A polite discourse amongst friends on the importance of MP-elements in No Man's Sky

The lead developer of No Mans Sky being criticized for using the twitter handle @NoMansSky is breathtakingly stupid.

How so? Game Development is team work - You work with a team to make projects that no single person in your team could've done on their own.

Would it have been okay for Cliffy to use the Gears of War handle to promote his own name? How would the rest of the super talented team feel about that? There's a certain arrogance there that wouldn't be cool with me.

As someone who was only slightly following the lead up to the release. I never felt this game was marketed as a multiplayer experience. Are there people who seriously expected an MMO type of game? Whenever I saw multiplayer/online mentioned, it always seemed to focus on just being able to name planets or star systems or whatever. It seemed like the sentiment of "the odds of seeing another player are slim to none" were hammered in enough for me to just ignore the possibility in the first place.

However, being able to see another player was mentioned enough, so that issue should be addressed.

So Sean Murray is the new Will Wright?

Will Wright made a shitton of groundbreaking games before Spore happened, though, and even still I have serious doubt it turned out shitty because of Wright. Making the game simpler and the presentation "cutesy" the way they did it screams of executive meddling by EA.

If Cliffy owns the majority of the GoW IP then sure he can use the handle.

Is this what we've come down too?

Shitstorm? What shitstorm?

If you guys bothered to look outside of this echo chamber of a thread you'd realise the only shitstorm is this thread itself.

Are you serious?

His twitter is definitely full of people who wants answers too

Has anyone in this thread actually attempted to meet someone else yet in the game?

Or is it just those two streamers everyone is talking about?

Yah, lets just coordinate a GAF meet up. Super simple. Ain't no party like a GAF party.

Meet on planet "Donkeypubes" in 15 minutes. All welcome.

Apparently does the game start to bug out once you fly to far away from the system. At least is that what happens when you try to reach the sun.

https://youtu.be/D2XX2ZnRk8M (skip towards the end)

Saw it, there are bugs effectively but that doesn't prove anything. After 6 hours of playing, it shows that he has now to travel 295 weeks at cruise speed to get back to the planet's beacon, the equivalent of nearly 4 years. He should continue his flight and see what happens

I dont believe for a second that Sean isnt saying anything about the issue because of any NDA. One, the game launched, and two, he said time and time again for people to not buy his game hoping for this, or that thing other games were doing. "dont buy my game, it isnt X" wouldnt be expressed even in thought If he had an NDA haning in his head. From What I see, there is two possibilities.

1: He was lying through his teeth, and the silence is to make as much sales as possible, and in case of the PC release, make people play more than the 2 hours eligible for a refund. from what I know, preorders are refunded no questions asked by valve, arent they? Its a bit harder after the 2 hours unless the dev talks to valve to grant the refunds, something is a lot more rare (Arkham Knight levels of fuckery).

2: There is some form of multiplayer that isnt working at the moment, and they are not responding because of insane amount of crunch time and they generally being dead to the world until they make the date for PC release. (I dont believe its "adding features"), dont remember any game dev saying they are adding a new form of AA or ATI compatibiliy drivers a week before launch.

Lying or not, we saw those people are on some serious crunch since the game went gold for PS4. Like, unhealthy levels. The silence could be this, our it could be that he was lying, and to be honest, that would tank my faith in the industry for good. That a person could go on live television and lie to the face of Colbert. I am not even american and understand you just dont do that unless you have no morals whatsoever.

At first I though well not that I trust that he's saying the truth, but would he really lie to everybody perfectly knowing that all of this could be proven very quickly?

But know I'm on the camp that he's just waiting till the game releases on PC to get all the sales they can get and then drop the bomb.

I really hope there's some kind of truth on all this, but it all seems pretty sketchy.

This is more like telling a friend for a year that you're going to Disneyland and maybe you can pick up some McDonald's for the road. On the morning of you text your friend that you're not hungry so you'll be driving directly to the park, and your friend gets super pissed because the main reason he was ever excited was that chance of a McDonald's pit stop.

No, that's not a good comparison. It has to be something extremely menial, like you're allowed to go and have fun on all the rides, eat mcdonalds, try all the carnival mini games, except the one where you can use a BBgun to shoot Minions.

