No Man's Sky - Early Impressions/Reviews-in-progress Thread

I'm pretty glad that I have no idea who this Jim person is. Internet personalities and the cult that grows up around them are something I'll never understand.

It's weird. But what's even more insane is basing your purchases off some other persons opinion. Or taking their word as gospel.

I wouldnt like to presume his thoughts too much, as I said, really love the guy and listen to almost all his podcasts, but If i had to guess it was the whole "hype" around it, the ridiculous expectations partially created by Sony, and the troubled development. He and Laura joked a lot about the game never coming out.

Ah this is the backstory? Yeah, I dunno if that qualifies as proof of anything. I figured you meant there were several occasions of the dude speaking cynically about it before release.

From those that are playing the game, could they have easily made this game into a huge MMO style environment with enormous server space for interactions?

Playing it now and on my 3rd planet. Very cool game now but still early days obviously, the sense of scale is bang on imo and I can't wait to shit like blackholes. Saying that, there is a lot of downtime in the game which wont please everyone. If you're on the fence, definitely just wait for the next update and for the game to be worked out more so that we can understand the true variety before jumping in.

you can actually do that?! okay, that does it! i'm in! :) ...

I mean, Jim usually tries to stir the pot for obvious reasons. It's kinda his schtick

this. & it does indeed get very old very, very fast :) ...

Love him too, but yeah, when I saw this tweet, I figured it might be something like that:

Yeah, Jim, pretty much. But I mean, that's fine, opinions and all. Still agree with the dude most of the time.

Is it possible to have previewed so many shitty steam greenlight survival games for the LOLs that you can no longer decern a good one from a bad one?

Serious though, I can totally see how NMS is not for everyone. Exploration is its own reward, and there's survival and crafting aspects in a space game. A good chunk of people expecting instant and clear reward loops aren't going to like that. Instead of verring off the star map path, they'll b-line it for the center.

Definitely a game for those who really like to explore. Not for me really. I need more depth and reason. That's okay though.

After watching Jim's impressions, it was exactly what I guessed. It is boring, repetitive and nothing much to do pass the first few of hours.

He also sounds extremely bored. Subnautica seems far better than this, excluding the different planets and space travel.

Maybe when it hits under $20 I will pick it up if there is nothing else to play.

I mean, sure, but it would then take away from the core premise, of the loneliness, survival, discovery, etc..

An opinion can be presented with sound reasoning and argumentation. It's weird if people just accept things on authority.

I wanna see the steam reviews once the game launches later. I delight in seeing the irony of people not recommending it and still having spent like 400+ hours playing the damn thing.

I always love his discussions about the industry as a whole, but this guy is almost always off-base with his reviews. He enjoys being overly critical and cynical, which is great for provoking discussion, but terrible for writing reviews.
I still shudder when I recall his review of the Witcher 2...

I don't think it's something 'easily made' though ^^;

Good points. I'm just wondering if the foundation is there to do something like this. Maybe ownership over certain planets in certain systems. and battles to protect those planets? Some really cool concepts could be spawned from this foundation.

Dude, this is single player EVE with some extra bits. It's amazing really.

I'm sure it is, but this is the kind of game I would get completely LOST in. I really like a good story/narrative to follow along with really good characters. I would literally lose all of my gaming time playing this game, just flying around into nowhere, lol.

Honestly, I'll always feel like Jim is a kindred spirit after how much Aliens: Colonial Marines let him down and then all the shit with Randy Pitchford after.

Me too, Jim...me too.

To be honest, I don't think this game is for me, I know I'd get bored and feel instant regret if I bought it.

But that Jim Sterling does seem to go over the top. Like when he summed up Black Ops 3 by saying
it’s just another condom of a game to be spunked into and thrown in the trash.

I mean damn, why talk like that. As someone said he almost seems to do things to provoke a reaction.

Yuuuuup. I think we know where this one is going.

I understand where Jim is coming from, but unlike him I haven't played a metric ton of shitty early access FPS crafting survival games, so NMS will still be a new and exhilarating experience for me. Sony and Hello Games probably should've communicated better about what the final game was going to be like so their would be less responses like Jim's.

