The International 2016 (Aug 3rd - 13th)

I've watched TI4, TI5 and now TI6. I love watching Dota. I'm a SC2 player and played League for a bit. If I want to finally start playing Dota, what the hell do I do? Seems so over whelming.

Advice?

The guide is a little old but this covers most of what you need to know.

Read the guide, read the dota wiki and then fuck around with heroes in bot games until you get a feel for the game and find heroes that fit your playstyle.
Second this, but the guide isn't that old. I think it was updated maybe a year ago? I know since then some quality of life options have been added such as holding alt to see tower ranges and jungle spawn boxes.

I would also say don't be afraid to jump into unranked matchmaking. You'll see people calling you or each other noob or saying whatever item/skill build you are doing is terrible, but there is a high chance that what they are doing is just as bad if not worse. You can mute those people, as you will be matched with people at your skill level, so it is unlikely they have any great insight or know much better than you what they are doing.

You may run into the nice teammate though, and definitely consider what they say.

Don't sweat the small stuff at first.

The basics of the game are super simple, the nuance and complexity comes with time and experience.

What matters starting out is if you are the kind of person who can have fun being bad at something, which you will be for a substantial amount of time.

I mean I'm shit at basketball, but a pickup game at the park or a game of horse can be perfectly enjoyable.

Let's go DC

But seriously FUCK illusion strats. If there's one fundamental change I'd like to see in Dota 2, it'd be to catapult illusion strats into the sun.

This is nowhere close to the worst it has been. Illusion strats are fine in moderation, which is what is happening here. You just have to know how to deal with them, drafting, itemizing, strategy, etc.

Nah it's not that I think it's OP or cheap or anything like that. It's not invincible it's just boring as fuck watching teams refuse to commit, just choke the other one out.

I prefer bloodbath heavy metal slugfest dota >:)

That's just Dota, and the game is in a good place right now. So many strats are viable and every game isn't the same. There are very few "staple" heroes this patch compared to previous patches. If I recall correctly, this was the first TI main event where Huskar got picked.

We have seen a lot of strats here, even pub cheese (which flopped horribly for MVP Phoenix, but I think due to execution).

He's just rambly and a bit incoherent so LD has to constantly interrupt him, and then he just tapers off repeating the last word he said

It just sounds like he's trying to impress a girl at a bar with a boring ass story and his cool friend LD keeps interrupting him, and it's sort of triggering me. I feel for him, though, hope someone on production can atleast get him a bottle of water.

I got you fam

Edit: beaten like arteezy

Best advice is to not go it alone. Find a friend who already knows how to play it and ask him to show you the ropes. Be prepared for a *steep* learning curve (maybe not as bad if you've played SC2 and League before).

Also visit yourfriendly neighborhood NeoGAF Dota OT thread and say hi. I'm sure you'll find someone that's in your timezone that will be willing to teach you.

Thanks!

showing once again how bad he is

LGD don't do enough dmg while in their BKBs, they need more than just one kill, meanwhile DC just need theirs to survive until the duration wears off and they can starfall them down.
