A polite discourse amongst friends on the importance of MP-elements in No Man's Sky

Either it's a technical issue or a cut feature late in development to save resources.

From both possibilities, it's really not a big deal.

For me its said "you have been disconnected from the network" all day, however I have still been able to upload discoveries.

Since the game can be played offline that feature most likely acts the same so you can still get credits. I would imagine if designed properly it queues up those calls to be synced with the next valid connection.

Nice spoiler title.

I also hate knowing if a game is multiplayer or single player before I buy it. I like to be organically surprised while playing it.

Some of you guys are really getting all worked up for fucking everything.

I thought it would be incredibly unlikely occurrence? It happened within hours of release.

I personally took his word that it would be incredibly unlikely, since that was the most consistent message, so I never went in expecting any kind of player interaction but it's still kind of rediculous that it
almost
happened day one.

This game is turning into a whole lot of meh and broken promises by the sounds of things

Yeah the lack of part is true, but features definitely are spoilers.

Or would you like to see a thread about Journey on release day with a title "hey there's other people in this game!".

No.

uh.

This is very dissapointing, the Most exciting thing for me in this game was the possibility to actually find Another player in the universe, arter maybe years of exploring. Hmm

That's the impression I get as well (and not just regarding the topic in this thread) and it's confusing me at the moment. My Limited Edition copy is going to arrive today and I'm not sure if I'm going to be happy with this game (keeping in mind that it would cost me 80€).

I'm torn between giving it a go anyway or just sending it back, possibly picking it up later after some reviews are out. I'm kind of hesitant going to any threads and reading opinions because I wanted to know as little as possible about the game.

However what I seem to understand is that people's opinions on this game are all over the place.

I'm of the opinion they should charged less. Witg a certain price tag comes certain expectations.

The PSN Store page for the game says Single Player

That's all you really need to know. You are getting what is advertised.
HOLY FUCK THEY CHANGED IT WITHIN THE LAST COUPLE WEEKS

I was attacked for saying the same but it had "Multi-player (Optional)" under the "Duals hock 4" and I didn't notice it. But now it is simply GONE!

Someone likely got wind of that thread and had it removed!

Here:

The developer wanted way too much to say as little about the game as possible... to the point that it has created a lot of confusion and mis-conception. If people are expecting a multiplayer experience of any form, other than uploading/downloading names of things from a server, they are in for a harsh surprise.

Journey PS4 - "Online Play (Optional)"

Dark Souls 3 PS4 - "1 Player / Network Players 2-6"

Bloodborne - "Online Play (Optional)"

No Man's Sky - "1 Player"

THIS GAME HAS NO MULTIPLAYER. PERIOD.

Ooh, all caps. I'm convinced.
Oh yeah and you didn't paste the whole thing:

Online Play (Optional)

You left out the part where it says "Online Play (Optional)

Why are you intentionally ignoring the fact that it says "Online Play(Optional)" for NMS as well?

Amazing... could not be bothered to read past the first point.

Look again...

I don't see anything about broken promises and I see a whole lot of whining about nothing.

They initially said there would be a limited MP, like Journey's ghosting effect, back when they first introduced the game, but they have backtracked on that over the past year or so to the point where Sean posted this past weekend that it's simply NOT a Multiplayer game.

Anyone who has been following the game since it's first reveal knows that they have been backing off from any form of Multiplayer since they first suggested it.

People complaining about it now made assumptions before checking up on the latest tweets and reports.
They also compared it to Watch Dogs and Destiny which suggested actual multiplayer. This was all done when hype was at an all time high. If they quietly retracted those statements two days before launch, that's just as shady as lying.

Yeah to be fair this whole issue is because of Sean's responses.

When asked if someone could encounter another player he shouldn't have replied with:

To the majority of people that implies that people won't meet due to the sheer size of the universe as opposed to because the functionality is not there.

That was a perfect opportunity to simply say it wasn't something they had implemented at this point in time.

Now not only will he have to come out with a clear answer as to whether that is a feature of the game, but there will be questions asked as to how large the universe really is.....

ALSO take a look at the date of the tweet? Surely he knew if online multiplayer in that regard was implemented?!

