Am I missing something here though? In both clips he uses the Force to manipulate objects, revealing his power. I thought it was done much better in ESB where he throws shit at Luke while totally abandoning the saber duel. Sometimes less is more because you allow the audience to make those connections on their own instead of outright showing them "this is how powerful Vader is", which works so much better and has a more meaningful impact. Yoda lifted an X-Wing.. but through the use of mythology and mystery as building blocks, the audience is left wondering HOW powerful he is instead of being shown. I think that's when SW works best. It's not a matter of being technically limited. ESB has the best scene in all of SW (Yoda/Luke/X-Wing) and it's great because of what it doesn't give the viewer.

Why continue to imply how strong he is after 3 movies and 40 years? It's time we're shown and they've been doing that in the comics and Rebels, which I enjoy.

Because we're dealing with a Vader whose far past his prime, right before the ANH timeline. Why would we see that now? Which is the same reason we don't see Yoda's full power. Dude dies pretty much right after he lifts the X-Wing. In this position, I think mythology/mystery work best, just like they did in the OT.

I'm not sure what you're getting at with past his prime.

Rebels takes place a bit before A New Hope, so whatever he is capable of in that, he would be new Rogue One.

You know, if there's one thing the comics made me want, it's that I hope he does some classy Vader snark in the film.

.

Darth Vader does not talk like this.

Who do they hire to write these comics?

I haven't seen much from Rebels, but I wouldn't enjoy seeing him vastly more powerful than what was displayed in the OT for the reasons I stated. The Emperor specifically targets Luke as a successor because he knows how much more powerful he is than Vader. He threw him to the side to be killed when the time was right.

Hoping to see something that gives me a sense of personality, which has been strangely lacking in the official media I have seen so far, some of the celebration stuff was nice but marketing wise I feel they have done a poor job and I consider myself a huge huge star wars fan.

Chatty in what way? Loved him in ANH.

People seem to think/remember wrong that Darth Vader only talks in short direct bursts in super stoic manner and that he can't talk in complete sentences (with emotion/personality).

He talks at length in ANH many times.

"wahh Vader doesn't talk like that"

Yeah, I'd agree that marketing is subpar so far but maybe they're waiting closer to the release? I dunno.

Hoping it goes into full effect now since the movie is coming out in 3-ish months.

I know, I just watched it yesterday and I LOVE him in the film. I don't think there is a specific way Vader should talk but if it feels off, it feels off. From what I've seen in Rebels (which has been admittedly very little), he feels pretty different from what we see in the OT. Maybe I should watch more.

Same. They need to sell us on the characters. Let's give them a chance to do so.

Lucasarts did a panel at Celebration about the designing for Rogue One and it fits with this conversation, they talked about designing based on what you think you saw in A New Hope versus what was actually there and how they made improvements to that effect, was fascinating.

Should rewatch.

A lot of people seem to just remember the super direct/intimidating component to Vader, forgetting the times he's been almost playful "obi wan we meet again at last. the circle is now complete, when i left you i was but a learner but now I am the master". And the tantrum/pissyness of him as well seems to be forgotten.

Vader is noticeably more shrill and prone to losing his temper in ANH when compared to the cool and collected guy in the later films. With reports of how painstakingly they're recreating his ANH suit, it'd be nice if they paid similar attention to his voice and demeanor. Somehow I doubt it.

Probably just going to deliver a cold badass one liner or two given that he's probably not going to do much talking/have much screentime (my assumption).

"I told you she wouldn't consciously betray the Rebellion." I love how he can even seem witty at times.

Yeah, that's kind of what I'm saying in this (ignored) post from the previous page:

I think you guys are just so used to the specific limited dialogue he had in the movies that any additional dialogue attributed to him seems weird regardless of how close it is.

The guy who waits behind a banquet table to ambush the rebels and then says "We would be honored to have you join us" in ESB would totally also say "I've killed so very many fathers, you'll have to be more specific". I think the comics have done a good job of keeping him concise and dramatic, but with just a hint of that dark humor.

The limited amount of dialogue he has (really in all three movies) lends itself to a lot of A. filling in some of his personality in the viewer's head and B. it sounding "not right" because all of it is so iconic and limited that anything new is going to sound like "not Vader". We all have his lines so memorized at this point that it sounds weird to hear him say anything new at all (in Rebels, the comics, and presumably in Rogue One).

I get where you're coming from but I definitely think there's personal preference for what people think Vader should be saying and I don't think it has to do with how few of lines he has in the films. If it doesn't fit with what's been previously established, it won't work.. but again, a lot of that is subjective. I think most of us can agree, though, that the "NOOOO" from Ep. 3, for example, was ridiculous and totally out of character. Bad writing. The rest of what he said before that was pretty good though I thought. A lot is subjective but there's obviously a line most people would agree shouldn't be crossed.

Much of the problem, for me, is that I feel he's written pretty much perfectly in the OT (even within the various "personalities" throughout all three films), and because the bar had been set so high, it's difficult to find writing that matches that level of quality.

Oh yeah, I watched that. Really interesting stuff. Stuff like the decals on the original Stormtrooper helmets being sculpted in now and how the original Death Star wasn't very spherical but the new digital version is.

Soonnnnn....[spoilers] Right? [/spoilers]

Maybe. They're really making people watch swimming, though.

I think the funnier part will be that since I'm in Canada, we probably won't even get it here and it'll have different commercials.

I'm sure it'll be on Youtube within ten minutes, though.

It'll definitely be on youtube asap after it airs. I imagine that won't show it until after the swimming portion though, but yea this is borderline getting late for people in the midwest and East coast.

It's turning into that endless wait for halftime for the second Force Awakens trailer.

any countdown ? timezones are my natural enemy

A bunch of people on Twitter said it'd be at 9pm EST, and it's been a couple of commercial breaks and nowhere to be found. I suspect it'll be closer to the end of this hour at this point, to maximize the ratings for the hour.

It's not that he talks, it's that Vader in the comics is almost funny, with witty sarcasm and shit. It's really weird

It's probably going to be right after the Phelps swimming event, at the end of the hour.

Someone on Reddit (so take it with a grain of salt) mentioned that a friend at the local TV station said it looks like it'll be very near 10pm EST.
