For those that claim creatures in NMS look "samey" and lack variety, I present you to the Snoende Blockhead. Took this last night on a snowy/toxic planet in my starter system. Toxic seems to bring out the weird in everything. Thank gods they were docile because there were herds of these freakshows.

Is there a way to check that your uploads are actually uploading? I get the credits and the symbol turns green but I have the no online connection warning at the bottom of the screen.

Is the warning wrong?

I assume it uploads it when you have a connection again (the online services being online/offline happens on and off for me during every session multiple times)?

I definitely haven't had any of my names roll back to their original names.

Beautiful.

Thanks for the info all around!
no worries fellow hawk
- Multi-tools cannot be found with Scanners (or at least not for me yet). They are found in boxes inside outposts (usually by the aliens) or you get them through interacting with aliens or monoliths.

1) You need the very original Life Support System, the Alpha (+1) just prolongs it. Now if you find Life Support Sigma, you can delete Alpha if you need to spot.

2) There are drop ship pods out on the worlds where you can buy backpack slots, each time you find one they go up in price by 10,000 units (I am currently at something like 25 slots). I hear you will be able to buy them from Space Stations later if you chose a certain path.
You don't need to
Follow the Atlas
to get an AtlasPass.

Do you see the
Space Anomalies
the same way if you choose that path?

I want one like that but I saved and when I could afford it they doubled in price in the same station as before :(

And right after this i found a crashed ship with 1 more slot, but the model sucked asses, so...

I think the game actively tries to troll you, what happened with the price of that ship you wanted has happened to me too before, lol.

Huh? Having more slots means I can carry more inventory which means I can use said inventory to acquire currency to get a new ship or different items. Getting a new ship with its own benefits makes me enjoy the game and discovery more.

Not to mention those "bigger numbers" means you can live longer, swim deeper, explore further, defend yourself better, etc. The gameplay mechanics actually feed into one another very well.

Goal: get to the center of the Galaxy.

Solution: repair ship, and craft hyperdrive fuel

Goal: repair ship, and craft hyperdrive fuel.

Solution: explore environment for the necessary materials.

Goal: survive the harsh environment of the planet, whether it be hostile creatures, or extreme environmental hazards.

Solution: explore for materials to keep you alive while discovering blueprints to improve your suit, mutltitool, and ship.

How much you enjoy those gameplay loops is subjective. Some people will be engrossed. Some people will be bored silly. Neither reaction is wrong.

Also, in the above scenarios, I left out alternative solutions:

Pirate or trade for the above resources (for example, instead of hunting for the antimatter recipe, I initially bought the antimatter itself from a trader until I came across a facility with the recipe).

If course, piracy and trade opens up their own gameplay loops:

Goal: Be a pirate!

Solution: improve and build up your offensive and defensive capabilities to be a more effective (i.e., not dead) pirate.

Goal: Be an effective (i.e., not dead) pirate!

Solution: explore the environment for blueprints and ships that will improve your offensive and defensive capabilities.

Goal: Be a trader!

Solution: improve relationships with the various alien factions so you can get the best deals on the goods you're trying to sell.

Goal: improve relations with the various factions!

Solution: explore the environment to find members of the species to communicate with and improve your standing with them through helping them.

Goal: communicate with various sentient species!

Solution: explore the environment to discover knowledge stones and ruins that will teach you the words of a sentient faction, and even increase your standing with them if you pass their tests.

I just think it's a well designed gameplay loop that's in need of polish and tweaking. The core is good, and it's completely on the individual if they find the core engaging. I plan o offering as much feedback as I can, because I want Hello Games to continue to improve. We know they read GAF, so it doesn't hurt to express your concerns ad gripes with the game.

