is that dark marowak real?
Yes, it's Fire/Ghost.
The leak said it was an evolution, though. The real deal appears to be a form change.that school of fish was a weird guess to get right tho.
What was this dex leak you're all referring to?
If we are going back to 151 regional dex I'm hoping most of the older gen moms have type changes just to make that part of the Pokedex more interesting, and hope they keep doing that as they make more games. Just hoping it's not just gen 1. XY was enough of a nostalgia/pandering circle jerk.
At this point, I'm assuming that all Alolan forms are going to be from Gen I.
Well yeah, it's the 20th anniversary for Gen 1. This sets up regional variants for each Gen on their anniversary years. Really cool way to celebrate that milestone.

Here's the problem- you introduce an Alola form of say, a Gen IV pokemon - a good portion of the audience (who's not watching trailers and tuned in) will see it, and not realize it's a variant. They're going with well-known popular Pokemon (aka Gen 1) for the gimmick because the gimmick requires prior knowledge in order to work.
It's the 20th anniversary for Pokemon as a series, not just the original games. That aside, not only did it have Pokemon Go launch with the original 151, but they also re-released Red/Green/Blue/Yellow on Virtual Console and streamed Pokemon The First Movie online. We're good for the first generation fan service, it's time to give the other six generations that came afterwards a fair shake with the Alola forms.

I really want to know how the form change is triggered!

The gimmick doesn't work nearly as well without the nostalgia element.this is like
literally the dumbest 'problem' i've heard of.
1) It's easy to put some kind of notifier in the Dex that they are a variant.
2) The gimmick works regardless because the gimmick is that they have adapted to new environments and gained types/abilities/stats.

Correct. The goal is to minimize the number of people for whom this is the case. When they catch it and it says Roserade (Alolan) they'll realize it's a variant.
Don;t forget that for a lot of kids, Pokemon Sun/Moon will be their first time seeing a lot of Gen 1 Pokemon. It's entirely possible that they'll think Alolan Vulpix is a normal Vulpix until they catch it.
I think that's happening, given the Ice/Fairy alternate form.Fire/Fairy Ninetales would be great.

I gotta give props for that fake Pokémon list having believable English names.
Ask random casual players to name Gen V pokemon outside of the starters.Yes it does????
Plus almost every Gen except VI is old enough to have nostalgic attachment? It's been half a decade since Gen V first dropped.
Ask random casual players to name Gen V pokemon outside of the starters.
They're not going to be able to. How do I know this? I'm one of them.

Gen 1's still the one with the greatest saturation, thus, the one you start with if doing this type of gimmick that keys off of Nostalgia.Random casual players include more people than just gen wunners

100%. I also didn't play Gen 4. Played Gen 1/2/3 and jumped back in with X/Y.So you admit you haven't even played Gen V, then? And therefore not only have no reason to know Gen V, but don't even care about Gens outside the first?
Regardless of these opinions, Gen VII is looking great. The least memorable design so far has been the fish, but it's school form more than makes up for it. It's like Dugtrio, but creative. And I love Dugtrio. Everything else is tops.
Correct. It's that an Ice Vuplix excites a player a billion times more if they have the original as a reference.EDIT: Oh wait, this was still about Delta types? I mean, maybe it's like that from a Gewunner perspective, but the people that actually play the games'll still get hype to see alternate forms of Pangoro or Talonflame. And people that don't still have Gen 1 Deltas to fall back on, while, say, a Poison/Ice Delta Goodra is just something cool/new.
I dunno; I doubt anyone's this shallow or proudly ignorant.100%. I also didn't play Gen 4. Played Gen 1/2/3 and jumped back in with X/Y.
People skip generations. This is why they'll always be keying heavily off Gen 1 in one way or another during a generation.

If someone's never seen the Pokemon before, that moment is lost.

Side-note: Why hasn't Game Freak released Gold/Silver/Crystal on the Virtual Console? I want to give you money to play that without worrying about battery issues, stop preventing me from doing that!
???
They didn't need to do that when they revealed Megas, which gave less popular Pokemon like Mawile and Kangaskhan new forms in addition to some of the more popular Pokemon to come from the second through six generations without any confusion, not to mention that not all Gen I Pokemon are particularly popular. Or are you telling me that Exeggutor is somehow more recognizable than any of the later starters, Lucario, or various other widely recognized Gen II-VI Pokemon? They made it pretty clear in the original trailer, through both a comparison between the old and new forms' different aesthetics and the unique typing and ability they were given, that this was a variation of a previous Pokemon. Also, i'm pretty sure that the audience they're aiming for is children and not 20-something folks like myself who've been playing the games since they first got their hands on a GameBoy, children who've likely watched or at least heard of the anime that has focused on the most recent generation of creatures aside from Pikachu.
kirblar is kind of right, though. Gen 1 Pokemon have the double advantage of having had 20 years of exposure and having featured in the best-selling games in the series that really encapsulated Pokemon as a cultural phenomenon. If Gamefreak wants to test the waters on subspecies, it makes sense they'd do it primarily with 1st gen 'mons. It worked that way with Megas, too - well over a third of XY's Megas were Gen 1, despite Gen 1 being less than a fifth of all Pokemon. The non-Gen 1 Megas also fitted the pattern of being highly marketable Pokemon like Lucario and Blaziken. The more obscure Megas didn't emerge until ORAS when they were confident from XY there was leg room in the idea.
Note that kirblar isn't saying Gen 1 designs are better or anything. He's just pointing out they have way more cultural punching power than the average Pokemon from later generations. My mum could pick out Jigglypuff, Squirtle and Pikachu from a line-up and she has absolutely no interest in Pokemon. She sure as heck can't do Swirlix.
It looks like there's going to be a Pokedex for each island. If it's similar to each of Kalos' dexes, then the whole Regional Dex would be around 600.
Wait, what? This was hinted at already???
its the 20th anniversary, no?
well there you go
