Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Technical Test Impressions (XB1/PS4)

Grappling hook seems alright in my book.

I love the walking backward animation.

Titanfall 1 was my favorite FPS game since Bad Company 2. This game does not feel like Titanfall at all. :( Very disappointed.

I almost feel heartbroken because i went into this expecting the same thrill the first game gave me, and I was immediately let down. I feel like the movement mechanics were overhauled, but not in a good way, and that is detrimental to the game as a whole. Everything else is dependent on this, and because of that, pretty much every thing comes off as severely lacking.

I feel as if every gun in the game is the same, and fires way too fast. It's pretty much like every gun in the game is an SMG. It's too easy to kill and it's too easy to die, depending on where you are in the map. Which leads me to realize that the maps are terribly designed, and it feels kind of like random objects and buildings placed around without any overall layout to them.

Titans seem a little overpowered at this point, yet somehow vulnerable enough to be defeated quickly in 2v1s. In Titanfall 1, Titans felt almost perfectly balanced in the sense that you could feel the effects of a 1v1 battle, and in a 2v1 you could hod your own just long enough to escape/survive, or to have an ally Titan aide you. I can't quite place it, but something is very different in this game when it comes to Titan mechanics.

There's a whole lot of stuff about this game that just doesn't feel right, at least in comparison to the first game. Maybe someone can explain better.

I hope more people learn about the cores that you can grab from other titans. I'm always grabbing the cores and jumping on my teammates titan to heal them but no one ever does the same for me :/

I hate to say it but I think they feel the player base is way smarter than we actually are. Between batteries, snatchable cores, the way-too-complicated bounty hunt mode, speed boost pilot options you have to loadout for, and a million other things the difference 2-3 players who know what they are doing vs a team of noobs is going to be insane.

I mean in Overwatch, with a really simple "escort the payload!" mechanic it still feels like some players just never really understand. I can't imagine the raging in TF2 when half your team plays every mode like its team deathmatch.

It wasn't too bad in TF1 since most people just played attrition and there weren't really many gimmicks to exploit other than killing grunts to get your titan faster.

The game just feels really poor in comparison to the first one. The fact that there is no bots detracts from the game play totally. Really not impressed...and it is kind of depressing to be honest.

Got into my first ever couple games and liking it so far.
Movement takes a lot of getting used to. Titans are cool to get in and mess things up with!

But Titan build up seems to take a while, especially because I suck at the game right now lol

I didn't realize it before, but this might be exactly what I was hoping TF2 would be.

MW2 was unbalanced and insane and broken and fucking amazing.

Indeed, exactly what made it so fun. It was just a crazy game that didn't take itself seriously. Balance isn't something that's inherently fun.

For instance, Destiny is more "balanced" now, but PVP is no where near as fun as it was in Year 1.

Or for me what nearly killed COD, I fucking hated MW2.

Thankfully, you're pretty much an outlier ;)

What are those using the Xbox controller assigning to their paddles?

I'm using jump on the left and sprint on the right, but thinking about going to crouch on the right, because that slide is juicy.

I only played like 20-30 hours of the first one and this doesn't really feel like it at all, seems they've moved the game much closer to CoD. Controls also feel really weird to me, fast when moving around but aiming down the sights is super slow.

I'm using jump on right crouch on left, works great.

Yeah, when I get the ADS right my hip fire feels super fucked up and high sensitivity. I tried changing the aim type/sensitivity but nothing feels right.

I agree with others in that this game feels notably different than Titanfall, and not in a good way. There is something off about the combat flow and balancing that was just so spot on in the first game. The map design is poor, the Titans feel less consequential, and the lack of AI in the Hardpoint mode strips away some of the tension... The maps just feel empty without them.

Not to mention that the removal of first person Titan entry animations is a bewildering and poor choice!

The core gameplay is still solid as ever, and I do like the rope mechanic, but I'm just not feeling it like I did with the first game.

Will give if another shot next weekend.

I don't know how I feel about this game. It's not quite clicking for me. At least not the modes with Titans. That is pretty sad in a game called Titanfall.

Is it me or is the Assault Rifle weird? It's nowhere the precision from TF1 for me...
It's weird, yes but the aiming is easier. With the reduced TTK you're picking people much easier than in the first game. Im going 30+ on each pilot v pilot game mode easily.

Guys who are playing this... as a BIG Titanfall 1 player...

can anyone link me gameplay this isn't from someone complete garbage?

edit: No bots?

=( omg that's horrible

Enjoyed my first two games: the melee hit recognition being balls, however, still hasn't changed from the TF1 days.

The third-person animations can go, though. Entering your Titan in first person was a lot more badass.

Grapple hook is cool.

Now I just need Attrition and Frontier Defense and I'm set.

I need to play Attrition before I make my verdict, but yeah so far it's disappointing. The grappling hook really messed with the game balance, imo. The first game had you chaining wall runs together and leaping from building to building, but now the map design has been changed to incorporate the grappling hook and it just feels totally different. You're on the ground more often than not and the satisfaction of leaping between buildings in one fluid movement just isn't there. The grappling hook itself isn't that fun to use either.

