Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Technical Test Impressions (XB1/PS4)

I'm disappointed. What I wanted was essentially Titanfall 1.5 of that makes sense. Keep the gameplay
-add a single player component
-spruce up the visuals
-more guns
-more Titan customization options( colors designs voice options etc)
- more Titans that aren't locked down to an ability

What I got was not this. It reminds me like when COD was made by IW and Treyarch. You could tell that while they were both COD, they weren't made by the same people

I'd love to hear some confirmation that Attrition (with AI) will be in the final game. I know Respawn people have been in this thread...
Wait... the AI is gone??? As someone who invented a crazy number of hours in the first game (over 130 hours), the AI is pivotal.

I really hope it's in there... would be a crazy compromise to get PS4 included. I don't think the PS4 audience would even want a gimped version.

As someone who was looking forward to Titanfall 2, hearing all these impressions from people who enjoyed the first but don't care for this has me rethinking about buying it.

One of the main reasons I was interested was because of the movement speed and to hear that it has been slowed down in the sequel is not good news.

Not interested in BF1 at all and I'm not too sure about COD:IW. Titanfall 2 was going to be my FPS for the year and reading how the sequel is a step back makes me think I might just stick with Uncharted 4 for my MP gaming.

I sold my Xbox One a couple years ago and the one thing I sorely missed was Titanfall. This has been my most anticipated game for 2 years because I loved the first so much. I felt that if the core game was the same with new maps I'd be thrilled even with that, so it hurts reading all these unnecessary changes. I'll be able to play it when it unlocks to form my own opinion of course, but I know what I loved about the game and it sounds like all of its gone or changed for the worst.

They're still using servers though. Shouldn't matter that it isn't just Azure now. I think this is more easily explained by them just choosing different game modes for the test. They really didn't need more data on how Attrition plays.

But like I said above, I think confirmation that Attrition will be returning, with minions, would go a long way.

But they're using more than Azure, maybe those other servers don't handle it as well hence dumbing them down (can't hack spectres etc) and in most cases, removing them completely. Obviously they wouldn't be able to have TF1 AI in Azure servers, but when you switch servers you get dumbed down versions.

Not sure I believe the whole Azure/AI thing though, I think they just designed it this way to please the AI haters.

Yeah, I agree with PapaCheeks too.

The core gameplay loop in TF1 is absolute perfection.

The relationship and interplay between pilot & Titan is just so satisfying.

The only thing, ONLY thing that annoys me is the smart pistol - but even then it's just annoying, not game breaking, and I can still pwn a SP user no problem with my car + stim combo.

I haven't played TF2 yet, but I'm mostly worried about LTS, or lack thereof - with no shields, and no light/fast, medium/medium, heavy/slow Titans to choose from and customize, I can't imagine it being the fun, balanced, simple yet deep experience TF1 provided.

who are you on PC in TF1?

I used to be one of the main / top LTS players too... [US west and EU west servers]

yeah, i heard those complaints a lot after TF1 released, and would argue the same thing.

we didn't need "MORE GUNZ!!!", because the guns available all balanced one another out PERFECTLY.

it was just the most simplistically deep and balanced gameplay loop ever created in an online FPS.

i can appreciate many people felt they just needed "more to do", but maybe more visual customization could have accomplished that?

just in shock right now that they messed with their perfect game so much...

all i wanted was a SP campaign, prettier graphics, and more people to play with... that's all.

Lol It's me Charles ACETHEOUTLAW. Didn't know u had a gaf account.

For those playing. It worried me than maps I've seen in videos are too open, it seems you won't have much space for wall running. It's this an issue in the game or is the hook a good replacement?

I am actually having to fight myself internally to convince myself that I love this. 1,000+ hours in R1, far and away my favorite Multiplayer game of all time, but this is... not the same.

I don't think I have ever been in such denial before. Surely I'm just missing something....
right?

It's probably my single biggest issue with the game. The maps just don't seem designed with player movement in mind at all. The grappling hook is really cool and I could imagine it being incredible of the first games maps, but the 2 maps in this test are kind of terrible.

The slowed movement hurt pilot combat, A LOT. It is super easy to goose people because of the slow and low eject, and it is a lot harder to to air strafe or eject stim (if it is possible at all).

due to the lack of long range precision weapons to deal with pilots poking from afar.
The slowed movement really kills pilot combat and the easy gooses are funny lol, but in all honesty if you still stim while ejecting they shouldn't goose you.