I think he straight up misinformed (lied to?) his audience here. Considering he did the programming behind the game, he should know if its possible for two people to meet up. I hope he can clarify his previous comments. Perhaps the people attempting the meet up were not in the same galaxy or timeline (terrible answer though) or whatever.

The issue I have is that he sold the game on hype, the minute possibility of meeting up in a universe, im pretty sure got people excited in attempting such a (literally) impossible feat.

As gamers, we probably should have questioned if that was even possible at all. Imagine millions of gamers all logging on and trying to find each other. How many games do that now? It would have been highly unlikely for a small indie team to code and manage that. Even a much bigger studio like Evolution who made Driveclub struggled for months getting connections to stick for their game. NMS multiplayer if I were to hazard a guess boils down to some sort of database in the background logging locations and names and things found so that these discoveries will pop up in other people's games. Aside from that there probably isn't any live multiplayer gameplay. This is probably going to be a pretty big backlash for Hello Games to deal with and I think they're going to have to be careful with their messaging.

I'm not an idiot, so I guess I wouldn't think that was a spoiler.

See ya.

Features are not spoilers. Knowing a game has multiplayer or a different mode is not a spoiler.

I can see your point. But all games are not the same. I would say Journey would've been a lesser game if I knew it had multiplayer before playing. I would argue that the game was designed that way too.

But yeah, I didn't want to derail the thread sorry.

I'm of the opinion they should charged less. Witg a certain price tag comes certain expectations.

I agree but it's not about the expectations I had/have. I just want that the stuff that is there (which is already more than I expected for a long time, lots of stuff that I only know exists but didn't read more than a headline on) to be good. I don't seem to get the impression that the majority thinks that it is good. It's very very mixed so far.

I don't see anything about broken promises and I see a whole lot of whining about nothing.

Regarding this thread, I guess. And I got to admit that I'm with the complainers. Over the last couple of years I've seen and read many of Sean's interviews and he made it seem like you could meet other players which to me was exciting.

But apart from that whole topic, is the game actually.. fun? Cause as long as it is I wouldn't mind. However it's so hard to get some kind of consensus so early on and without reading too much which is why I'm having such a hard time making a decision.

If I had to guess, it's a feature they had intended to have in the game, but couldn't get it in without delaying the release. So the decided to release it without, hoping to quietly patch it in maybe in 6 month. But didn't want the bad PR so they emphasize how "incredibly unlikely" it is to happen so that they don't get questioned on it not happening in the first 6 month.

It sounds like it still may be possible at least from some of the post I saw in the Official thread. I wouldn't be surprised if something is going on with the servers or something like that which is causing people to not meet yet. If it isn't and they went back on this than that is disappointing but until I see more info one way or another I am not going to jump the gun.

It thats true boy did the miss the mark or this PR disaster
lol wow, PR disaster is an overblown response.

Some of you guys are really getting all worked up for fucking everything. I mean it's not ideal but 30+ pages for a thing that isn't even remotely the focus of this game, jesus.

It's a sandbox game. Once it's out in the wild you cannot control how people choose to experience it. If a bunch of players get together on a forum and decide to map out the entire universe and share it with the world and all hang out on the same handful of planets, it will happen. Because the Internet.

Giving people the tools to do anything but then saying "but seriously, don't do THIS thing", was never a realistic way to approach the launch.

https://twitter.com/NoMansSky/status/762688708764135425

I mean Sean says it pretty clearly right there guys....not sure what the big deal is here lol

He's also said the exact opposite on numerous other occasions (multiple interviews and gifs posted in this very thread), and also said that it doesn't matter because it's not the focus later on in that same twitter thread.

The fact that you have people convinced that a) multi exists, it's just not in yet, b) multi exists, it's just instances, or c) no multi exists at all and they never promised it, in a topic meant to clarify the subject, means that Hello Games has really managed to mix their messaging.

If finding another player was like winning the lottery, it would make the game so much more exciting.

Wouldn't it be cool if months (or years!) from now, news came out that two players had finally found each other?

The game feels dead without that drive to defy the odds.
