Overwatch gets Summer Games update (new mode in Weekly Brawl, new skins/etc)

Corporate Defense squad out in full tonight, whew

They're big boys and girls, they can take the criticism

Gaf is just rotten with them lately. The Pokémon Go thread was fucking lousy with posters just posting in response to literally every single criticism of Niantic. The level of devotion people have toward companies is truly impressive sometimes. It's really no wonder the industry has shifted the way it has. I'm sure MS is still shocked that their original XBone plan didn't work out.

Still baffles me how some people can't understand how cosmetic items can be important for people. Don't care about them? Good for you, but not everyone shares this opinion. They're in the game for a reason: people enjoy being able to customize their characters. Most of us would GLADLY pay for this shit. We just don't want to deal with this gambling bullshit.

Not a difficult concept to comprehend.

I'd say you're the minority, cosmetics are very popular in every game that has them, they basically saved CS:GO.
You're saying they're important because they saved CS:GO through gambling. Ironic considering the tone of the thread.

I can't help but think they didn't make most of these sprays into actual costumes because they want to avoid more SFM craziness.

This

People saying they don't care, why are you in here then? This thread has nothing for you.

Its not just about wanting all the skins. Its about wanting that one skin for that one character you play and knowing that you'll never be able to get it without effectively gambling.

Compare this to something like Street Fighter or DOA. If you want a skin for a character, you buy it directly. No questions asked. Here you pay for a CHANCE at getting it, and not a particularly good chance seeing as dupes are a thing.
Damn that's fucked. Sold overwatch awhile ago cuz I wasn't feeling it. But this is something else. Straight predator status cuz some some boys and girls can't help themselves. Oh well, it's their money.

But Overwatch doesn't have an economy based around the buying/selling of these cosmetics, like CS:GO (or TF2, DOTA 2, etc.).
HOLY SHIT A ZARYA SKIN THE ISN'T TERRIBLE
Wrong.

oh wow, all this freak out for nothing.
Not really. If you actually read though the thread you will know that the chances of actually getting something you want is extremely small. Saying "you have a chance to get it though regular playing" is the same thing as saying that you have the chance of winning the lottery.

You say it like gambling was there day 1, it wasn't. Also I would argue that minority of CSGO playerbase even used those shady gambling sites, even when they were super popular through steamer and youtuber promotions.

Seriously. I like getting new skins. I want all of them even if I don't necessarily love them. I don't want to have to keep spinning a slot machine to try and get all of them.

It is crazy, visuals are a huge part of games. They are a visual medium. Visual content is therefore very important to some people.

Heck, part of Overwatch's (incredible) charm is down to the visuals and animation alone.

I'm sorry for being a shill, let's save the gaming world together. How can we stop the blizzard

I just started playing on ps4 and got 2 legendaries already sorry tovarsic

Either you are quite naive about drop rates in OW or play a lots / day or extremely lucky with your loot. Getting even 2 legendary skins in 2 weeks is borderline next coming of Jesus for me with my RNG luck.

I'm level 40, have never bought any loot boxes, and have 3 legendary skins with enough coins set aside to buy another.

Thing is, I just don't care too much about the cosmetics as is. So it's really hard for me to get worked up about cosmetics that I have a chance to get just by playing.

Wouldn't some of the costumes in the sprays not make sense as actual models, from a rigging perspective? I'm thinking specifically of Reinhardt. He needs a bulky character model to not have his shield gauntlet not be floating above his arm, not attached to anything.

And the people posting vitriol and swearing that if Niantic just communicated they'd be satiated, and then when they did respond low and behold it wasn't good enough and the goalposts were moved.

It'll just change the good feeling I have been having with overwatch. I knew it would happen I just didn't know when.

You can't even see your character for most of the game.

Official Holding Hands Ceremony - ($10 entry fee, chance to hold hands not guaranteed)

Yes, I can, by not buying any of these loot boxes and expressing my disappointment with their implementation. Can you handle other people not liking something?

Can you handle other people thinking your distaste and kneejerk criticism is ridiculous?

