Civilization 6 announced, out October 21st

comparing a screen of 6 with all the (imho ugly) ui elements turned off, with 5 where everything is on the screen that can be at a complete different zoom level does not prove anything :D


6 looks like an iOS game to me, too. I think that tablet cpus are not powerful enough to compute the ai in a reasonable time yet, but the graphics shouldn't be a major problem.

This is such a BS comparison. The tile info is on for this Civ 5 screen, so of course the screen is going to look busy compared to the Civ 6 screen, where the tile info is hidden. If you were to hide the tile info in that Civ 5 screen, it would look clean and readable.
 
It's as much a question of demographics as anything else. Yes, some ultra-realistic artstyle would probably have looked great. But it probably wouldn't have run on the dishwashers that they're aiming at as bottom end hardware (remember that Civ's appeal extends way beyond 'hardcore' PC gamers). Personally I think that for what they've done the style looks amazing; animations are characterful, leader portraits look amazing, and the overall visual style is extremely readable.

I agree. I don't mind the art style change but the UI itself seems...well, cheap.

CIV 5 had a very clean and polished looking UI. I can only assume that they are trying to cut costs with the CIV 6 UI. The only thing that looks better is the Civ diplomacy screen models.
 
It's not like you couldn't see stuff in Civ 5...

Anyway, the looks of the game are one thing, what really bothers me is the UI I saw in that stream. Urgh, that was absolutely horrible, really.

I'll get used to the map graphics, but I really hope there will be some improvements for the UI until release.
 
I mean fuck, you tell me Montezuma from Civ V doesn't have personality or emotion? Holy shit that guy goes mad when you Declare War on him with glee!

Graphics have never been the biggest problem regarding Civ's performance, it was always the CPU that limited it for me, as calculating the turns takes reaaally long later in a game.
 
Honestly, after seeing that Pedro screenshot and a bunch of others, I best someone who had never heard of the series and seen both Civ V and Civ VI would naturally assume that Civ V was the most recent game.

Someone that doesn't have eyes, you mean? My God, yes, it's cartoonish, but the tech behind is so far ahead Civ V it is not even fun (of course it is, it's the newer game, lol:).
 
While the graphics from V > VI are not the evolutionary leap I was expecting, I've made peace with the atheistic shift to a more cartoon-like presentation.

In that light, I think it looks just fine for what they appear to be going for.

This is coming from someone who was pretty turned off by the initial reveal screenshots.

Hype level rising.
 
I much prefer the map, interface and leader portraits of Civ V vs Civ VI. I really dislike the new art direction and at this point going to hold off till the first expansion. Meh.

I disagree. What's cheap about the UI? And what's the problem with dark blue and brown? Brown's warmness and blue's coldness keep the overall look of the interface neutral, while V's blue/marble was too cool and dry.

I love Civ V's art and interface, and I love what I've seen of Civ VI's art and interface. The latter looks utterly beautiful. You're all complaining about a couple dumb splash screens? SMH
 
I feel bad for those of you skipping Civ 6 because of its art style. I don't think my condescension--which I offer here, free of charge--is going to be nearly as entertaining.
 
Lol everyone in this thread claiming they're going to skip Civ 6 because of the artstyle is going to buy it after getting swept away by all the 9/10s from reviewers.
 
The art style honestly reminds me of Civ IV, with how colorful and playful it looks compared to the more serious but refined Civ III/V.

Also "Pixar character" is a hilarious comparison since they vary from crap to good.

Oh I'm going to buy it, I'm just disagreeing with the artstyle comment.

I'm still wondering if I should go for DD though or if the physical here will be cheaper (SEA discount).

I play Civilization V. I watched all the leader previews. The opinions on my post already reflect that, and leader animations are EXACTLY why I called V's Pedro an animatronic puppet.

I dunno, a character simply standing and wobbling doesn't scream Pixar quality to me.

And I wish more animatronic puppets actually move like them.

Pssst....It has a lot more character, especially in motion. I'll take an exaggerated stylized depiction bursting with personality over an soulless creatively bankrupt depiction any day.

