Trump to African Americans: "What do you have to lose?, You're living in poverty"

Also enjoyed the Clinton campaign pointing out the absurdity of a birther trying to appeal to African Americans. There's no coming back from that.

What honestly was the point in handling Playdough? Does Playdough absorbs water or something?
Speaking as a parent, if my child's toys were all destroyed and we had to live in a tent I would probably cry tears of joy if we received Playdough. On the other hand, he handed them out for 49 seconds mainly to his running mate in what was clearly an attempt at scoring political points.

I bet he handed out yellow play-doh, the worst color play-doh

Holy shit, his appeal to black people was in Eaton County? Do we have proof Donald Trump has ever been in the same room with more than his black person?

I'm pretty sure this still sounds really racist, even to white people. Don't buy the appeals to the i cant vote for a racist crowd thing.

Back in 1991, he kind of implied he had seen several at the same time: “I’ve got black accountants at Trump Castle and at Trump Plaza. Black guys counting my money! I hate it. The only kind of people I want counting my money are short guys that wear yarmulkes every day.”

This is the opinion piece where I read that quote yesterday btw, and it's pretty solid.

Hey African Americans, what do you have to lose? Perhaps if you start voting Republican in mass they will stop trying to suppress your voting rights!! It's a win win!!

This is fucking gross

The implicit notion of "What do you have to lose? (Your lives can't possibly get any worse or better. No one's gonna bother helping you either way)" is what gets me most.

I know he's not actually bothering to appeal to black voters, just trying to seem slightly less racist, but the idea that there exists not only a presidential candidate, but a team behind him that think that this is acceptable rhetoric is mind-blowing.

You know, you'd think nothing this motherfucker says would surprise or upset me at this point. Yet here I am, feeling both, once again.

If you really think about it, you realize Trump doesn't have a "black outreach" team and is just talking straight from his "big brain".

on a side note...

This guy is the worst person ever nominated by either party for president. Worst in every criteria imaginable. Intelligence, policy (which he has none), likeability, temperance, eloquence, looks, oration, maturity.

This is not even taking my political bias into account. On paper, his assery has shown no one politically skilled would ever side with him. The GOP, are undyingly loyal to the GOP and even their major players are staying away from him. The GOP would support Hitler if it benefitted them politically, but many GOP big names have shied away from him.

He is the most un-qualified person EVER to have ever held the title of "republican nominee for president"

Before or after 1865?

Woodrow Wilson was also more evil than Trump.

To show the utter hypocrisy of "All Lives Matter", most "All Lives Matter" folks also says "Blue Lives Matter". Which means they know full well "Black Lives Matter" doesn't mean "Only Black Lives Matter", and thus, "All Lives Matter" really means "All Lives Matter except the Black ones."

So what's the verdict, does he know what he's saying is shitty or is he just fucking clueless? I have to imagine it's a mix of both, with a slight skew to 'I know what I'm doing.'

If this is the 'new' messaging he's using, it's not better at all than his previous efforts.

I would say we should make a list and tweet it to Trump but I'm not a fan of sending out 30 cut up tweets one by one. I'm being generous with just 30.

Dan Rather on Rachel Maddow Show explained Trump's strategy well tonight:

Trump's Black outreach message is not aimed at African-Americans at all,
his message is aimed at independent White voters who dislike racism and his message is aimed to soften Trump's image among those moderate Whites.

basically Trump is targeting whites who are easier to fool on a "softer image" pivot
It makes sense. Even the shallowest outreach is enough to give people peace of mind. They can now have a talking point or two.

He basically said all black people are poor, unemployed, and uneducated...... So what is the worse he could do to us?

this is a disgusting human being

way to swing a group of millions... what do you have to lose? you are all doing shit ... with me things might get better

he has no plan... he has no morals

I love all the Republicans who have been bemoaning identity politics for the last however long. And now here's Trump not just playing identity politics, but pitting one group of people against another

This doesn't surprise me at all, that he just assumes black voters are all living in poverty and are uneducated. This motherfucker. It pains me that he's the actual candidate in 2016. What the fuck, my country?

I'm so glad we live in a post-racial society.

His rhetoric is dehumanizing and his statistics are inaccurate. I hope everyone that supports him loses all of their political and social capital.

this is a nice way of putting it.

The obvious answer of what they have to lose is the greatest asset blacks have; higher voting representation than their actual population, despite the high incidence of incarcerated/non-voting felons. The Republicans would like nothing more than to work their will in NC and elsewhere to keep former convicts from ever being able to vote again and to stop blacks from voting where possible.

"What do you have to lose" is probably one of the worst arguments you can have. Like definitely not something a would be President should even say.

What do you have to lose..? More like.. What do you have to gain?

Why the hell would someone vote for/support a candidate who has no plan to improve conditions for said people and surrounds himself with racist assholes? What exactly would be the motivation to do so? Ouch.

Well that's what his party WANTS black people to be. When the police don't have free reign to kill, rape, rob, and abuse black people on a whim.

In the world of Trump voters, if black people absolutely must exist, then they exist for the amusement and pleasure of white people.

Though what the Trump said isn't new.

It's sad that our choice is keep shit the same for us (shitty). Or make shit FAR worse.

The generalizations from Trump on the situation of Black people in American are indicative of someone who's never spent time with us.

But let's be real, he's not really doing this for Black people or even to appeal to us. His camp wants him to appear to *try* to reach out. As that will appeal to many on-the-fence White voters.

Things blacks lose, by voting for Trump instead of Hillary.

- racial justice
- criminal justice reform
- labor rights
- gun control
- the aca

All of which are not a part of Trump's policy positions: https://www.donaldjtrump.com/positions

We ain't got most of that shit now...
We still ain't voting Trump, lol

If that's the case you'd think his attempt would be a much better one. Only a complete moron thinks he cares about black people. He's gunna have to sell it at least a LITTLE..

So, um, Donny, I don't know how to tell you this, but...

100% of the black men who've held the position you're applying for have a much, much higher level of education and vastly more impressive work experience in related fields than you do.

It's for the purposes of talking points. If he actually DID reach out to black people he'd lose the core of the GOP. Remember modern GOP conservatism at its root is code words, dog whistles, and policies designed to hurt black people to gain racist white votes. Everything else builds off of that.
