Twitter has just banned Milo Yiannopoulos permanently

Well, his Ghosterbusters review on this awful breitbart site is really ... something else. Like a wet dream for any misogynic shithead out there.

But why on earth is Twitter acting now??? After years of years of unpunished hate speech, undeleted ISIS accounts, open harassment and so on, this is now the line that have been crossed for good? I don't know what to think about it tbh

It doesnt matter if they are starting to do it now. Its clear they have let a cesspool of people fester on their site for too long, especially for how loose their privacy settings are. Its good they are acting despite having a poor record and I welcome more of it. Constant Harassment, hate speech and manufacturing tweets to cause a controversy should get people banned. Also they HAVE been deleting isis accounts with a lot more regularity.

No no no no no.

This is not how you handle people with horrible views. Pushing them away only validates their beliefs and solidifies their fan base further.

A very extreme example but Germany pretty much bans the swastika and people espousing Nazi rhetoric... If this guy was as awful as it's claimed then he really is a nasty piece of work operating in a capacity that he is probably breaking several hate crime laws, sexism, racism possibly. I dunno what he gets up to. More than being banned from.Twitter sounds like the guy needs some time in prison, maybe show the wee fuckers who follow him and espouse his bullshit online that they're clearly in the wrong and need to rethink their actions.

2016 has been shit until today.

Anitas response to the news...

Thread is 18 pages so I doubt I have anything new to add.

I just wanna post in this thread and say Milo is scum, and I hope him and his followers go back to their 12chan hellhole.

Because it made headline news on the BBC. Twitter only gives a fuck when they get called out by big names for it.

The things he said about women and black people are terrible, and I wouldn't agree with his views in a million years. But... isn't this a little hypocritical? Basically the way I see this, for example, we're all up on Erdogan's ass for trying to be a dictator and eliminating his opposition. But by doing this, isn't Twitter doing the same by taking a firm stance against anything not left-wing or liberal? Twitter even allows ISIS information to be spread on their service, then where's the limit?? I'm as left-wing as they get, but I don't think censoring is the ideal way to "convert" right-wing/bigoted people. In fact, I think it has a counterproductive effect.

Anyway, thought I'd contribute.

Its not "censoring" conservative views. Its banning someone for directly harassing another person.

There's a million other right-wing people still on the service and he repeatedly violated the ToS.

The take away should be that Twitter should go even further with its moderation so there aren't a ton of 'exemptions' from the rules like the ISIS examples you gave, not that this was an unjust banning that should be undone.

Anyone expecting better moderation from Twitter going forwards or giving them kudos for doing the right thing, DONT.

The only reason this happened is because the target of harassment this time was someone famous. They couldnt take the PR hit.

Twitter is still garbage.

Twitter is the gutter of the internet, people really care what is being said on twitter ? really ...

At its best twitter is one of the best things on the internet. Especially when it comes to breaking news. Twitter is not the gutter, it is people and their inability to be nice to each other.

As for Milo, about time really. The guy was a vicious bully.

What are you calling "breaking news" i'm not on twitter and well informed.

So they boot him off after his target for harassment has already left Twitter.

Too little, too late. Twitter's constant refusal to do anything about harassers, be they high or low profile, is really awful for a company of their size and resources.

What's even the point when he's already "won" to an extent?

This nonsense is ridiculous and sounds like it's directly from the script that all of his fans follow. Right-wingers constantly complain about being censored and discriminated against, all while their accounts are still open and available for them to complain about being censored and discriminated against. He got numerous warnings, decided to ignore them, and the people in charge of Twitter finally got tired of him. It has nothing to do with converting anyone and everything to do with punishing someone who wasn't going to stop breaking the rules. Find someone worthwhile to lionize.

The TOS is a load of bullshit anyway and basically just there for the sake of a legal disclaimer. The good - and bad - thing about Twitter is that it's (supposed to be) a reflection of the society, albeit fuelled by anonymity. It's awful that Leslie has had to endure this, but there's no way to ban shitty people. There will always be shitty people and the best way is to educate them instead of banning them so they can fuel their anger even more.

That means twitter can be a good source for breaking news. Honestly it's good for news in general. People using twitter just have to find a source they find credible.

