Elden Ring Nightreign - Reviews Thread

As much as I love From & ER, this just isn't for me. I'm quite certain it will develop a loyal following for those that enjoy this type of gameplay, but to me this game comes off like a calculated placeholder to fill a gap in the release schedule while using minimal resources, something built to keep the brand active until ER2 or whatever the next big game is.

So playing solo is basically hard mode.
I thought trying to get people to work together and stay together was hard mode.

This game is just low effort tbh. This is a cash grab and low quality in every single way. Reused assets all over the place and reused bosses for crying out loud. This game didn't need to exist, and only exists because they wanna keep milking the elden ring cash cow.

always been anti this bullshit

has nothing to do with reviews or not

fromsoftware was my baby

yes, MY baby

now it's like my step father i never wished to have who repeatably beats me (Elden Ring, AC6, back to back Elden Ring DLCs) over and over and over again. I can't catch a fucking break

"The very core idea behind the conception of Elden Ring: Night Reign is flawed; loop-based games like roguelikes completely break the magic of FromSoftware's formula. It feels like a bundle of mods that quickly loses its charm due to repetitiveness—and that's if you're playing with someone who knows what they're doing; if not, the experience gets much worse."

Completely agree
This was exactly why Elden Ring never clicked with me, and why ive spent the last 3 years baffled by why it became so successful. To me souls games were defined by their interconnecting level designs, and metroidvania style levels. When they went open world with elden ring, the gameplay loop just kind of went stale. My friends told me to go do some castle levels and they all felt like they were cobbled together without much thought. At least when compared to dark souls 1, 3 and bloodborne. It felt like DS2, only worse. I guess bosses and combat was a huge draw for others but i was always a fan of the level design in these games.

Thats the scope of the game. Reused assets and NPCs to create an online game.

It makes sense for console players. Elden Ring co-op mod I had a blast with. This is a more streamlined and randomized version of what you can mostly already get with mods. Now console players can enjoy that too, only at a cost.

"....there is technically a singleplayer option but it`s so poorly balanced .....the bosses are definitely designed with multiple players in mind....."

aaaand I´m finally definitely out.
Yeah. I thought this would happen. You have to be crazy good to play singleplayer. I am not shocked.

The focus on co-op and a strict class system killed my interest (since most of my friends planning to buy this are on xbox and theres no crossplay, sooo…)

Holy shit, Oro says solo runs are insanely difficult and really only fit for people who do brutal challenge runs like SL1. Only when you're really, really, REALLY good at PVE should you ever attempt to play this game solo. He wouldn't recommend anyone to play this solo at all, it is too difficult and not balanced.

This sucks.

Sounds like every other roguelite.

Let's get the most important caveat out of the way first: If you are hoping to tackle Nightreign entirely solo, and are anything less than a hardcore Elden Ring player that actively seeks out ways to make that already difficult game even more challenging, Nightreign isn't for you.

Watched the Iron Pineaple review and my takeaway is that it seems like a fun game to pick up with some friends when it's like $20.
From the review it seems that it can be fun for a while, but the main issue is a lack of variety. Runs don't take long to get samey and most of the upgrades don't do enough to change up the gameplay. All of it means that it can be fun until you've played through all the bosses and content once, which he says should take between 15-20 hours, but there's not much to keep you playing after seeing the credits.

Yeah the responses to solo are way more savage than I was expecting.

Nothing that can't be fixed with balance patches, but oof.. Rough ride.

So you basically described every game ever created.

....How does this look like a flop? Lmao. Any experiment netting positive is a win rather than a loss. Hell, even if it broke even, that's better than a loss. I'm sure they didn't expect this to blow everyone away. It's why it's priced the way it is. It's a very odd experiment for them through and through.

Not really, because this is a roguelite.
A roguelite that stops being fun after you've beaten every boss once isn't a particularly good roguelite. The whole concept of having a limited amount of content and focusing on "runs" where you play through the same content again and again only works if you have well designed mechanics that keep each run feeling unique.

I could see this being a "fun experiment" if they had a proper game on the horizon.
Instead the only other game they have announced is some other multiplayer only GAAS looking crap that sounds even less appealing than this one.

I'm interested in the game mostly due to the classes and their movesets, but idk if I'm gonna be day 1 if solo is horribly balanced..

This game isn't meant to be played solo... I see the solo mode as an extra for those who dare to try it.

You can't include a solo mode, specifically say you're including a solo mode and then go "well yeah the mode is dogshit but that's what you get, you're not supposed to play solo".

I don't even know what the point of this game is. If I'm understanding this correctly, it's a co-op Elden Ring? A game which was already co-op?
Yeah, same. It's a conundrum to me, I have 431 hours in ED and have tried to understand Nightreign, but I still don't get it..

Lmao this game isn't GaaS.

Sure it features roguelike gameplay with a focus on missions. But it's not a live service game with continuous updates, expansions, or a free-to-play model. I don't think they have plans to make it one either. Did some of you forget what an actual GaaS is?
