Still, there's no way that Trump can de-couple his staunchly xenophobic agenda with a "pivot" that includes amnesty without looking like a lunatic. Nobody's gonna buy into it who weren't already actively looking for reasons to support him.
Even worse than trying to rope in independents is that Trump's base is fired up almost single handily about this one issue. They've given him a pass on all his old pro-Hillary statements, they're not going to stick around for Trump becoming a leftist open borders sellout like Jeb! and Rubio.

Change the policies, get in and then execute the real plan.

Yeah, the guy who won't uphold treaties. Is definitely fit for the job it is to enforce the law, which includes treaties. Which is law. Treaties are law, and he said he wouldn't enforce them. Trump never actually said he'd deport all illegal immigrants. Remember the big, beautiful door he used to talk about? Trump will spin this as saving money on transportation costs, he is a persuasive genius.
If in the end his platform has the most benefits to everyday people, is pretty consistent and his opponent continues to be a chronic liar, I think you'll be surprised at what people end up believing.