Just google Jim, it's the third result.

he absolutely does that, doesn't mean it's not his honest opinion.

I'm sorry but...

lmao.

Sure. The werent any delays, no floods that destroyed their studio, twice, no Sky lawsuit, no Superformula stuff. I love the game and cant wait to play it Friday, but come on, man.

There was one delay and (iirc) the Sky trademark and Superformula stuff didn't hinder development.

I agree with him more often than not. Very tired of much of the bullshit that surrounds this industry, and it takes a really special or good game to take me out of my cynism. No Man Sky is one of them. Cannot wait for Friday.

I'm having a very hard time deciding on pulling the trigger on a purchase. One part of me wants to experience this, while the other part of me knows that I will not enjoy a game that is built around constant crafting. I could see this getting very old very quickly. Man... what to do...

I mean, Jim usually tries to stir the pot for obvious reasons. It's kinda his schtick

Lol wait... you're telling me Sterling's still... relevant?

I see we're now in the, "discredit contrarian opinions" phase of the Review thread.

LOL, It's okay if someone doesn't like the game.

I can't wait to play it myself as I'm in it for the Euro Truck Simulator in Space vibe. But man, I hate when dissenting opinions are character assassinated.

Watched Jim's short video preview and his complaints were completely justified in a "not every game is for every gamer" kind of way. That's just how it goes, and if you're not in it for the exploration & discovery, it's not going to be a game for you.

And that's...okay.

I watched some streams and such and nothing really grabbed me. I do not like the quitillon planets that are computer generated where I will only see 1% of them. Would rather some finely crafted planets with surprises and good exploration. I am sure it was a great feat to do that many planets but it seems like it is a bullet point.

The crafting is fine and upgrading your ship is great but the game seems sterile. The combat also seems really poor on land and in space.

After a few hours it seems like the same again and again. I am not a fan of GB but I will look at their vid to see how they are playing it.

The PS4 pop in/fade in is just terrible. I don't think I have seen that bad since the N64 days. Things fade in a couple feet ahead. The PC version will be better but damn it looks bad.

Riding dinosaurs was an expectation?

The marketing for NMS for the longest time has been vague, so perhaps he was expecting you to at least be able to interact with some of the wildlife on a deeper level than clipping through it. If I had to guess he probably didn't think their was dedicated riding of animals, but he at least thought you could stand on one.

From what is worth, its not really much hyperbole in saying that the day one patch really transformed the game. Dogfights seemed much more intense, and the combat more lethal. Also, the pop in got way, way less than before.

I am sorry but I havent been keeping up with latest news. Can we adjust the FOV? If not is it something planned to be updated in the future?

Fair enough. Personally I kind of expected the game to have some gamey ass jank though considering AAA titles that render a limited, handcrafted world also have weird shit like this.

even those jank deep shadows games had a decent NPC range.

this just looks like a colossally dull slog. 18 billion things to do and none of them mechanically interesting or rewarding.

I agree with him on the industry bullshit.

But I can't say his game preferences (thus reviews) totally align with mine. But as a kindrid survival horror fan that hasn't got anything good since Alien Isolation, I get the cynicism.

Yep, he has being doing it for years. I like him and rather enjoy his take on industry happenings sometimes, but can't stand how he always goes out of his way to be 'that guy' with the bullhorn on the other end of the review spectrum.

Now as far as No Man's Sky goes, I can see how you might come away feeling like it is kind of a chore if you don't like the core structure of a sim that is based around being a spacefarer. I mean, discovering worlds both barren and flourishing, long treks, discovering life, resource gathering, alien artifacts and space battles is what it's all about here. But a universe made of cardboard? Come on. The atmosphere, sound and style are all outstanding.

I feel the same.

Yet I still want to buy it to try it myself lol. It just looks like one of those games I want to at least experience, but not at $60.

I can probably pick it up in a year when it hits rock bottom on a PSN sale and will likely be a much improved experience after the patches.