How about this crazy theory, game time is also a variable in the procedural generation, your game time (GT) doesn't follow real life time (RLT) , we start at the same GT when we first start the game but your GT only passes when you're playing the game (and not in the pause menu) . People go meet in the same place in RLT of course won't see each other because they are not in the same GT, they won't see the same time of day, weather effects etc
So how can people ever see each other at the same place and in GT? People can be in the same location in the same GT but not RLT, well the later players that arrive (in RLT) can see the earlier players (in RLT), not the other way, maybe the game saves at certain locations of player names and GT that were there. That's how you can see other players, the longer you play, the more people play, the more likelywood you ever see anyone or anyone ever sees you. And this "multiplayer" is not hard to implement, the server only needs to save at certain locations the name of players and the GT that were there.
(Unsure if you can travel back in time (GT) with blackholes and faster than speed of light travel)

I think I'm done. This game has such a weirdly self-defeating gameplay loop. Everything needs to be charged but your inventory is limited so you walk around pointing your laser at stuff so you can...charge your stuff so you can do it for other things.

Oh. My. God. Its so fucking boring.

Its sad because I generally like the feeling of walking through an alien (extremely sterile) world but holy shit this game is the cure for insomnia.

If I could go the rest of my life without ever again hearing the words "gameplay loop" I would die a happy man.

Someone posted this tip earlier in the thread, and I have found it so useful... It really belongs in the OP. Here it is again for people that don't know:

Press the Melee attack button, and during the lunge-forward animation hold the jetpack button: It rockets you across the landscape at least 3 times the speed of sprinting, and lasts as long as you have fuel in your jetpack.

Its perfect for getting out of trouble or just moving around MUCH faster in general.

Yeah it's been mentioned before, but no harm and restating it.

This game really needs two things.

A buggy
And your own base mother ship

This game is super immersive. Sitting at 2am, head phones on and warping into a system with a black hole was so awesome.

That being said, the amount of distance it sent me was eh, underwhelming :P

Agreed.

This game is everything and more of what was promised by Sean Murray.

Not to mention the updates coming down the pike that will add all of our hopes and wishes to the game.

What's to hate on here?!?

the moment im' flying a giant freighter is the day none of this madness matters

Just explored a toxic hell hole. The sentinels were aggressive and there were storms every other minute. So I made a cave for myself and waited out the storms to return to my ship.
.
Spent 170k on a multitool with 24 slots. No regrets.
I have never had so much fun with a game in recent memory. It's a shame that this game is getting drowned out by memes and hyperbole...

Either a buggy, or a robot mech. I can see how a rover could cause a lot of bugs trying to get around all the varied terrain this game generates.

But yeah... I really would rather them focus on letting us build portable bases on giant ships instead of planetary bases. Then we can hire a fleet of mercenary pilots and have ourselves a carrier ship with a well-stocked bar.

Yeah. Your base mother ship is the vessel that travels solar system to solar system, and your smaller ship does the planet entry and planet exploration (inter-solar system exploration basically).

It also lets you expand and develop another aspect of the game that is persistently with you. And grows and expands as you do.

Because right now, yeah - fuck it I get to name plants on planets but once you leave that planet and solar system, it's no longer persistent.

If they implement base expanding on a planet I'm going to be so disappointed. Who the fuck cares about some random ass planet that you're going to need warp cells to travel back to.

Base mother ship or bust.

Dumb question: can you fly around the planet/landscape in your ship? Is it cost efficient? Or are you better off just walking where you want to go?

I'm getting more frequent instances of crashing, and just today a new bug has been introduced for me. I would say about 1 in10 times I lift off the ground with my normal thrusters, I'm vertically rocketed back into space above the planet. It's super annoying, so now I'm in the habit of entering my ship, exiting the save, then entering again so I can reload if I need to.

No, I mean, see the first line of my post.