And yeah, the lack of bots + lack of music really makes the game feel empty. I still had fun, and I'll be picking it up day one - especially because the single player looks better than I expected - but I feel like they changed too much from the first game.

If you rodeo an enemy Titan for the first time, it will pull out their battery core and drop it on the ground next to them. You can pick it up and take it to an allied Titan, including your own, to give it a nice Shield.

True, but you don´t drop the core, you keep it. You only drop it, when you get killed, so other pilots can pick it up.

I like the bounty hunt mode, once I figured how it worked. It is a welcome successor of the Titanfall 1 Grund killing mode (forgot the name).

Also, the unlock and progression system is quite smart.

Forget eject, it is straight ticket to death, just leave your Titan when you are doomed. Also picking up a battery when you are doomed won't return your Titan to normal state. Grapple Hook needs a nerf against Titans.

The amount of people who leave mid match is ridiculously high. I've yet to play a game with a full lobby for more than a few minutes. After that it ends up being extremely lopsided with one team being full and the other having between 1-3 players.

I agree with a lot of TF1 vets that the game feels 'off'. That said, I'm hoping it's a cumulative by product of what they've chosen to show.

Ie, only two maps, only two Titan types, only a few abilities, etc.

If every map is built around the grappling hook, for example, then why even have the other options for gear? Hopefully there will be maps that are less advantageous for grapplers, and more advantageous for those who like wall-running chains.

I do like that you can immediately tell what you're dealing with based on Titan silouettes, rather than having to get into combat with them first to really get a sense of what weapons and abilities they're packing.

But some of the changes are just dumb. 3rd person Titan entries? No thank you.

Anyone know how the Xbox version runs? Any resolution numbers?

Might try this out on both ps4 or x1 but think I'll have more friends playing this particular game on xboxs, thanks!

No concrete numbers but from the people that played it (including me) it is not bad. Not 1080p but not a mess either, bet is on 900p. Runs pretty solid, some framedrops during heavy action but this is pre-alpha so expect that.

Amped Hardpoint feels really weak without AI Grunts. It's mostly just Pilots vs Pilots and it takes forever for anyone to get a Titan. It's like they all start dropping down right before the match is about to end.

Dev confirmed on reddit apparently and they will be decreasing the amount needed for titans in that mode
I'm more interested in them returning AI Grunts to the mode.

Game is a mess, maps suck real bad, health is waaaay too low. Feel like they're trying to pander to the CoD masses when they should just build upon TF1.

Hate to say it, but I'm going to pass on this game. Was so hyped for it, not anymore.

This seems like a thing that will never, ever be used in most random matches. As someone else said, I feel like Respawn is overestimating their playerbase here.

Just played like half a dozen hardpoint matches without seeing a Titan pre-escape. This should be an easy fix though so I guess it's not too worrying. All of the titan changes seem shitty though. No shields, the battery system, the lack of customization and weird hero class stuff, etc. Little more worried about that...

They really need to increase the TTK for pilots and decrease the time for Titans.

The interplay and battles between pilot and Titans, pilots scurring around through buildings and around roof-tops, chipping away at Titans as those Titans tried to take them out and deal with other enemy Titans... that push and pull WAS Titanfall. It's the experience that made it feel unique.

The over emphasis on pilot vs pilot combat makes it feel like a COD clone.

Its still fun, but it seems to have lost some of the magic of the first one. Like I never got that adrenaline rush moment like the first one.

It's something I use for allies, even holding X to call out to the Titan that I have a battery that will restore health and give you a shield. They don't listen but that's what the grappling hooks is for.

As for my teammates? I sat there punching a pilot with a battery on his back hoping he'd get the message, alas the concept was too deep.

playing Titanfall 1 for 8 months

my honest thoughts with Titanfall 2 from the test beta?

it's Lost Planet (capcom) with Call of Duty skins:

-grappling hook really changed too much for me, especially the maps, I can't fly all over anymore without walls to run

-the pacing of game modes made the game feel worse for me

I'm gonna keep playing to get used to it then give it another go next weekend after understanding all the new mechanics

Does the game ever explain this? I certainly missed it if it did.

Yeah, I got that feeling too - they might have tweaked a little too much and accidentally made another COD game. The beta is making me want to boot up Titanfall 1 instead. Not the best sign.

So damn disappointing. I mean, I know its an alpha, but even if things are tweaked between now and then, theres just so many bad choices that were made. And a lot of changes are fundamental and probably cant/wont be changed. All IMO, of course, but it appears Im definitely not alone in my thoughts.

Its just so jarring. Id love to get the rationale behind some of the changes, maybe I could understabd a little bit then! Haha

Yeah, I really miss being able to wallrun in a lot of places. These maps just suck. Too much open spaces and waaay too many little corridors. TF1 I felt had a good balance. But this is just... bad.

Just about ask about the bolded above..

I've only watched via Twitch at the moment but it looks like TTK is really long compared to the TF1.

You would assume TTK would be quick because of how fast paced they want the game.

Man after reading these impressions I am pretty disappointed with people's thoughts. I will give the game a go tonight but at this point I am expected to be let down.
