Well the uncovered event sure had November first as a troll date but that was changed to September so....

Let's take the time to relive another legendary rumor thread that no one wanted to believe: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=483255
Just 26 pages for the thread? Versus XIII didn't had as much hype back then :P

A delay means more polish and a better game. I've waited this long, I can wait another 2 months. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, DQVII, and The Last Guardian should keep me busy.

I'm fine with this and it's good for consumers.

Taking the characters out of your control doesn't diminish the bond you have with them. The thing is FF fans have different sensibilities on what they want and expect which is why the fanbase is so divisive. Not to mention each single one of us had a different first experience with FF (6,7,8,9, etc) there's no universal consensus.
You can bond with them in other ways, sure. But gameplay is a way of bonding with characters; in many games it can be the deepest way. Now, FF has cutscenes and what not that also draw you into the characters, but that doesn't mean nothing is being taken away. So I mean not to say that action combat=no character bonding, but it does cut off a key font of it.

Now if that loss of control came at the benefit of a killer combat system, it could be well worth the loss. I haven't played the demos or watched too much footage, but judging from fan reaction and what I have seen, that does not seem to be the case. Rather it seems a lackluster action system is being used just so that it is an action system, while this undermines one of FFs traditional charms. That seems a crass, for lack of a better word, design decision. I could be misjudging things, obviously.

I guess my concern is further amplified because the talk-y parts of many FFs don't actually do much for me in the majority of the games. It mostly works as follows: Art/gameplay does most of the work and causes me to look on clumsy dialogue fondly. So I guess it doesn't help that I don't like XV art much either :p.

But still, I'm cautiously optimistic that XV turns out well. I'd like to want to play it, but absent that I just want it to do well in a respectable fashion, even if it's not for me.

...

But yeah FF is all over the map and always has been. That was its identifying ethos, and is really both what makes the series special and sets up its failings.

Well that sucks. Really unexpected given how sure they were of the date that they based the entire Uncovered event on it. Just give me a cool Gamescom trailer and I'll be mostly content.

The thing is, this isn't just the usual game delay (if it is true). They had the huge Uncovered Event which was all about the release date. They rented a whole theater, had live streaming all over the world, had stars on stage... Now 6 weeks before release hastily overturning this is imo a huge blow. For the fans but to them as well. It will damage this game's and Final Fantasy's reputation even more. Even as a loyal supporter of this game I have to say: What an embarrassing mess! D:

That's a good FFVII: Remake reference.

With Persona 5 coming out here in the middle of September, I don't really mind. If they need this time to better optimize/polish the game, I'd rather them do that before release then after it's out, since I'm only going to play through it once.

If it's delayed they should try to make the english VO not so absolutely awful.

The Kingsglaive
after-credits scene leaked on twitter and the VO is absolutely terrible

Put me in the camp that's fine with this delay. I've enjoyed what I've seen so far and I'm confident as long as the game isn't a technical mess, I'll enjoy what's there. If the game needs a couple more months of polish, so be it.

September also looks like hell to me. Cold Steel 2, SMT IV A, Steins;Gate 0 and DQ7 as well? I already decided to put off SMTIV and was going to put off S;G0. November doesn't hold near as much for me personally (Pretty much just Pokemon), so this means I probably can get through S;G0. Honestly, from a purely selfish standpoint this seems really positive to me.

I doubt that many people really care outside of some diehard fans eagerly awaiting the game. It's much better than releasing the game in a state that would no doubt ruin FF's reputation even worse though.

Somehow JC3 managed to get by without a huge ruckus but XV would absolutely get obliterated if this shit happened.

I'm so over this game at this point. I'll play it, but you can't help but divorce yourself from a product at some point. Also, you give them the benefit of the doubt of hitting a date when they have a stage show to SPECIFICALLY ANNOUNCE THE RELEASE DATE! Yet, somehow, they manage to outdo themselves in their ditch-digging practices.

Pretty much. I'm not even buying the CE which is rare for an FF game as I usually have multiple CEs for FF games. Gonna just play the normal game and be done with it.

Has there been any case in the history of videogames when a delay, not the final product, has done lasting damage to a brands reputation? Even Duke Nukem Forever, it's a laughing stock not because of the delays, but because it was still shit despite them.

Delaying a game will harm no one. Come November, we'll all be excited for it, just like we are now. Possibly more so, if Neo is in the picture.

Ouch - i dont really care about this game but i hope a delay to 2017 doesnt have impact on DQXI and KH3 release plans...doubt they would wanna release all 3 of them in a span of a couple months.

Damn, this can't be serious! Don't hold such a ridiculously large event if you are unsure of hitting the mark. If true, this kind of partially deflates my hype.

inbefore miyamoto wisdom. Delaying a game is fine, but you can't do it indefinitely and except people to always be fine with it.

Personally I can't see it after that big event they put on to announce the date among other things and while this IMMENSELY disappoints me if true, and would probably be the most disappointing delay news I could receive, (It's seriously a struggle waiting for September at this point already for me), if the game really needs the delay, I'd rather it get it than ending up not meeting expectations.

I voted for March because I'd rather it get delayed until then so it's actually finished when it comes out. I don't mean the planned DLC either , I mean just the main game being finished.

Back in March of this year, when this release date was announced I was hopeful but also skeptical. I've put up my own timeline pieced together based on news and interviews over the years and while September feels possible , it's also one of those place holder sounding dates because it's the last day of the fall fiscal quarter (which is also the end of Quarter 2 of the fiscal year that ends on March 31st 2017).