I actually sort of already got two helpful answers, at least worth investigating.

what

Do you mean like blueprints? You have to have an open slot. If your multitool doesn't have any open slots you wouldn't be able to install anything anyway... :P

I mean...yeah...but I should still be able to see what I have in my inventory anyway, and then decide to open a spot or not :/

I just want to say initially when they mentioned base building I thought it was silly but I can totally understand it now. I've been on some planets that I can spend multiple game sessions on, wouldn't mind setting up my own little hut (especially if I can put a trade machine in there)

Oh I've been through at least 6 black holes, some of them have taken me multiple million light years and I am still over 170,000 light years from the center. They don't seem to be doing what I expect. They just seem to warp you elsewhere, not closer to the center. It's very confusing.

I have found the exact same thing. Exactly what you say. It makes no sense. I've gone through TWO black holes and based on how far I'm travelling each time vs the distance I am from the Centre prior to entering, I should have easily reached the Centre by now. But no.

Thread moves way to fast. Wasnt aware of this. Thank you!

A faster form a movement on planet's would be most welcome. Have the sprint upgrade but yea. . Not good enough imo.

I see a ship with a distress signal, but when I get to it I just pass it. Do I do anything or...?

Or I guess it's not a ship but just someone sent a signal there?

Has anyone made it to a different galaxy?

Shouldn't it be possible to get further away as well? The whole point is not knowing where the other side is.

Landed on a planet with lots of species to find (12). Yes! I'll take my time, discover the planet and so on.

Got off the ship. I started scanning around it. Found 9 animals in two minutes. Kind of takes the edge of the discovery factor...

Aside from that, I find that upgrading the suit with slots and techs really makes this game more fun.

I went through one that sent me 6.8 million light years and I ended up 2000 light years further away from the center then the prior galaxy.

So I'm starting to wonder if maybe the games rules being broken as you get closer to the core isn't actually true. I've taken many black holes now and it still isn't changing much. However, as soon as I had a better warp drive and jumped into a system I previously wouldn't have been able to I found lots of bizarre geometry that clash really heavily. I'm starting to think it's just gated behind the drive type and star type instead.

Kind of the problem with single biome planets. If they don't spawn everywhere them where would they spawn?

I can't bring myself to leave my starting solar system lol
The struggle is real for many including myself. I'm only two jumps out exploring my third system and I still get the itch to go back home.

Apologies if this has already been covered, I've been sort of trying to avoid this thread because I don't necessarily want to know too much and am worried that seeing the lovely screenshots and hearing your stories will ruin the element of surprise, should I decide to buy the game. But I find myself still very uncertain about whether this game will appeal to me, even after talking to people who own it, reading some of the posts in this thread, reading some early reviews, and even watching people stream some of the early gameplay.

I'm pretty down with the idea of crafting, so long as it's towards a greater purpose. I never really enjoyed crafting for the purpose of making the +2 sword that's incrementally better than my +1 sword, but I adore the complex crafting system in, say, Atelier games to make ridiculous items with strange properties. I also like the idea of slowly evolving my ship and equipment over time to let me do new things (or old things more efficiently, though that's less revolutionary obviously). I feel like I'm someone who likes exploration, but the last time I played a game with an explicit exploration aspect was Elite: Dangerous, and I never felt like I was really equipped to explore, nor did there seem to be much point (yay I found an undiscovered star, but what the hell do you DO with it?). On the other hand, someone else in this thread mentioned Fallout 4, and I loved walking around the Boston area running into random encounters and new sets of computer logs and other kinds of environmental storytelling. But my sense is that No Man's Sky is not the kind of game to fill its world with intricate little details, if only because the procedurally generated nature doesn't really allow for it.

I guess the fundamental question I have is this: I've seen complaints in this thread that people fly to new planets and see lots of the same stuff. I've also seen people praising the game for how wonderful the exploration is. How do people reconcile these two things? Are the first group of people exaggerating? Do the second group of people have a different idea of what "exploration" means that includes seeing a lot of the same environments repeated? If so, what is that idea? Even the Ars Technica review notes that "exploration" feels pretty good, while also decrying the repetition of assets and environments. How can you have both these things?
