Brazil is more concerned about their own image than actual justice
Not that i disagree with you, but i don't think that does have anything to do with that case. The police is investigating and they think the story is strange based on evidence and conflicting testimonies, not to say that none of them could even say where it all happened.

It is a strange case.

The passport seizure is because falsely reporting a crime is punishable with detention or a fine.

I'm not saying this is what happened, but that's the reasoning behind the judge's decision due to the incongruences between their report and the video that was released.

Art. 340 - Provocar a ação de autoridade, comunicando-lhe a ocorrência de crime ou de contravenção que sabe não se ter verificado:
Pena - detenção, de um a seis meses, ou multa.

Another article with more information, but it's in Portuguese: http://g1.globo.com/rio-de-janeiro/...-dos-passaportes-de-nadadores-americanos.html

Seems flimsy and shady on the part of the Brazilian gov. Their 'evidence' is that the 4 swimmers seemed "too relaxed" in a video shown of them later. Pretty bullshit reason to try and take their passports over unless they have something more solid. Could be that they're trying to re-direct the bad publicity by blaming the swimmers.

Does anyone have any actual evidence or reasoning to think this was a drug deal gone bad? Or are people just speculating over what happened in that 3 hour gap?

1. The video, yeah
2. They had their valuables
3. Swimmers stories' differ

so basically they are just shedding doubt because they passed through metal detectors with their phones and Olympic pass credentials and still goofed around because they were drunk.

Lochte and co said that they couldn't remember well the details because they were drunk

Brazil is spending more time analyzing the video footage of the athletes passing a metal detector and goofing around than actually looking for the mugger

Lochte should stay in the US IMO and not waste his time flying back out to Brazil because it is a joke what Brazilian judges are pulling now IMO
(I understand Portuguese)

LMFAO!

Just speculation

that's what i thought.

lol brazil, what a fucking disgrace.

"they look way to calm in this video to have been robbed! Better issue the search and seizure warrant!!"

this judge, and most of the law enforcement over there are most likely corrupt. Lochte isn't going back to that shit hole and if any of the other guys are there they need to GTFO stat.

I'm not saying the swimmers are free of guilty. The drug stuff is speculation, but the robbery story is also not totally credible. There's way too plot holes to the point that there is true doubt of what really happened, but no one is saying that there are involvement with drugs.

Brazil is a corrupt disgrace.

According to the documents, she watched surveillance video of the swimmers arriving at the athletes' village. "They arrived with their psychological and physical integrity unperturbed," she wrote, also noting that the swimmers appeared to be joking with each other and did not appear to be upset.

How the fuck can she make some kind of psychological evaluation by looking at some footage that's probably low quality?

I am sure that the US government will go ahead and extradite a couple of our Olympic athletes to go stand trial in front of what are sure to be morally immaculate judges in Brazil.

They didnt do anything similar with other stories. This one is just really weird.

They were either trying to score drugs or hookers and something went bad imo.

How can they make a psychoanalysis from security footage?

Wasn't the story that they were drunk? In which case wouldn't they be laughing like "Whoah bro I can't believe we made it out of that!" or something similar?

Get rekt Brazil. You suck.

They dont seem drunk in the footage.

Anyway, the condition thing is stupid, it's weird that they had their wallets, cellphones and watches tho.

For fucks sake guys, there are lots of "stranges" things here. The most obvious one is the time line. They have footage of them entering a taxi after leaving the party at 3 am and this footage of them Arrington is around 7am whereas the path should take about half an hour. What the heck did they do in the meantime? They said they went directly to the village.
Another consistency according to the judges are contradicting testimonies between the swimmers, but this one she didn't release any details.
And them there is the robber itself, where only money was stolen, no cellphone, no watches(they were carrying as can be seen in the footage) which is strange for a burgler after rending them. Specially here in Brazil where cellphones are stolen everywhere.
Finally, they didn't file any report, police only started to investigate after the news appeared in media

Anyway, they won't be arrest nothing will happen from these, but there are some inconsistencies, primarily the time line of events.

Calm down. Noboby is extraditing anyone over some false info on a police report... Jesus guys.

I am calm, my statement was tongue in cheek.

Finally, they didn't file any report, police only started to investigate after the news appeared in media

If they didn't even file a police report, then what's the problem? It's not like they booked all the talk shows to dish on their encounter. The media basically had to pry their lips open to get the story in the first place.

How dare these low life Brazilians investigate upstanding American citizens.

She said they did not appear to be physically or psychologically shaken by the alleged crime. "They arrived with their psychological and physical integrity unshaken,"

The judge wrote that she ordered the two swimmers’ passports seized and that both men remain in Brazil because investigators need more time to determine whether they are guilty of filing a false police report.

Yeah, no. This is a total bullshit reason to seize someone's passport and restrict their right to travel. It's lucky they got out, otherwise they should have beelined it to the US consulate for their own protection.

Sex, drugs or money.

Drugs not likely due to the nature of their professions.
Money probably not as visitors their connection to money making endeavors would be surprising.

That just leaves sex.

I'll leave the rest to your imagination.

I also thought they did NOT file a police report. Shit sounds corrupt

Why is everyone focusing on some silly comment about the video when records at the x-ray machine outside of the olympic village show Lochtie and Feigen had their all of their belongings when they came home that night

EDIT: My source for this claim is the daily mail, which is not accepted by GAF. So dis-regard, I guess?

EDIT: Oh is the daily mail not allowed on GAF?
No they're not. I don't see that X-ray bit in the judge's report.

Yep. I guess those brazilians peasents should let the glorious americans do whatever they want with no repercussions.

Never thought i would see that behaviour in gaf before the olympics, but it already got normal, unfortunately.

I'm pretty sure they said they were able to keep their passports and cellphones. The video confirms their story if anything.

What should "the repercussions" be for someone who tells a tall tale to the media?

As I understand it, they didn't file a police report. The police were responding to reports in the media. So, how would the judge have any reason to attempt to confiscate their passports? I'd get my butt out of there in a hurry ... something don't smell right.

Filing a false report in the US can sometimes result in a similar charge to that false report. Lie about a misdemeanor and you can be charged with one. Most tend to get probation or fine though.

True, but unless I missed something, I don't believe they filed a police report. That's why I made sure to add the "to the media" qualifier. The fact that the media basically had to drag it out of them makes me believe their story. It's not like they were shopping the story, trying to get on the front page and do the talk show circuit. It's totally possible that they made it up out of whole cloth, but I'm going to need more than what we've gotten from the Brazilian justice system before I sign off on an extradition.

How many days until the grainy video of these guys on folding chairs stiltedly apologizing to the camera while three Brazilian policemen stand behind them in an empty room, arms folded?

Then it's much ado about nothing.

Bob Costas just gave an update on the NBC telecast. This story is is getting very interesting and weird.

They might be better off hiding at the US Embassy since the Brazilian authorities aren't being too friendly.