You're memories must be fucking with you, because Pedro in Civ V looks absolutely terrible, especially in motion, the dude looks like there's a puppeteer under his table actively reanimating his corpse or something. As someone who has studied animation off and on for the past decade, the animation quality is impeccable in Civ VI, and it's not inconsistent at all, every single leader revealed thus far is oozing with personality. Put aside your feelings for the exaggerated design and look at the sheer amount of information about these characters that are conveyed in the extremely brief seconds of animation we've seen. It is NOT an easy task to condense as much personality into short bursts as we've seen in Civ VI.

I have mixed feelings about the new character models and animations, but yeah, the backgrounds are a clear step down.

I dislike the argument that "there is so much animation so it's better!" It's like saying Food Fight is a good film because all of the characters move around.

And my post has nothing against animators nor to the people developing it, far from it, but I find it disingenuous that to argue with someone you have to care about "their feelings" more importantly over what is shown.

The Civ V expressions pretty much convey what is happening easily. They were lazy by recycling some animations (like spies being killed doing the defeat animation) but they were on point. There was no need to prattle around. In fact they remind me more like paintings with movements here and there to showcase what they were expressing.

The game in the stream was at 720p for some reason. They said so at the beginning. Watch the youtube videos and you'll see the UI is far less invasive. Of course you may be referring to the general look of the UI but the stream does make it look particularly bad.
 
..why are so many people picking on the graphics of this? Its literally the least important part of a civ game! The people saying they wont play it.. wtf is wrong with you? Did you put 1000+ hours into civ 5 because the graphics look so great? You think thats where your enjoyment of the franchise stemmed from?
 
I will of course not skip it. I play civ for something like 25 years now (no idea tbh) and I will not stop doing so because of the graphics.

That will not change my mind though, I still don't like the overall looks of it.



Regarding the stream: 720p? What the actual fuck where they thinking. Will look into other videos tonight. You have a link to a good one?

What's wrong? For starters, the not highlighted parts of the map are brown and blue too, so there's already enough brown and blue in the scene, to need any more. Then, brown and dark blue are colors you'd expect to have in your grandpa's room, not in the UI of a game whose style is super cartoonish. Add the icons. Okay, I understand many are placeholder, but it's like they had twe entirely different ideas and could not settle for one. Mixed them and you've got something that screams I don't know what I am!

I'm also feeling some fatigue from the constant complaints regarding the graphics. There are so many new mechanical elements that we could take a look at and maybe speculate about from the videos but like > 50% of the posts in this thread are about the graphics for some reason. There isn't another thread covering Civ 6 as extensively as this one so it's not as though I can just go start a discussion somewhere else either.

For instance did anyone get a chance to play around with harbors and/or barracks in the previews? I think those got unstacked from the city as well, and it sounds like military units can be deployed from harbors/barracks instead of the city proper. If so does that mean the unit production queue gets moved to those districts, or is that still in the city itself? Was it possible to have multiple build queues for military units going at once if a city has multiple barracks/harbors?

One of the things I spotted in this Gamespot video is that each City State appears to provide a unique bonus, so Zanzibar provides a unique luxury to friends that you can't earn any other way, while Geneva will boost research to 15% if you're friends with them but not at war with anyone else.

A cool edition I think, City States felt like a fairly dry addition to me in Civ V, this adds more flavour to them

I strongly approve of the direction the game has taken and it truly seems like they're trying to make the game as unique as possible on each playthrough, with so many unique abilities per Civ, unique agendas, unique bonuses from city states, unique bonuses from individual Great People... plus the extra specialization you'll need now that you can't cram every building under the sun into one city. It really looks like a game that could offer a different experience every time, more so than before.

For anyone with the stamina, there's a two hour video without voiceover out there which includes a lot of opportunites for pausing to read the tooltips, oberserve the game in motion and also listen to the music and Sean Bean's tech quotes. I'm pretty sure the video starts with the new main theme by Christopher Tin as well.
