The International 2016 (Aug 3rd - 13th)

This could backfire so hard

'oh shit, am I winning?'

I could see Secret pulling some super cheese strat to make it past the first round.

Only one I'm not sure what to put is in ESC and Fnatic.

Touched a nerve did I? Pity.

Prior to TI they had consistent good performances in LANs, reaching grand finals and even winning. Add the fact all invited teams had stable rosters for months.

The question still stands, what's the point of your observation? Who deserved the invite if not them then?

I'll give that Liquid probably did, although Kuro and FATA have been a disaster. But Navi getting a direct invite is dubious and was very much debated at the time.

They were the only team with a stable roster that had been doing alright. The only other team that would have made sense was Fnatic, but there's no way they could invite 2 SEA team (or so they thought, TNC has been a pleasant surprise). They couldn't invite Secret or EG because of roster changes. They couldn't invite any of the other Chinese teams because they had either changed rosters or been impressively bad. I think there was a case for giving coL the last spot over Na'vi, but considering they couldn't beat Execration in the Wild Card, Valve was right not to invite them.

How about the team that had to play through Wildcards and ended up not only at the top of their group but with the best score overall?

After watching bits and pieces of the last major, I can't really understand why they double backed from the fantastic picture in picture mechanic they had in place there...
I'm watching EG vs Alliance Game 1 atm and with all the Roshs and split pushes, it would have been fantastic to have all that in sight through pip.
Why don't they use that anymore? Is it because it's still the Group Stage?

Last year CDEC surprised everyone. Did they also deserve a direct invite? Maybe they deserved to have Secret's ticket...

The point is, direct invites are given to those who, up until that point, where performing the best, even though that's a highly subjective thing to assess. More often than not surprises happen, underdogs surprise everyone and/or top contenders disappoint, and that's not a bad thing.

Not really. I'd say if it was down to consistency, then Fnatic has just as big a shout as NAVI then. Besides two recent wins, Navi has done nothing in two years. In that time, Fnatic has qualified for three of the recent Majors and last year's TI. Something Navi didn't do. I'll add Wings to that discussion too.

Liquid has been a huge failure this TI (so much for "having a stable roster"). Navi have performed as quite a lot expected. They should have gone through regional qualifiers - they would have probably performed better right now.

But feel free to tell me how the post TI shuffle is going to happen. You seem well connected.

Fnatic only started doing well at Shanghai, and I did say they were up there, but they also swapped out one of their starters for someone who was a sub, which--although following Valve's guidelines--was technically a roster change. Na'vi has been having their best run since about 2014, and while they haven't played in any of the Major's, the tournaments they have gone to they did pretty well at. Plus I think Valve just loves Dendi. Wings absolutely tanked in Manila, which played a big part in their lack of a direct invite. Yea they rebounded but by then invites had already gone out.

Liquid is underperforming, but are you just going to ignore 2nd place finishes at 2 Majors and countless placements at top tier tournaments throughout the year? They had a rock solid roster that performed very well. So they had a rough Group Stage, they are definitely still a top tier team. I don't think going through the Regional Qualifiers would have changed much for Na'vi, other than probably axing Escape Gaming from the event. Valve wanted to invite 6 stable teams who were playing decently well, and Na'vi fit that description. I mean hell, Secret stomped the Regional Qualifier and has been absolutely atrocious in the Group Stage, so how teams performed a month ago clearly has no reflection on how they are playing now.

Yep, as I said, I'm probably being too harsh on Liquid (although they have been a failure this TI - no one can really deny that - and it also disproves the whole thing about a stable roster being core to success). You do have to wonder how they could perform so badly when they have been at the finals of Majors.

My main issue with Navi is that they have literally only won two recent tournaments and nothing else for two years. Even qualifying for a major is an achievement IMO, and yes - I think there is some Dendi/Navi Fanboy bias there. When you go as far as getting a guy to dress up in a costume just to get him into an All Star Game when his team didnt even qualify for last year's TI, its clear to all. I feel that the Navi direct invite was a complete waste, likely complete fan service and statistically only defendable due to winning two relatively lower level (in comparison to Majors) recent tournaments.

tournament isn't over people already making assumptions all over the shop.

Stay dumbo DotaGAF

This TI is only concerned about the past few months/year.

Bringing in form about 2 years ago is a bit dumb dumb

This is dumber than the post in poligaf

So explain why is it dumb?

here's what I think should happen. Valve has already addressed the fact there is too much team instability and too many majors. This is why they're scaling back to three majors (including TI7) and specific team movement windows (for "leavers" and "joiners"). I think they should have global rankings and regional rankings for tiered tournaments on a points system for all four regions. Have that ranking system consider the results and earnings of the teams for that past calendar year (so to actually reward consistent high placings).

When it comes to a Major, the top 1 or 2 teams then get an automatic invite because of recorded, legitimate achievement over the past year. Then have the rest of the teams in the regional top 8s go onto regional qualifiers and two placings for open qualifiers. Publish the rankings and show movement. Give actual statistical justification for each direct invite. That way there is more legitimacy for it.

You're talking about results from 2 years ago as relevant in a game where teams Last 6 months on average and a lot of players fade out or rise in less than 1 year.

TNC has chance to reach LB3 if they face MVP. MVP, most of the time, tilts against SEA teams. They can even reach LB4 if the awful-version of Wings showed up.

In Demon I trust.
