Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Technical Test Impressions (XB1/PS4)

Feels like I dont even have to care when someone rodeos me the first time because its not like they can just bring me down themselves. And without shields, leaving the titan would probably be worse because it'll be in doomed state before I can try to get back in from normal attacks on it anyway.

And rodeoing those bounty titans? You have to do it six pr seven times to kill them. Is that the same for player titans? Makes whole mechanic worthless if so.

damn I'm kinda disappointed about what I'm hearing so far. also from gameplay footage it looks like so much less is happening at any one point compared to OG titanfall. The chaos was a huge part of that games' feel imo.

Well the whole game struggled with keeping people in. It's obvious that some change was needed and there is plenty room for change.

Honestly I don't think that had anything to do with the core mechanics though. The lack of content has consistently been the one big thing commented on for folks stopping to play. Then you've got platform specific reasons like no server browser on PC etc. Sure you did have folks commenting on AI but looking at that list above the majority of those just seem like changes for changes sake.

Titanfall 1 never felt like a warzone. The AI is and was dumb real dumb. So it really didn't make the field more alive.

I do agree that getting your titan is slower, but Respawn could just add a timer that's faster in modes without bots.

Black Ops 3 really doesn't have anything that comes close to the whole titan mechanic.

I prefer to whole using movement to avoid getting hit and the map as cover.

I'd have to respectively disagree - running by groups of Ai talking to each other, having banter etc with one another really added to the atmosphere massively. It broke up the silence between combat with other players and really made you feel like you were rushing to something bigger and more important than what they were dealing with

Really disappointed that they've been removed

Double Take living up to it's potential.

I just realized TF2 doesn't seem to have any kind of multi-kill notification, or head shot notification. Massive oversight.

All I can make judgments on is what I see, and every TF1 clip I watch vs. what I'm playing in the Tech Test tells me that TF1, in Attrition at least, was way more active and loud, with much more player/AI interaction throughout the map, more constant action, and more of an impression of a battle happening all around you. Bounty Hunt and Amped Hardpoint in Titanfall 2 have significant moments of downtime, or in the case of Amped Hardpoint, nothing but downtime if you want to win. And Pilot vs. Pilot is not why I'm interested in this game, so the increased player count in that playlist doesn't matter to me.
I dislike Bounty Hunt. But if you look at amped Hardpoint. The reason for the down time is due to amping the point. The amping mechanic is the issue here. I prefer hardpoint of titanfall 1. You are constantly busy with going from A to B which doesn't feel like down time due to the movement system and the map design, at least that was the case in titanfall 1.

You can cancel out of it. At least once you board right away. I used it as an escape once.

You can cancel up to a certain point. After which you are locked in and are ejected backwards from the titan. You can't pick your exit vector like you can in the first game. More to the point, you can't wait on top waiting to strike.

I agree with that, but you could add that to the game even with the current mechanics.

Yeah, I wasn't sure about that. I just ever tried to cancel once from it. I think if they go the battery route, they should either make taking the battery out as an optional thing (continuously press "X" or something to grab and pull it out) or you can try to attack it a different way, or just rodeo it and wait).

Check out this clip of Papercuts and myself pretty much winning a game of Amped Hardpoint by doing literally nothing even though the other team had 2 points for at least a few minutes:

This is not a good game mode right now, and even if it wasn't flawed, I don't know if I'm a fan of Domination in a game like Titanfall. I want to move freely and dynamically through a warzone like the game used to look like. Titanfall 2 doesn't allow me to do that most of the time.

Which leaves the question, why and how do you get springboarded off the back of a titan? Makes 0 sense.

I made a list, yall. Who asked for these changes? Certainly no one who loved Titanfall.

  • [*] No recharging titan shields
  • Limited titan loadout customization
  • Slower titan movement
  • Slower player movement
  • Removed and reduced NPC presence
  • Lower TTK
  • Rodeoing is now completely passive
  • Third person animations for things that used to be (awesome) first person animations
  • No titan timer
  • Scorestreaks instead of burn cards
  • No attrition
  • Glowing players

I'm ok with the new ways of recharging titan shields. Having pilots grab "batteries" and bringing them back to friendly titans adds a layer of cooperation and a new goal ingame.
Everything else is making the game worse, though. I'd also add the lack of handgun as a side weapon.

Yeah I kinda forgot to put a few words in. This problem doesn't really exist with Hardpoint in Titanfall 1, because the whole amping mechanic not being there.