It's as though the execs went to the team and asked Tabata how things were coming along towards the end of last year and , well, perhaps things were coming together quite rapidly , the engine was almost finished (roughly on schedule from what I understand) , the scenario was complete and a good portion of the game was at least sort of playable in an alpha state. It just needed to be stitched together , balanced/tweaked and polished. Tabata was likely asked - what's the soonest it would be ready to ship , bearing in mind the needs of certification and porting optimizations. 9 months was probably handed out if the entire 9 months were some of the worst most hellish crunch time imaginable. Some of the higher ups obviously agreed to this and so "operation 09/30/16" was put into motion. The 03/31/16 event was announced and went off quite well , giving fans a way to pre-order fancy limited editions, announcing an anime and a full CG movie to help things along for the world of FFXV.

Now , everyone here might recall that a bit of backlash occurred at E3 this year when the game was showcased very poorly during the MS presser event. Rumors started swirling at the time - FFXV was pretty janky and it was going to be a real struggle to have it ready for 09/30. At the time though, I don't recall reading that a delay was planned , I merely accepted that all the announcement stuff from the march 30th event was based on a ton of uncompleted assets. I mean, it's rather telling when every bit of material released since E3 is using the PC build to keep things looking as good as possible. What I'm getting at , is that the game was earlier than what it seemed back in March and the June E3 showing proved this theory.

Put yourself in Tabatas shoes ,you've had 4 years to turn this massive project around and combined , the executives have probably spent 50 million + just on FFXV (never mind versus XIII) plus another 40 million or so on the Kingsglaive film along with a few million on the anime AND another 50 million marketing everything. This game has to be the single most expensive project in Square Enix History all told , outside of the huge bath that was taken back in 2001 with The Spirits Within.

This project HAS to succeed because the company has hemorrhaged too much money on it. But , again, the money is everything here, the shareholders won't let it get delayed out of the valuable holiday quarter , especially not when every month this game gets delayed another 1.5 million dollars gets spent on it. BUT , thanks to FFXIV being such a disaster back in 2010 , they are also hesitant to release something unfinished , there's no patching an relaunching a single player experience. This game just has to work and work quite well in order to come anywhere close to that goal of 10 million copies sold.

So long story short - a 2 month delay might be all it needs to get a cert capable build of the game that's still pretty fun (but maybe a tiny bit janky) out the door in time for christmas and thus, allow square to cash in all those pre-orders and hopefully move a few million copies in time for the end of December. Than, they simply keep going , patch the game day 1 and probably again every month or 2 until sometime next year when it's as polished as it probably should be to launch.

OR rather then a 2 month wait combined with promising the world while apologizing profusely (I expect a small press conference filled with bowing by the beginning of September if there's any truth to this delay) , they simply rip the bandaid off and announce that on September 30th , a full demo will be available to everyone that contains a sampling of the actual game (like a duscae replacement) and the full game has been delayed to early to mid march to make sure it's properly polished and "as great an experience as is possible". That's some spin right there, the honest truth is that the game probably needs 2 months just be fully playable begining to end and another 2 months to make sure it works properly AND another 2 months after that to polish it all up so it runs at as high a frame rate and resolution as is possible.

I would rather wait , but I can see why for business reasons , things might not go that way. At the very least , November 30th won't surprise me in the slightest , I just hope they don't go 6 weeks and then do a second delay to february and then a third delay to march. Just give us a new date and take their lumps once , whenever that date may be and regardless of how finished the game is , release it on that day.

I mean the Miyamoto quote sounds hackneyed at this point but it's true , to a degree - people 5 years down the road will fondly recall FFXV as that great game that took forever to make if it's actually good when it comes out. But if they release it too early just to please shareholders it'll be counted as a mistep and probably kill the brand and seriously harm square enix as a whole. This is their most important product right now , it absolutely MUST succeed which for the most part means it also has to be a good game that's finished in every way that matters towards a products end quality. As for the other 2 big SE projects - Kingdom hearts and FF7r , well kingdom hearts 3 started utterly from scratch around the same time that versus XIII was repurposed and we've seen little to nothing so far. It's a 2018 game I feel. FF7r being episodic means we might actually see one part next year or at least a demo since FF7 is 20 soon. Dragon Quest XI is the trump card, in Japan I feel like it's free money, it's the game that will balance the books if FFXV shits the bed so they'll be making damn sure it's finished. I recall it was planned for release in time for the 30th anniversary of the series but more recently that was put on the back burner. It will probably make it out next summer in Japan and the US PS4 release will come with that FF7r demo :P

no one remembers delays, only the finished product - walt disney

Yeah... But given this gen's track records with delayed games still being crap after getting delayed, I wouldn't hold your breath on the finished product being that much better.

Just look at the public opinion of the game already... Every single Final Fantasy thread is a massacre. Even threads about other JRPGs or even fan made games are a FFXV massacre. This game is a laughing stock to most. Is there even any other game that people love to hate that much? Having a huge release announcement event and overturning everything again is the icing on this big mess of a cake.

If they need the delay, they need the delay, true! They know very well how big of a blow this is...but they must think it is worth to take this blow in the bigger picture of things. Still, this is all so embarrassing and awful. :( (If this is true and I'm starting to believe it is.)

Oh well. We have been waiting for so long that 2 months more don't seem as much.
Would still be pretty hilarious after they made a whole event to announce the release date lol

Feel bad for Gravity Rush 2 though. The Franchise isn't that popular to begin with and will now get overshadowed by FF

Gaf does NOT equal public opinion lol. If anything, closer to the opposite.
