I thought this was known for this game. Everything leading up to it has seemed like exactly this.

Yeah thats kind of my point, people are buying it expecting something else, and then posting shit about it because it wasnt what they wanted. It has loads of flaws and isnt the perfect game, but that was OBVIOUS from all the way through the dev cycle.

5 out of 10 is average to me. Not mediocre

It's using a scale like that which is why a game getting a 7 is deemed as hot garbage, and only a 9 constitutes a good game.

And just remember, there's a huge selection bias in games. Shitty games don't get reviewed nearly as often as quality games, and there's a LOT of shitty games out there.

I dont know why you bought this game if it didnt seem like something you would like. From everything we have been shown up to the point it came out, it was obvious what it would be. It seems like you bought it hoping it would be something else, and are unhappy that it wasnt.

Anyway, pointless talking further, thats what the ignore function is for after all.

If you had read the previous conversation you'd know I didn't purchase the game which is completely beside the point in the first place. Why do you reply to something you didn't actually read properly in such an obnoxious fashion?

I for one love the game and it is pretty much everything (other than not as hard) I expected and wanted out of it. And I gotta say in hindsight I like that it isn't as hard and can be a relax game. Even the simple flying where you can't hit things. I hated the idea when I heard of it but like it now. Though I really wish they would let you fly closer to the ground. For one thing it would be easier to land right where I want if I could get lower and see where I'm wanting to be.

Honestly I concur with some one else, the game plays as it was described overall so I suspect those who thought it would be boring will find it such and those who didn't hype it up to be something different will enjoy it (who got an accurate idea of gameplay which yes, you could get from what was stated about the game before. As I said other than easier it is what I expected out of the gameplay).

(Disclaimer I'm only in my second system but I've been playing it all day since I got it yesterday and have had a hard time putting it down and honestly I'm thinking even if planets are kinda samey that's not the biggest allure to me.

they mean the same thing?

Mediocre means average though

Yes technically medicore refers to middle.

But for me it has a much more negative connotation, and is often used to describe something below average.

If you focus on the actual context of the review it certainly reads as below average. It pretty much consistently follows a negative tone.

Holy shit....

I've explained why I said what I said. For me medicore is often used to refer to something bottom of the barrel, regardless of the actual meaning.

If you could fast travel to your ship, that ruins the whole danger and such of exploring. Look at the impressions of people on hazardous planets, and then imagine how boring it would be if you could call your ship to you or teleport to your ship

Then institute a mechanic where you can't fast travel if you're in danger like many other games have done. I want to be able to get lost on my own terms, not on the terms of some randomly generated number. The purpose here would be to mitigate boredom, not harrowing gameplay situations.

Some planets would have you "in danger" from the moment you land. The game is about exploration/resource gathering and any sort of fast travel mechanic completely negates that. It's just not the game for that.

I think that's fine, if the game made that explicit to you when you land on the planet. I just don't think the exploration and fast travel are mutually exclusive.

I'm absolutely loving my experience with the game so far. I don't think it's anywhere close to the grind level of a mobile game. Different strokes for different folks.

Same here, but on my headphones last night and just explored. Got jumped by bandits making a run to a space station and lost my haul though. Sublime. Just having fun exploring and talking to aliens and finding shit and exploring new planets. It's nice and I'm having fun. Such a different experience from so many games.

Serious question, how can you relax when everything you do needs a ton of resources?

Everything that needs life support or that I need to at least get Around in a star system it is easy to find resources for, for toxic planets I can just go near my ship and go back to it or a cave and my shield recharges. So never seeme there is much immediate concerns where I have to find something right now. I might change my mind if I meet more sentinels but I gotta say I like his method of getting rid of the sentinels over gta (rockstar should take notice. You can get rid of them by fighting back as long as you get rid of the ones who spotted you fast enough. I hate how in gta the only way to get rid of the cops is run). And honestly I kinda like inventory management, it's why I like weight limits in Bethesda games and part of why I like survival in Fallout (I like having to prioritize what I decide to carry. To me it's a strategy/puzzle game that's more free form about it).

Same as well. Have yet to leave my starting planet, even though I am more than ready. It is a harsh and hot one as well.

They kind of meet you half way with fast travel. If you've walked for ages and come across an outpost/building with a landing pad, you can call your ship to it with an easily crafted item.

This game is something that will split people up though.
It's pretty fitting it's 50/50 really. I haven't played yet, I'm hesitant, but excited.
Hopefully it'll be at my house later today and I can check it out!

