Pokémon Go is live on the Google Play Store

Today I've traveled from (in Florida) Orlando to Deland and Lake Mary for work and spotted rustling grass all over all three. Orlando has a ton of Pokespots.

I was going to try and check a couple of them but it's not letting me log in with my Google account right now...

That isnt a very small area. Probably like in the top 50 of US cities.

97-100th largest actually. But no, I wasn't calling my area small.

Damn, 400k is small/rural to you? My hometown had 1000 people. 150k is the biggest city in my entire state, and is my current city, no complaints as far as Pokemon or locations from me.

I worded that kind of poorly. It's not that 400K is small or rural to me, it's that with services or apps like this, you expect only the REALLY big metros to get any proper support, you know? I've lived here most of my life so I'm pretty used to getting passed over cause it's not a "major" area. 400,000 is definitely not small to me, but it's small enough that having this app function like it should feels pretty special.

I was genuinely curious about actual rural or small areas, since it seems like there's gotta be a general population cut-off point where if your city is below this size, you don't really get any landmarks in the app.

So how's everyone's experience going with the game for those of you who live in pretty small towns and rural areas? I honestly expected my area of 400,000 to be underrepresented in a game like this, but was pleasantly surprised by the variety and breadth of Pokéstops and gyms.

lol what? I had to check to be sure, but I live in Atlanta and that has a population of 450k. There is absolutely no shortage of pokestops/gyms. From my apartment, there are 5 gyms within about 5~10 minutes of walking. I imagine yours is fairly similar if you live in a city of 400k.

It's still not up for me yet either. Hopefully, it comes up before I leave work.

Uhh..where are you getting your population numbers from?

Not for PTC accounts. Kinda wishing I had signed up through Google instead...

Still not working here using Google.

I live in a town of 600 people (just moved from a town of 30k) and there are like 7 Pokespots. All of them are exactly in the same spot, so it's not really much when you think about it. My favorite one is the town water tower, haha.

I'm at work on my college campus and from here there's 3 gyms within 5 minutes of walking, if that. There's also a ton of the Pokestops. Pretty much every garden or statue counts. Can't say anything about the rest of the town or wild pokemon but I'm impressed.

To be fair, population means nothing. Seattle has 680000 people living in it, but there's almost 5 million people in its metropolitan area. Phoenix has like 1.5 million people. Way bigger than Seattle right? Except it's land area is 5 times what Seattle's is, it has about the same amount of people in its metro area (which is twice the size of Seattle's metro), and it's population density is half of what Seattle's is. You can just look at population, you have to look at density and the population of the metropolitan area. /rant

Ah, I see. I'm in Fargo, ND, not a ton of people and very low density, but there's a ton of landmarks around me. But Fargo also had a very pretty Ingress population, it was kind of weird like that.

Damn. You win the most rural Pokemon hunter award I've seen in here so far. No gyms for you? :(

Haha, I was just going to make this point, it's really hard to tell anything from listed pop numbers. I live in a suburb of a city with about 175k, and about 45 minutes away from a city with around 400,000. But the dense metro area the two serve is over 6 mil.

Google account still down for me too.

I was in Flint, MI earlier walking around and there were plenty of spots to hit up and Pokémon popping out.
Likewise but I'm starting to notice which Pokémon are common and which are uncommon.

Caterpea, pidgey, ratatta, nidoran, drowsee, zubat, sparrow, Shelder, magikarp, bellsprout, eevee, and weedle.

90% of the Pokemon I saw today we're either drowsee and or pidgey.

The biggest problem with this game is that there is no way to know which direction the Pokemon you may be looking for is hiding.

I don't even think incense even works.

Im giving this game a feel more days until I call it quits. The game needs more things worked out.

Maybe the Pokemon change if you go up north while in Michigan XD.

I get what you're saying, but they have like half a decade of Ingress user data collected by Google to pull from. Only the smallest of suburbs aren't going to be represented here.

I might be able to help here. Someone correct me if I'm wrong since there isn't a whole lot of info out yet. You ever see those grass movements on your map? I think that is one of the Pokemon in your tracker in the bottom right corner. You can narrow that down by picking one from that selector, and then the grass movements will only be for that Pokemon... I think.

Incense worked for me last night, server issues are probably interfering now though.

Can't you tell by looking at the rustling grass, and then moving towards it?

Didn't find any in the small amount of time I played, but I'd imagine that there has to be some since there were Pokespots. And on a side note, off-topic, it's weird hearing the word rural being referred to in relation to where I live. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely true! It's just that I lived in very populated towns/suburbs my whole life (only moved a month ago) so it's still growing on me! I live in Littleton, North Carolina if anyone is wondering :D

You were in Flint too? :o

I have been doing that. I see the grass but when I go to it Pokémon not in my tracker pops up? I remember walking around my college campus after seeing there was an Electrabuzz. And all of the sudden the Pokemon Jynx, Goldbat, and Hypno were popping out within that 30 minutes of traveling to those grassy areas.

Can't you tell by looking at the rustling grass, and then moving towards it?

The grass that is shown ends up being something totally different even though the game tells me something else is closer.

There is no real indicator on which direction to go or if the path of grass is the Pokemon your looking for. Sometimes it says I'm 1 foot away from something but there is no grass to be seen.

Its weird.

You were in Flint too? :o

Naw. I was in Saint Clair Shores, Warren, Sterling Heights, Frasier, Harrison Township, and Center Line today.

Incense worked for me today. It spawned a pokemon at my feet once every 3-5 minutes.

Incense worked for me, but seemed to require me to restart to actually trigger another Pokemon. Idling did nothing. And in the last 10 minutes, the servers crashed, so I can probably say good bye to that time.

I'm logged back in but the pokeball in the top left just keeps spinning and it won't show any pokemon nearby.

Lots of weird bugs happening now actually.

my town has about 10k people in it, and it seems to have some spots with in walking distance.

My wife's workplace makes up a huge area though and has full wifi and seems to be loaded, which isn't surprising given it's a place of nerds. so I will likely go there from time to time to catch stuff.

At this point is obvious that they are working with the servers. Already at level 6, but i am going to wait for the official release.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.0 square mile (2.6 km2)
it's so tiny <3

I used to visit northeastern NC all the time in the summers. lovely homes and forests but I got scared off all the hills driving as a native of flat-or-below-sea-level FL here.

I'm guessing that's why they're waiting for the main release. It's like how you practice on CPUs before going to a tournament to work out the kinks.

Got it working but it's not accepting the nickname I put in. :P

Yep, most seem to be taken. I'm wondering if it shares usernames with Ingress, given some obscure variations on my name were already taken even though I download and installed this pretty much when it was available.

The prospects of this game are almost making me consider dropping some cash on a new bike to ride around and find catches.
Get one because (assuming there are a decent amount of places around you in biking distance anyway) it will also improve your quality of life a lot. making you a more capable pokemon trainer is just a bonus :D