The carbine can still kill from distance, you just have to get used to it trust me. The carbine is actually the one thing that didn't fuck up lol it's still a rewarding gun to use

"Wallhanging is a perk now"

The fuck? Who? Why?
This is such a godsend you have no idea. Veterans have been craving for this change for so long. The wallhang always interrupted gun fights when you accidently jumped and ADS only to wallhang.

Right??

Jesus Christ.

How did they fuck this up so bad?

Respawn/OG IW are one of my favorite devs, but holy shit. They had such a clear path to success with this game, and it's like they actively chose every wrong turn along the way.
They can easily right this ship, it's not too far off from being a great game.

Yooo, looks like godhops have been reincarnated:

Looks like you need to prep a slide before you hit the ground, then jump immediately. We on now.
Everyone has discovered this now. It works but only with stim which tapers off too quick and then doesn't replenish fast enough. If they fix stim this would make the lack of true bhops a nonissue

Now it's going to be really interesting to see what happens when people see this video and conclude power cell is the only way to go if they want to use stim more than a few times a game because it's the only way to really go fast in the game

Every other perk is completely useless now because it takes forever to replenish without power cell (which still takes longer than it should). No one is going to want to use anything else. In titanfall 1 you didn't need powercell, even if you had stim, tons of people used stealth, quick reload because stim still came back at a reasonable time. this isn't the case now.

they really have no choice but to change this

I absolutely love Respawn/IW - they are a great bunch of passionate folks making awesome shooters, but it just seems like TF2 had a lot of external pressure to change the formula. A lot of people (people that didn't play) complained about bots - and now the game feels empty.

Also, how come it feels like it takes forever to charge up a Titan? I am used to getting 2 or 3 Titans a game, but now it's barely 1.

Overall, I am optimistic they will take the feedback to heart and change things up. I bought an Xbox to for Titanfall specifically and played the beta/retail version for hundreds of hours.

Because there's no timer counting down any more. Now its just based on kills and objective, instead of time and kills & objectives like in titanfall 1.

TF1 you always got a titan after 2 minute 30 (or whatever it was) and you could get it faster by killing stuff. That's not the case in TF2. Also there's less bots which doesn't help either, but the timer is the biggest reason.

Anyone else on XBone having this keep switching from installing to queued and stalling out without continuing to download? Why can't anything just work on this console?

Best way to build your Titan is to attack enemy Titans. Rodeoing in particular builds the meter super fast. I've gotten 3 Titans in many Bounty Hunt games with this method.

Can we talk about I-Frames on Titans when doing executions? Last night I dropped a Titan on top of an enemy Titan while it was performing an execution and it took 0 damage. Also, while I was performing an execution I was getting blasted in the back but when I finished the animation I hadn't taken any damage.

For the amount of time it takes to perform an execution it seems a bit ridiculous for the Titan to be immune to damage. Not sure if anyone else has run in to this, but thoughts GAF?

That is right - I should have been more observant.

Hmm, maybe there was some kind of glitch going on. Rodeo has always been something I love doing haha.

Thanks for the info folks.

yeah the most effective way to build meter/titan now is to redeo and attack enemy titans. That or completely massacring an entire wave in bounty hunter lol

I'm going to keep an open mind about it and not rush t ojudgement on a game that is just in the technical testing phase.

Titanfall 1 was tweaked and modified a lot post-release, and virtually every time it made the game better. So, I think that if they get feedback about the game speed feeling slower (something that really set TF1 apart from other shooters coupled with the free movement) then I think they'll see them re-implement that.

Titanfall 1 was such a breath of fresh air for shooters, even if the game was a little thin otherwise. It's one of the first shooters that actually felt fresh to me. So I'd be disappointed if the general gaming community finally gets a Titanfall game and some of that freshness is lost.

Gonna try this soon. Reminding me of the changes from MW1-2. Ruined the series for me ever since. All they needed to do was refine the TItanfall gameplay and add new maps, weapons, etc.

Can't wait to try this tonight !

I'm a little worried as i played hundred of hours of Titanfall and these impressions don't look too good.

I hope they don't change the formula too much and especially the controls because Titanfall without the amazing controls, fast fluid animations, Titans, wall running, well designed maps, simplicity at first but deep gameplay... is not Titanfall.

