People keep pulling the "it's not a multiplayer game" tweet like a trump card when he's said stuff like that all along. What he means with that is it's not a game like CoD or Destiny or Minecraft where you can just straight up join servers/matches/friends games and instantly connect and fight and do sandboxy stuff. There are a bunch of interviews where he straight up says stuff like "yes, you can see other players" and even interviews where he explains what he means by it and how it's not like CoD or Destiny because they didn't want it to be like that, they wanted it to be more like Journey.

I didn't work on the game I certainly do not know the specifics.
If they're wildly out of sync considering how the game works they're not going to interact, that's the only certitude we have.
I can't believe they wouldn't have tested this feature and do not have test cases to know when it could and couldn't work.
As far as I can tell from what little I could follow they were never clear about multiplayer (more along the line of hope that it could be possible but never making an oath either) and clearly showed that there would be interactions.
If people can see creatures and planet renamed by other players, they already delivered on their promise.

There's a multiplayer component in the game (mainly naming things in the universe), there is not realtime palyer interaction. He clearly stated that realtime online player interaction was not possible at this stage.
I can link you to the videos where, asked a direct question, said that there was not such a thing. In the pre-release thread I had people saying that he stated repeatedly that online interaction was confirmed by Sean in response to those videos. People want to believe what they want and then get disappointed when they cannot have it.

Haha you can kinda tell from the interviews that he knew it didn't work at all and never would and he hoped that kind of blowing it off by saying it was really unlikely would just get people off his back about it while also being marketing for the game (both the possibility of meeting others and just touting how huge the universe is and thus how you shouldn't be disappointed when it doesn't happen -- it's because the game is so amazingly huge not because they didn't bother to put it in don't worry). But it just sounds so halfhearted.

I think the combination of day one review embargo, day one patch, "devs sleeping", and players breaking the game in the first week have all contributed to this. At this point I just want a clear statement in the AM.
As in, "Multi is in. It's instanced."
Or, "Multi is not in. We're working on it."
Not, "Multi might be in or it might not. Why do you care? It's not like you'll see anyone anytime soon. Enjoy the view *shrug emoji*"
As much as they're trying to market it as this magical experience it still has to pass ESRB cert and be reviewed as a tangible product.

The stranger thing to me is that two friends were able to go to same planet on Day 1 of the release. I thought the Universe in this game was supposed to be so big that it would take longer than the first day it's out?

Maybe they were hoping people wouldn't find each other so quickly and they'd have time to latch in working MP? It does seem very quick to have people get to the same planet out of squillions on day one.
Also the instances thing is a poor excuse. Yes you'll have people instanced for load reasons. But the area is so vast you are very unlikely to have more than a handful in the same location. So you'd think they would be able to switch people into the same instance if they get near to another person.
If they really have a destiny/dark souls approach where you can only see some people that are in your area then the scale of the universe makes that so unlikely as to be practically impossible. Destiny/souls have small worlds with a lot of players in the same locations so even with instancing you have enough of a population to feel connected.

Both possibilties. We just don't know. What we DO know with 99.99999999% certainty is that there is not a universe full of 18 quintillion planets upon which new players just spawn randomly.
But then why even bother with a multiplayer component if the chances are so minute. If meeting is so remote, I doubt they want to spend time and effort coding it up and having network servers up for people to run around in.
Chances are multiplayer is not in, and there was a lot of dodging and misleading information before release.

I did. I actually thought it would be something impossible in the beginning but rather more possible in the later parts of the game the closer you'd get to the center.

Sean has talked about players being their own "lobby" in which a limited number of other players can share a (brief?) experience. Sort of like a server or instance. He never specified what determines inclusion in one's lobby afaik.
The weirder issue here is not that players might have been instanced from each other, but that they were in the same place at all on day one. If what we "know" about the size of the universe is true, there is almost literally no way these players could have been in the same spot within a month of constant playing much less on day one.

They've never said that there are 18 quintillion planets in the galaxy. They said that since they are working in a 64 bit system, their software can create 18 quintillion unique planets. It's the upper limit of unique variations -- Minecraft's unique world generation has the same limit.
There might be a thousand, a million, a billion, a trillion, etc. planets in the galaxy. I don't think they've mentioned it.

Don't know what to expect besides: We thought about it, we wanted to d it, but it's too expansive and time consuming, obviously d'oh. We of course knew that from the beginning, but we still wanted the hype to be as high as possible so we decided to correct the mp statement two days before launch because pre orders and fu.
Wow that's a blatant lie. Did he even later issue a statement to say, oh by the way, sorry guys but this feature got canned?

The eagerness of people who want to dismiss the game because of these things is also off-putting. Both mindsets just shove others into stupid camps that primarily exist to oppose each other. The actual thing being discussed is just a source of ammunition.
This can be a good game even if Sean and HG fucked up. It can also be a flawed game even if Sean and HG made something really fucking cool.
I am looking forward to seeing what the Sean says.
