Business Insider: Nintendo's stock rose 33% since Friday. It's highest since 1983.

Also aren't ae bordering on the precipice of Pokemon MMO and needing Gaben and Miyamoto to team up and save civilization ?

On a certain level, GO is the Pokemon MMO people have been demanding for years. It features a huge player base, venturing off into the unknown in search of Pokemon, becoming a gym leader, spontaneous encounters with other trainers, etc.

It just happens to be overlaid onto the real world.

I was just talking about this with a few friends. It pretty much fulfilled my childhood fantasies, and its just starting.

I just need 1v1 PVP and its going to be perfect.

So you're saying civilizations downfall isnt far behind?

Maybe they should make more mobile games

I'd be down for a Mario game on my phone, and if they're afraid touch screens suck for controls (which they do), then they could sell mfi controllers too.

Pokemon go is insane.. Here in NYC, you can't walk one block without a full grown adult trying to catch a Pokemon. Just now I walked by a girl on her smoke break, flicking a pokeball up, and on the (really long) line to the ice cream shop she works for there were another bunch playing.

I've never seen anything like this

yup complete with camping gyms and spots for NMs.

There were 100 people at a park in downtown, 95% playing Pokemon Go. Everyone was super friendly sharing tips with complete strangers. Grand parents, families with strollers, groups of young men, young kids. This is the real deal.

Pokemon go is easily one of the best Nintendo related games ever made

Yeah no. People shouldn't lose their damn heads here. Stock increasing is good. That should get the investors off their back for a while but Pokemon Go is a pretty shallow experience for the most part. It's been out a few days. Let's talk in in a few weeks regarding it's sustainability once things settle down.

The app is a big nostalgia pull for those that haven' touched anything Pokemon in years if not decades. That's not a negative at all. I haven't played every Pokemon game and not a hardcore player of the games and it's a nice diversion for me to. However it's in no way even approaching a replacement for the non-mobile games nor should be even included in a sentence talking about "best Nintendo related game ever made".

I enjoy Pokemon and think it's a great series. I agree with you though This is far from the best thing Nintendo has done in years. It's a good start and I can see it being a long term hit if they keep up with features and more to do. I don't think it will fizzle overnight but if they don't support it with some great updates than I can see it losing the appeal it initally has.

It's like Jackie Chan. His Western movies (mobile) are made to help give him more recognition worldwide and more funding for this homeland movies (consoles).

We do not know what their input into the actual game is, so they may in fact, not be invovled; or they could have done almost everything; or anything in-between. Is that a problem?

Iwata was involved, they're making the accessory that goes along with it, they own the IP, and did all the marketing.

It's Nintendo's game.

Yep. And those type of platforms are just a stopgap until Internet capacity and availability is at the point to allow all gaming to be app centered with all processing done in the cloud. Think PS Now with no lag and current top graphics.

Although I do agree that the future holds more or less a scenario like you described, we're still a little far off, meaning that there's nothing wrong in capitalizing and betting in new hardware, at least for now.

Oh of course. They've got to do what they can to make profits in the meantime.

That what happens when the company with the strongest IPs in the business release a title on platforms the majority of people can access.

So wait, did Nintendo invest in Niantic or just in the development of this game specifically? And does Google still own Niantic?

It's almost as if Nintendo's IPs are more successful if they release them on others' hardware.

...huh.

No. It's because it's on phones, that thing everyone has and that there is absolutely no stigma against. Also it's free to play.

Releasing this game on PS4 or something would not have the success we're seeing now.

Not even the first Pokemon game on mobile though. This is probably the most successful Pokemon title that has been on mobile. It took a big idea to capture peoples imaginations and gain attention. Had it been anything else, it would have been ignored like the others.

If Square and Namco of all companies haven't gone all mobile yet, Nintendo sure as hell isn't doing so for another two decades. They're smartly diversifying, which includes proper mobile games (which should make money and increase brand exposure), licensing, and proper console and handheld games. Just like all the Japanese publishers have done in the past year or so. A strong mobile Nintendo will be a boon for console Nintendo.

This is a Nintendo thread. You're not allowed to say these reasonable things in here.

People are fooling themselves if they think this thing has legs. It's this year's Angry Birds.

angry birds was #1 in the top grossing charts for 3 years straight, top 100 for 6 years straight. if pokemon go has the same legs it will make nintendo about as much money as the entire rest of the pokemon franchise combined.

When it comes to Nintendo, it's so weird to me that for some it's either "100% console" or "100% mobile".

It should be both and it will be.

For now at least, the problem is that the consumer Nintendo attracts is not gonna buy more gaming hardware, because they already have the hardware they want.

Dedicated gaming hardware for Nintendo is a dead end they will face eventually. Mobile is the perfect solution.

This is the mobile world, so I hope Nintendo won't eat themselves with those results. One day you are the king, the other you are fucking zynga.

Man, I remember stockholders imploring Nintendo to go mobile years ago, and people kept talking about what idiots those people are, and how it would be the end of Nintendo if they did that.

It'd be the end of an era to be sure. Mobile only Nintendo would blow

Zynga was never big on mobile though. They got big with Farmvile and Facebook games before that bubble bursted.

Mobile might not be the most stable market but some people here are acting like top grossing mobile games come and go in months.

Candy Crush and Clash of Clan are 5 years old and they are still in the top charts.

The title of this thread is factually incorrect. ("It's highest since 1983.")

It's not.

"Nintendo's stock rose 33% since Friday."
23%

Impressive! And to think, Pokemon Go is probably only 20% of what it could be. While it has it's charms and clearly an addictive nature, I wish it were more feature rich...

But it's free, so why the hell not right?

Who says they have to go mobile only?

Pokemon sells.

This is the closest thing to a Pokemon MMORPG as we're probably going to get. I just wish the battling was similar to the main Pokemon games.