Sorry, I missed this.

I would ask "Why wait so long?" and if I didn't receive a response by the end of the weekend then that would put an end to my trust in the developer.

I am fully capable of changing my position based on new evidence, NBD.
We'll be on the same side soon :D

As for the question: sales. (again). In this industry, you've got to be borderline cynical or at least entertain a healthy degree of scepticism.

I think we can leave that to the team to complain about if they should really care

Denial:
Why can't people get this? It is completely random for the off chance it ever happens, lol. You can't coordinate with specific people, you just may randomly stumble on it, when the instance allows it to happen.

Anger:
People need to remember how whiny this reaction was next time people complain about annualized and tired franchises.

Bargaining:
I wonder if it something has to do with the portals. They've been discovered, but nobody has figured yet how to activate them as far as I know.

He is so vague probably because there's some convulated way, some requirements not met before people actually can actually meet up in real time with each other. Saying anything at all would (in his view) already give too much of a clue to that.

At least, that's what I'm thinking why he's keeping it rather vague.

Depression:
If it turns up you cant really connect with other people, It will make me really sad. Not because of no man sky, but with the whole industry as a whole. That you can make these kinds of statments and get away with it.

Acceptance:
What? It's totally fine to lie. People just need to play the game, it's really good. People who play it, wouldn't complain. Others have no right to do so. In the end, they delivered.

Cliffy does not own the IP.

Sean owns the IP.

One is a small Indie dev, the other worked for a mega game corporation.

I would do the same if I was an Indy dev before I had a CM. Man, some people sure are reaching to discredit this one man.

Only works if it is the same person there, mate. I am still on the 'benefit of the doubt, and expect something to be said by Monday' camp.

I think he was talking about the planets that you see. They aren't painted, they are actually there. And the day/night cycle comes from the angle the sun is hitting those planets. You can fly to the dark side of a planet and it will be night. Fly over to the sunlit side and it will be daytime.
But the planets don't rotate, so that's not possible.

From my understanding of it, two players would need to be in the same instance. If you werent on my FL and I couldn't invite you to a game of Destiny say, we could go to the same area of the Cosmodrome, but the chances of us being in the same instance is very slim. That's how I see it anyway. Didn't someone say anyway that the two streamers were at the same station but one had a view of the planet in day and the other at night? Not the same instance so they wouldn't be there.

Had a quick skim through this thread but to clarify :

You cannot just fly off in one direction without a hyperdrive in one direction and eventually arrive at another star system?

You cannot fly your ship into a star?

Give criticism where it's due by all means but this is flat out ridiculous.

There are no mascots.

I'm doubting how those streamers even wound up in the same galaxy without something going on behind the scenes.

Hey guys, I'm on a planet named Destructoid. Come find me!

Let's see how long this takes ;)

Guys lets meet in Super Mario Bros, Im in the flag pole at the end of 1-1 ;)

I appreciate the long response and explanation of your point of view. Mine differs a bit.

First off, while I realize that these are real people, I think it's a trap to relate too closely to developers - or in general people who want to sell you something. Sometimes videogame podcasts with close relations to developers fall into that trap. Even Giantbomb sometimes although they handle it pretty well for the most part (favorite gaming site next to gaf for years now). But as nice as some of these dev dudes can be, in the end everyone still needs to take responsibility for their actions. That means even a nice guy deserves backlash for lying and wilful deceit, for example. Their status as nice, relatable indie devs doesn't automatically exempt them from taking responsibility for their actions and they do not automatically deserve our respect.

Furthermore, I hate the exploitative relationship that often exist between consumers and developers/publishers in the videogame industry. Consumers are mostly treated like idiots with overblown promises and exploitative game systems and the like. There are "good guys" out there who can maintain great releationships with their fanbase, of course. Unfortunately, it seems that going by the (non-)actions, HG chose an exploitative relationship by deliberately overpromising, stating obtuse allusions to features that don't exist to let players keep dreaming until the very last day before launch, by not correcting earlier statements and by refusing to give clarification when directly asked at the game's launch. Buying time is the whole point of their radio silence; saving those PC sales. This is why I'm also not a fan of giving them time to explain themselves. They could do that very quickly with a short tweet but they are not doing that.

