows at most theaters. Meanwhile Civil War still has four showtimes at the closest theater.

By all means it should have been better though, even with the numbers it did. A BvS movie should have done Avengers numbers.

wow, didn't realize that ID42's rating had tanked so significantly- i thought initial impression were favorable.

We already have that, Guardians of the Galaxy had Rocket.

Disney better get on a Pet Avengers animated film.

It's the only chance an Inhuman has of making the silver screen any time soon.

You had the IGNs of the world inflating the early ratings after the premiere. Most critics had to wait until the film opened to watch it.

You'd almost think studios would look at their (ostensibly) family-friendly superhero properties, then look at what Disney/Pixar are doing, and go "heyyyyyy...."

Warner Bros basically had to be backed into it with Lego Batman. Sony keeps saying they're gonna do it, and then not doing it.

Lego Batman should be huge. The only concern I would have for it is that WB keeps releasing all those Straight to video Lego DC films, taking away some of the novelty.

The DVD LEGO films didn't do the meta jokes or perfectly timed a microwave joke though.

Shallows was pretty good and deserved the traction... Thirst for any movie that isn't a sequel? I know at this point I'm starting to wane on my usual sequel love and there's still the purge and ghostbusters :/

I'm expecting the other big summer sequels to flop as well at this point. Tarzan especially, why another Tarzan movie?

Is it just me or have most of this summer's blockbusters flopped? Sure, you have Disney (and their peons, marvel) rolling in cash, but everything else?

No one asked for ID42. Specifically no one asked for a mediocre sequel.

Central Intelligence held better than I thought. Guess The Rock/Hart combo will continue sometime in the future. I wasn't expecting much but ended up enjoying CI quite a bit.