My Twitter feed is like my Facebook feed. Usually good cause I'm choosing who I follow and what I want to see.

Well anything, peoples responses to an event, people during an event.

E.G political commentators reactions to Brexit.

or the young palestine girl giving us updates about what is happening to where she lives during a week of bombardment.

It is a extremely effective tool, that is why so many groups such as GG, or White supremacists use it, you can quickly get out a message to thousands, or even millions of people. It is why people during disasters/accidents/attacks/under oppression use it.

You have invalidated any worthwhile discussion you were going to have with me by comparing me with those shits. Nice going.

The onus is not on everyone else to educate a dumbass who has made it clear that they aren't open to learning anything.

Oh well, I'll live.

He had it coming.

Milo relentlessly bullied, abused and harassed people and got away with it. He stirred the hornets nest and unleashing a tirade of "people" to continue the abuse for days on end, often digging into their past and private lives and hoping something sticks to see if they were right.

What happens when you bully someone at school or at work? Detention and the sack. Free speech is not an excuse here imo.

There will always be shitty people and the best way is to educate them instead of banning them so they can fuel their anger even more.

Why? It's not Twitter's job to fix the shitty people. It's their job to ensure that their service provides an experience that their users are happy with.

Twitter harassment has been a known problem for ages, and they've done nothing about it. Frankly, it's worth more to Twitter to be seen as a service used by "celebrities" than it is for them to actively tolerate the loud and obnoxious shithead contingent. When those two things become mutually exclusive, it's a pretty safe bet as to which one they'll pick.

That said, it's also a pretty safe bet that they'll do the bare minimum that they can get away with.

Lol at the "but now Twitter silencing the right!" comments. They banned one Dude who has been warned multiple times and still openly harassed people and encouraged others to do the same.

These people don't want to be educated, they want to be entertained by someone's life burning in front of them. They know there's a real person on the other side, but for them, that's just what makes it funny.

Twitter is a service so yeah there is a way to ban shitty people and they enforced that. Problem is they don't do it nearly enough because their platform is run amok with racists and a multitude of other assholes who leap the boundary that is decent human interaction. You are not free from consequence in the real world so why should the internet be any different.

So he can't do it again next week to somebody else

Can we stop entertaining the idea that thinly veiled leftie bashing like this is starting any sort of conversation. A black woman was the target of large scale racist harassment campaign started by this man. If you think that's worth glossing over and instead want to have a go about censorship, that's on you. But no one is buying the "I'm just trying to have a conversation, stop shouting at me!" bullshit. So stop trying.

Yeah let's 'educate' people like Milo, that'll work.

There is nothing to educate when it comes to the leaders of the alt right. They know what they're doing.

Let's just stop the hand-wringing here; nobody has a moral, ethical or legal obligation to provide you with a place to harass others. Banning people who have a long history of abusive behaviour isn't censorship, it's protecting the free-exchange of ideas on your service by ensuring that it's not only the exclusive domain of the abusers and the thick-skinned.

The dankest aryans.

> mfw cuck beta white-genocide bundles of sticks juice the n-word

You are doing a fine job making that comparison yourself with this fucking "censorship" fallacy.

You don't think this is slightly ironic? Where Leslie got harassed by bigots about the colour of her skin, I'm being harassed by people - on what is considered to be a left-wing, liberal forum - implying something that's actually 180 degrees backwards?

Yes, as a non-white Muslim living in Europe I know nothing about racial profiling and other forms of discrimination, so I sure am condoning what happened to Leslie. /s

Unfortunately this is nothing more than a feather in the cap for the people like Milo.

He'll use Facebook as his next vehicle of what he does, and given he's already pushed the agenda for FB being anti-conservative, he may think he can get away with continuing as he was on Twitter.

I'm sure his reaction to this will be a shrug of the shoulders and a smile when he thinks he has just sold a few more hundred tickets for shows on his "tour"

Let's see this logic applying to radical Islamist clerics who promote violence and terror. These people are banned from speaking in the UK, it's a crime. Twitter's done the right thing, let's see more of this. Hate speech is not the same as free speech. And this guy has done more than just speak, he's acted, and encouraged others to do so.