When people mention this and Minecraft, besides the crafting and procedural exploration, they're not saying NMS is going to become Minecraft. But rather how Minecraft was massively expanded upon and while the original concept is still the same, the current game is much bigger, with huge expansions in mechanics and features, Sean and co plan to do the same wth No Man's Sky. Build upon the core concept and gameplay in major ways in the years to come.
How do you expect them to follow Minecraft in this though with years and years of updates? How will they sustain this level of support with the high price of their game compared to Minecraft? Minecrafts ability to fund years of free content and additions relied on the sheer volume of copies they were able to shift at a bargain price, something NMS doesn't have.

Just playing devils advocate I guess? I just don't see how it makes business sense for them to be supporting this game the way Minecraft was, which is why I'm a little confused where people keep saying this will follow a Minecraft related support structure

Not to discount Jim's experience but he basically plays shitty variants of these types of games for a living on his channel. So I'm sure his tolerance threshold for this type of game is rock bottom. Whereas a regular person isn't playing survival crafting games 24/7.

403 for me.

403 out of 404

Anywho. Jim's review seems perfectly reasonable and fair.

Jim clearly has a lower tolerance to a game making you spend time doing more-or-less "nothing". - and so will many people.
Meanwhile, for someone who uses games as a means of relaxation, and as "keeping my hands and mind busy while consuming other media" (tv shows, youtube videos, livestreams, podcasts) it suits my current needs very accurately.

And
is super on point - it's a 60$ game - if he thinks he's played it long enough to know that it won't get any better for him, posting the review is actually his responsibility. After all, right now, people are still caught in the hype cycle, with only some early impressions making people weary.
PC buyers are actually blessed that they're on forced delay and they'll have a chance for some trustworthy reviews to trickle in.

I could see this, I've never played something remotely like this. Never touched minecraft.

Or you could argue the opposite way, in that this game should've been his light in the dark, after playing so many shit copies

Not surprised by Jim's review after his impressions video.

I'm honestly feeling pretty similar about the game at around 3 hours in. I'm going to give it some more time, of course, but I'm already a little bored with it.

Reviewer says, it's basically an One-Trick-Pony that is able to wow you for the first 5 hours when you encounter news things but after that it's all routine. He played 40 hours and says he wished he stopped after 10.

edit: I will still buy it and play it in smaller doses. I don't think a review marathon is a good thing for this game.

Jim is the only person that my gaming tastes align, so I am glad that I didn't pre-ordered this game. I'll probably buy it next year when it's below 20 pounds.

I don't understand how Jim gives his review scores. PvZ GW 2 — 9.5, Unravel — 4, Battleborn — 8.5, Overwatch — 8.5... I like this guy, but his scores are so random sometimes.

Yep, same here. I share similar tastes with Jim in games.

How? They're his opinions.

Watching the ACG video has made me consider waiting for a sale or a patch. Even though the performance and FOV probably wouldn't apply to me as I will be playing on PC, the inventory and crafting along with the first 10 hours are a bummer for me. Guess I'll just hold out to see PC performance and impressions and maybe for further patches before jumping in.

However I currently have no games to play and the weather is very hit and miss here in the UK at the moment. At least the football starts this weekend..

I've never really paid much attention to this Sterling fella before, now I want to go on his website and see what games he rates highly to see if our tastes are similar. Only problem is his site is down :/

Edit: he gave Unravel only a 4? Well that's... I don't agree with that for a start haha.

Fuuuuuuuck

I was worried about this. It was my game of the life through hour 7, but it's reaaally started to fade and grate on me, was hoping there would be something new added to the gameplay loop.

He even took shit on We Happy Few for survival mechanics, justified tho because imbalanced, without holding punches back. One could really say that him playing bottom of barrel shit from games like this that are shoveled into Steam Greenlight is having affect. Still his review about NMS is his opinion and score on it, game did nothing for him. Nothing wrong with that.

Mass Effect 1 Side Missions: The Game.

I am loving the game but yes, this was exactly my impression as well. I loved uncharted worlds in 2007 and I'm getting those exact same vibes right now.

Going back to ME1 in 2016 the uncharted worlds seem kind of dated, so I see NMS like a modern-day version of that.

I agree with all those scores. PvZ GW2 is actually an amazing game with loads of varied content.

it looks like a hit or miss type of game, some people will love it to death and vice versa, from what I've seen from it, it's really mediocre and I'll wait for a huge sales to get it.

Or... He likes certain games, and doesn't like others?

He's got strong opinions that aren't easily pigeon-holed. Nothing wrong with that.

Those saying that all the planets are samey - have you travelled to other star systems? Are there like 'styles' to each star system? or are we saying from planet one to 'near the centre' there's little variation?

I'm on system 3 - they're pretty samey to be honest.

It didn't bother me til now, I'm on hour 8ish, it just starts to get a little old.
