Strong opening weekend based on those solid trailers.

I think there will be a heavy drop off, probably not as bad at BvS.

$250 million Domestic. $300 million tops. $750 worldwide.

Those sentences contradict each other.

If it opens at 140m+ and has better holds than BvS there's absolutely no way it only gets to 250m.

It'll get to 250M unless the bottom drops out of it.

It won't get a 1.78x multiplier. Even Watchmen and BvS were much better than that

Worst case scenario on a $140m opening will be $275M. Probably closer to $300M given the summer weekdays

Head and shoulders above Thor, Thor 2, Iron Man 2, the 2nd Hulk movie, Origins: Wolverine, Fantastic Four...hmm, feel like I am missing some joke here.

I don't blame you. They deleted several Joker scenes in the final movie.

Batman vs Superman's opening weekend was $166 million.

It ended its run at $300 million domestic and $872 million worldwide.

I'm unsure what you quibble with in my assessment. Better holds that BvS doesn't necessarily mean the film will end above BvS.

it hit 330M.

It'll hit 275-300 With zero comp.

140M OW and BvS legs gets you 277M.

If this holds slightly better it can hit 300M.

"I consider myself superior to the average person who paid to see this movie"

-- average person who paid to see this movie

1 complaint by paid reviewers I always see that bothers me is "a bit too long"
Im sorry but when im paying $16+ for an IMAX ticket unless its the worst thing ever I absolutely couldn't care less.

The only movie that bothered me in the theater for being too long was PoTC:At World's End because that movie was such a mess compared to DMC which was one of my favorite theater experiences.
And Gods and Generals(and thats because I got dragged into it as a 12year old and wanted to see something else which I think was LotoR)

WB's marketing division really deserves a raise, they marketed the hell out of the movie.

Their editors need to be fired though.

Apparently the edit of the movie was done by the people that did the great trailers so...

Then that explains alot of my problems with the movie!
Hey guys, we can make a boring scene WICKED COOL if we do a guardian of the galaxy and add a cool song here. Oh wait now the entire first third is that boring scene we made cool. Let's make sure to make the rest of the movie boring as possible to even it out.

Looking back at the very first trailer released for the film, do you think the BO takings would have been anywhere near it though?

Personally I think they should have stayed the course on the original marketing pre BvS, hype levels would have been lower, but I think the film will do way better over the long run. I am expecting a large drop off as the word goes around.

... Or is this all a new marketing strategy to boost disc sales with another Ultimate Cut? *Cue Unsolved Mysteries tunes*

Never said anything about being superior to anyone. But hey personal attacks because I didn't like a movie you did is cool too.

I havent seen the movie...

Not personal; it made me laugh; no offense. No one thinks they're average Joe, until they're sitting in a movie theater opening weekend with average Joe. Everyone can't not be average Joe, y'know?

That was my thinking as well, but BvS changed that. Like at least 4 or 5 of my friends said they didn't watch it because it has bad reviews. That happened never before. They fucking watch The Purge movies.

Purge election year is better than Suicide Squad and BvS so good on them.

Suicide Squad might not get a China so that will impact it's box-office potential.

As nothing substantial is coming out in August, I think the declines will be less pronounced than let's say BvS.

All in all:

Domestic: $300-330M
International: $350-400M

Yeah. Word of mouth is everything. I convinced a few people to not watch BvS, told them it wasn't worth the money.

But these movie seems to be more casual fun so maybe it has that going for them

My issue with the idea that this is going to best BvS's gross is that BvS had fuck all for competition for a month surrounding it, while August has the last remains of this summer of suck.

The hype is real. The marketing has been above average.

I expect a significant dropoff next weekend. Not BvS levels but serious enough to fall short of the studio's hopes. If this movie does have surprise legs, though, it'll be due to the characters. Harley and Deadshot carry the movie. Joker will probably be divisive, but people are going to want to see Leto's new version for themselves.

No way will Suicide Squad have the broad appeal of GotG, whose mojo it's clearly trying to steal.

If word of mouth meant anything Star Trek Beyond would be doing way better. This is just a weird summer where it's very hard to match critical reception to box office success.

If they were smart they could have made this a franchise similar to Fast and Furious. Be able to squeeze out like crazy numbers of sequels and make mad cash.

So the budget for this film is 175m
Realistically how much does it need to make to do "well"?
Star Trek is and has always been an outlier. The series just isn't popular with mainstream audiences. Even the 09 film couldn't even crack $400 million.
My dads been watching Star Trek all my life and I've caught quite a few glimpses of it since I was young and I still have no idea what the fuck it's about and I'm sure there are others that feel that way which probably turns a lot of people off. At least with star wars it's common knowledge that it's Jedi against the dude in the scary looking black suit.

The article that talked about behind the scenes trouble said $700-$800 million.

Yeah without China I don't see it hitting that which is unfortunate. Because it really does have loads of potential and looking at what was changed or removedi think they had a gem of a movie but they tore it up to be more audience friendly. I can see it doing around 600m which should break even if 7-800m is doing "well" but man what a missed opportunity.

Or maybe just maybe people actually liked the movie.
Given on opening night nobody but critics have seen the movie they're clearly there either for the brand, the cast, the director or the marketing not because they like the movie: they don't that yet they haven't seen it.

I'm thinking brand and marketing (and let's be honest the trailers/posters show a lot more Joker than is representative and also made sure it was known Batman was in there).

It's a good opening but with high budget and apparently high break even point I'd caution people don't assume it's a hit until it's legs are known. As it seems it's not getting China release SS could still easily struggle to deliver much actual revenue.

The only thing I heard about Beyond was that it was like a TV episode. That put me right off, why would I bother going to a cinema to see that? Plus, nothing particularly special about it from what critics said.