That's fair and well-reasoned. I can't deny that he's been obtuse; for him its for the sake of the game and keeping the secrets secret and it looks almost as if he's toying with the player in a friendly way, but it is clear that the player doesn't like this game he's playing with them. The response has definitely come to a head and it's hard enough to avoid to the point where Sean and the studio should definitely take responsibility and answer the questions those have raised, and waiting until after the PC release to do so definitely doesn't reflect well on them. I hope for everyone's sake we get a good answer.

We'll be on the same side soon :D

Hah! Yeah... I mean it's a quality I've been working on, but a bit unusual in this instance because my point of view is born out of a built-up image of the developer. So in that regard this is a bit of a crucial moment for them in my mind.

Is that what we call a shitstorm these days?

Fine it's not a "shitstorm" per say. But if it's covered by news site then I would consider it an issue. After all Sony finally had to comment on the sticker saying that it was a production issue after 1 day when it was finally revealed to be true..

There has been no answer to this and there doesn't seem to be any to be expected anytime soon. We're still info less and the silence is garnering more discussion on why they don't wish to mention this or even confirm whether it's in the game.

That's why this whole topic is fucking ridiculous.

The whole game sends you to the center of the galaxy. Everyone's map shows them a direct path to the center. Do you know what a funnel looks like? That's NMS. Everyone, if they want, will eventually meet at a similar point in space.

If this game worked like Sean said it worked, I could name a planet Squirrel Dildo right near the center of the galaxy and meet a friend there. We could see each other. It would add extra weight to the Universe, knowing there are people floating around in the same galaxy and that I could one day come across a familiar face on Squirrel Dildo.

Instead, this isn't the case.

There's a incredibly slim chance we could meet aliens one day in our real life universe.

Is that exciting to you? Would you pay $60 for that chance?

If your answer is yes, then Sean lied.

It's a joke.
But there's nothing at the end of that rainbow you're chasing, friend.

I am not chasing anything, friend, I am waiting for an answer. The benefit of the doubt is I do not expect developers to jump in the first week because I said, 'jump'.

Not everybody thinks meeting real people in a huge universe is menial.

?

Its been downplayed since Day 1.
Have you not been keeping up with the NMS news?
Are you one of those guys who pre-ordered blindly?
Were you thinking to yourself "I can't wait to meet up with my buddy Jeb"?

Well, I myself am 0.1% disappointed in the games' delivery, however, I'll wait for a statement from NMS/Sean before I equate the single-of-many-sprinkles on top of the icing on the cake to a waste of a 60$ purchase.

The chances of being able to do so are extremely small ;)

everyone is in the same galaxy.

unless you went to the center, then you go to galaxy 2 and are in the same galaxy as all others who went to galaxy 2.

the galaxy is not random.

Maybe it wasn't cut. Maybe it was a bug introduce in a later build that they didn't realize due to how unimportant the feature was and difficulty to test.... And they haven't responded yet because it's only been a couple days and they haven't resolved if they can fix it or not. The are many perfectly reasonable explanations, none worth the vitriol of some of those so worked up in here about a feature that was never important to the core gameplay itself

Then say that it is still in and they are working on it... Not that hard. As for the vitriol. I said a while ago that they pretty much did it to themselves. People are going to go in with $60 worth of expectations based off of things said on huge public platforms and now that there has been an example of not just one but two things that the team said that would most likely never happen but at the same time where possible, people are rightfully worried.

It could have been cleared up immediately but it has been a while now. They are literally getting rich off of the misinformation while we give them our money. Thing is their earlier messaging reached many, many more people than their tweets did and those larger platforms are where they spoke on MP being in. That is ridiculously disingenuous no matter how you look at it because the average consumer isn't going to be taking to twitter or video game forums to puzzle out from the other vague info that the feature may not be there in the capacity that they stated.

You can read my posts from way earlier in the thread. I was nothing but patient and sure that this would be cleared up quickly but we are this far out from launch and nothing.

The vitriol is only going to get worse the longer they wait. This shouldn't be surprising to anyone.