I don't want another COD, we already have that, i want what makes Titanfall special.

So what I'm getting from all the impressions is that the PC version will be deader than Battlefront in a few weeks and I should get the PS4 version instead.

Making choices you may not agree with is something you see with every sequel. They are trying to reach a larger audience, only time will tell if it's truly a mistake on their part. There's a reason so many dropped off from playing the game, changes are expected.

Just like COD and Battlefront. Dead after a few weeks, especially playlists that aren't TDM.

People abandoned the first because of the lack of content, unlocks and customization, it wasn't about gameplay. They are already fixing the content concern by adding a campaign, and lots of stuff to customize, it isn't necessary to change the gameplay this drasticaly.

Click the link in my post a few posts back, it will take you where you need to go.

Thanks for the post. I couldn't find it on smartglass and the main xbox site is blocked at work. It's good to know I can go around to the MS store now since the stores are linked.

If anyone is up for grouping up over the weekend just hit me up on xbl. GT is Iceman829

Watching more streams, titan combat really comes down to who has a core super and who does not, someone dropped their titan and pretty much lost half it's health without warning or a way to evade the beam.

The menu background really screams modern warfare 2 to me, it just looks like it's trying to match it.

I'm kinda digging it. The movement and visuals could be better. But overall not bad. I'm sure they will make improvements.

man these impressions sound hella disappointing :(

removing the titanfall timer-system and slowing down movement are making me consider cancelling my preorder. gonna download beta later though to see how much i enjoy it.

but personally i think Titanfall 1 was basically perfect as is. Just needed more content. A lot of the gameplay was already refined so well tho.

It's different, but I really enjoyed my time with the beta. Its kind of like going from MW1 to MW2, that's the best way in can put it

When did anyone mention the PC? The test isn't even happening there, these are all console impressions. Personally, I played a ton of the first game on PC, then a ton on Xbox once the PC population died, and I'm playing the test on PS4.

Another thing I forgot to mention in my earlier post, but holy shit does the new assassination animation take ages. What was wrong with doing a quick 180° of their head like the first game, or at least replacing it with something that took just as long?

Yeah this is true but the core movement of Titanfall was superb for both titans and pilots so the tweaking was minimal and mainly had to do with balancing weapons. This has some serious issues with movement while the weapons feel balanced.

Other things that baffle me is the fact that anything remotely enjoyable is curbed in one form or another.

Take for example Ion's ordinance the Laser Shot- so rewarding and fun to use yet you can't use it while vortex shielding or reloading. Why? Original Titanfall allowed you to deploy your tactical during both scenarios. Being able to think quickly and be on your toes while doing two things at once is what separates good players from the bad players.

The original Titanfall played as fast as your brain and hands could muster, this isn't like that. This is more in the line of other shooters where you're thinking faster than the game can handle and so you need to slow down.

I am excited to try this. I absolutely loved the first. It is the first FPS that I feel motivated to actually rank all the way up (not there yet, just need to get 10 MVP's and then I can regenerate - Halo 5 has sidetracked me).

The first had the best movement in the game. It truly felt like they achieved the goal of "a minute to learn but a lifetime to master." It seems that every time I play, I learn a new trick or figure out how to do something a little better.

Yea, no.

The timer for 2:30 minutes that counts down in titanfall1, was nice because if you were not killing titans or pilots you could still kill grunts to decrease the time.

This now is purely only on player performance. Which sucks.

Glad you like it, but your in this thread seriously touting this game as great when a lot of the veteran players who have hundred's of hours invested in titanfall 1 have serious issues with it that are 100% valid.

I played a lot of Titanfall on the Xbox One and it was one of the reasons I bought an Xbox. I've played countless hours of it and was really excited about the tech test. I played 5 games last night and I'm really disappointed with what I've seen so far. I'll be giving it another go with friends over the weekend to see if I've changed my mind.

I really dislike that Titans are now hero characters instead of being customisable. It just seems like a step back to me.

The game feels a lot slower than the first game. That might be to do with the map design not being really tailored to pilots but something feels off about the movement and aiming to me.

For a game centered around Titans they are fucking up by making it take so long to get one in this game. They need to go back to the old formula, this new shit sucks.

What I mean is that history is going to repeat. Like Battlefront before it, this game is mainly focused on getting a more casual console audience, and will simply not have a sustainable population on PC. You yourself even mentioned that the PC population died for the first Titanfall.