This also feel somewhat exploitable.

If I see someone rodeo me I usually just sit and let it happen now, after they dismount spin and punch. They even get highlighted with an icon of your battery...so if you look at the start vs. the end I gained ~30% core and a shield for his trouble.

How does this gun work? I've played with it and it feels nice. Do you still just use the center of the screen to aim?

The AI wasn't dumb, they just died to easily.

The lag is terrible, I'm at 12ms but people are warping all over.

This game on the whole is bad. Its like playing some sort of Black Ops clone with occasional titans thrown in. The grapple sucks too.

Its very passive, camping for the killstreak. Also the amping, it means you have to camp instead of traversal. What were they thinking?

If you're rolling with friends then it's a great mechanic but asking random pubbies to do this is crazy at a design level.

Especially since it comes at the cost of some of the awesome duels you could have in Titanfall 1. Hoping a teammate will give you a shield or that you'll have the time in battle to do it yourself doesn't feel fun at all.

damn shame you didn't get the chance to play titanfall. the movement in that game was incredible, and man some of the moments i had in there...phew

Just figured out that there are over 400k people on Xbox One who have tried this tech tech test.

The ADV Advocate Network you are not able to leave. There are currently 417,323 people in that network.

I suspect the PS4 number will be higher, so must be pushing towards 1m in total?

Anyone able to check? (go to My Networks and see how many people are in the ADV network)

I always figured "Ehh, no problem. I'll be able to play the much improved sequel in a few years when the exclusivity deal's up."

:(

Why disco. Tell me why the vidyas hurt me so.

Have they really got rid of being able to grip the wall mod run and just hang there? I had TF for both PC and X1 but not liking this at all.

Wtf happened to the speed and movement.

Damn this game is SOOO GOOOOD!! Is like a little bit slower Advance Warfare but with titans, AI, moves fast, is agile, the grapling hook works well, jumping on titans (enemy or friendly) is amazing, calling a titan is amazing. The weapons are really good. Love the progression system. Everything! Been a FPS player since DOOM ad played them all and this is really great. I <3 it Going to play all day!

It's now a selectable perk

Considering how weak both players and titans now are, it's hard to believe it's a sequel. Feels more like a prequel. I mean what kind of military organisation would nerf their giant robots and not gove them Shields?

There is something seriously fucking wrong with the connection on this game. Played Overwatch for about two hours with no issue, and then the connection ges so bad with Titanfall 2 that I'm getting killed while in a blind spot and then then I get booted.

I just made a huge mistake guys

I played a round of TF1 after binging on (and starting to feel okay about) TF2.

It's like the shackles were lifted. NO MORE MOLLASES, I COULD MOVE FREELY! I COULD DODGE AND JUKE EVEN ON OPEN GROUND! MOBILITY IS REWARDED RATHER THAN PUNISHED! I DON'T BLOODY GLOW ON THE ENEMY'S SCREEN! TITANS WERE PLENTIFUL AND EFFECTIVE! RODEOING WAS A FUN GAME OF CAT AND MOUSE! I COULD FLY AROUND THE MAP WITHOUT GETTING INSTANTLY SHOT DOWN! MAPS ENCOURAGE PARKOUR! AI GRUNTS PROVIDE COVER AND FODDER FOR KEEPING THE PACE OF THE GAME FOCUSED ON ACTION!

Please don't wake me from this dream.

Also, first person animations are 1000x more badass than 3rd.

You guys are killing me

I guess i'll try the game during the next test, how in the fuck have they ruined this so much

So none of the old Titan's are coming back? If not I'm going to miss the Chain Gun that was the only Titan weapon I used.

The Titans are like heroes from Overwatch, they have a set of skills and a weapon you can't change. All the revealed Titans are based on Titans from R1 aesthetically though, Scorch is a modified Ogre, Ion is a retrofitted Atlas and Ronin is a Stryder variant.

Well said. This is my list too, more or less. The game in it's current state doesn't even come close to the original. I don't think I've ever been so hyped for a game and then been this disappointed. I thought there was a chance they might mix things up for the worse but I never thought they could possibly mess up the game so thoroughly to the point of completely ruining what made the original such an amazing game. So disappointing...this was going to be the game I poured 1000+ hours into. Now I just hope it gets delayed and they go back to the drawing board (hint - TF1 + more customization + more unlocks for the carrot chasers + single player for the people clamoring for it, is a winning formula).