I'm not sure if you're serious or joking.... You won't get 20 summer items about of 20 boxes because you can get duplicates. It's also reasonable to assume that some items are much rarer than others just the same way it is now. 20 boxes will most likely get you a few sprays and some duplicates which you'll get regular coins for. If you really think you'll get a legendary skin out of 20 boxes you'll likely be disappointed.
The way I see this, someone will get a legendary summer skin, someone will be very lucky and get two. Someone will get 10 sprays and 10 voice lines, and some unlucky soul will get 5 duplicates.
Yet still, at the end of three weeks, everybody will have new items that were not available before...completely free of charge, just as a reward for playing. In those three weeks, if you play an hour a day, you get 15-20 brand new items, if you play more you will get more, and if you (like myself) lucked out to be on the verge of prestiging to level 101, you'll get 20 boxes really quickly.
At the end of the promotional period I'll have somewhere between 20 and 50 new summer items.
How that is a bad thing is beyond my comprehension.

It wouldn't have saved the game if it was there from day 1 lol. And I didn't say anything about those shady betting sites in that post.

because their communication was shit and didn't address most issues. Just because they broke their silence doesn't mean they said anything meaningful.
You can't even see your character for most of the game.
you see their guns literally all the time. Literally.

Go ahead if you want tbh.

Reinhardt's shield is already floating in front of his arm iirc.

If they weren't selling the boxes for actual money I might agree with you but as they are I think it's fair to criticise this particular form of monetisation.

I love playing Overwatch on PS4, and for the most part I don't mind the Loot Box system. It sucks to get doubles that hardly pay out much in the way of in-game currency, but I deal with it. I play enough that I will eventually get the stuff I really want, or will at least earn enough in-game currency to buy what I want.

But this timed Olympic content is a mess. I would much rather have the option to give Blizzard $10 for a complete set of these rare skins/sprays/whatever, than go through the whole pain in the ass of trying to collect them in the Loot Boxes.

That being said, frankly speaking, I think that this Olympic content should be freely given to the community, without unlocks or having to jump through any hoops, as it is a promotion for a real world event and adds absolutely nothing of value to the lore or characters within the game.

People were constantly saying they'd be happy if Niantic said they would be bringing tracking back. They did. Apparently that's a "non-answer".

you see their guns literally all the time. Literally.

The guns are not the whole skin. And someone with a gold weapon wouldn't even see the skin on the guns anyway. Body changes are pretty drastic and weapon changes usually aren't so much anyway.

Pretty much. I used the free $10 Xbox credit o got from the Fallout 4 thing on the 11 loot box deal. Out of the 44 items, I only got 2 skins. The Raven skin for Reaper and the Frogston Winston costume. Both characters I don't use. The rest of the items were sprays and duplicates.

I'll never use real money on an Overwatch loot box again

well fuck it, I've already been called childish by BannedEpisode so:
Zarya isn't a typical woman, mate.
Strong Russian/Scandinavian women that do not adhere to the traditional standards of "feminine beauty" is a pretty common trope. Zayra is a trope.

don't like that you can't buy the skins directly using credits. to get the summer event skin you want you will probably have to pay up, especially if it's legendary quality.

obviously doing this way makes them more money, if the skins are truly limited and not "limited" like Riot, where it's possible they might bring them back sometime in the future, then there will be a frenzy by collectors to open as many lootboxes as possible before the event ends.

of course, Blizzard only promised that maps and heroes would be free, they were silent on whether all future skins would be purchaseable with credits, but everyone sort of assumed it would be the case. I mean, imagine being someone who paid $100 for lootboxes and got a bunch of dupes, and now Blizzard is telling you hey, all those duplicates you got, they are useless if you want to buy our event skins directly, because you can't!

on top of this, it is only guaranteed that ONE out of four items will be a summer event item, which is pretty ridiculous for a paid lootbox. i can understand having only one out of four guaranteed for the lootboxes you earn for leveling up - but for the paid event lootboxes it should be all four.

At the very least, I can't see the McCree and Pharah sprays also being skins, since they're basically the same as their defaults.

I genuinely like a lot of these designs, though Tracer looks dorky as hell.

im thinking that there are only going to be 3 skins. lucio, tracer and zarya. the rest will probably be sprays.

Don't care about Olympic themed shit, so not going to spend a penny on these.

Unless 'no coat' Mei is actually a skin, but I'll still debate it heavily.

this over and over..

I miss the days where game devs where more "aritsts" then worker...
nowdays, game development is a business in its own might, so it's always money money money...
Heck, for all the hate Metzen gets, he at least continues to be a face for a company..
he has the verve, and the mannerism of someone willing to put a face behind a project, both when the project soars and when the project falls..

but on the other hand, the way they handed overwatch.. i don't like it honestly...

You're fine lol.

People are just running a bit hot about this.

I dunno man, up until this DLC i thought they did a great job on post release support.
