Mario shows up at Rio 2016 Closing Ceremony

A stronger presence at E3 (or at least a dozen Nintendo directs) would do more for Nintendo's global presence then this bizarre stunt at Rio. At least at E3 Nintendo would be assured that gamers and the enthusiast media would be paying attention. While at Rio, it's a mix bag and nobody was watching the closing ceremony anticipating co-branding with Mario. Really, Nintendo at Rio seems like a continuation of their failed 'blue ocean' strategy, trying to chase the casual crowd that made the Wii a success without realising that the industry has moved on.

Are you saying that the Olympics gives you less exposure than E3?

Brand presence is extremely important to a company and this was a good way to do it. If Mario is the mascot for 2020 then that would be so huge for Nintendo.

Mario is trending above Tokio and Japón.

Pokemon Go was also a success so Nintendo is doing okay with the blue ocean crowd.

I mean, what? Sir, i would need some of those good things u are using right now lol.^_^

Is Charizard going to light the Olympic flame in Tokyo?

I hope so.

He is going to had tons of character fighting for that privilege lol. Agumon from Digimon, Ace/Sabo from One Piece(T_T), Roy Mustang, Alibaba from Magi, not to forget the great Mars from Sailor moon.^_^

mate, Nintendo is playing the long game, they don't give a fuck if a bunch of dedicated fans applaud their games at E3, they want to be seen and recognized by the biggest possible crowd and surely the Olympics closing ceremony, an event watched by billions, will give them the exposure they need

only on neogaf LOL

Dude, give up. This is bullshit. Reminding a mainstream audience of their flagship character is not a waste of money or time, and it sure as hell hits a lot more eyeballs than E3 ever could.
All marketing is about sending a message. The only message Nintendo at Rio was "hey look its Abe dressed up as Mario, aren't we a quirky company? lol". However, when you look at the bigger picture, Nintendo still hasn't done anything to address concerns about the NX and what that means for gamers going forward. Getting Mario into the Rio closing ceremony only works if it's a capstone to already successful console; the message falls flat when Mario's cameo is the only thing Nintendo has going for it in an otherwise bad five years.

Peter Pan isn't public domain, that hospital received the copyright to Peter Pan in 1929. Not that it has ever stopped Disney from skirting around the copyright laws and never paying Great Ormond Street Hospital a cent, but I digress...

The point is that as a state run hospital Great Ormond Street would have been part of the British Governments financial contribution to the International Olympic Committee. Conversely, Nintendo as a private corporation would still need to pay its own way into the closing ceremony. Nintendo is a business and so is the International Olympic Committee, marketing costs money and Mario's appearance in Rio is no exception.

Are you really that salty that Mario is the most popular video game character of all time?

you are incredible, thank you.

So, Nintendo sold the mariners to buy this bit of exposure at the Olympics closing ceremony.

Also, more e3 stuff for enthusiast media gets them more global exposure than the closing ceremony of the Olympic games.

wow

Its great to see that Mario apperance can cause people to have a meltdown and post illogical things.

It better be Namie Amuro since she had a Olympic theme song.

Nah. I need Sawano in Olympic lol to trigger a certain somebody.^_^

Lol. U are standing firm on ur view there. I kinda feel i must praise lol.

But no. U are the one who need to look on bigger picture lol. Mario showing in this closing event already lead to their company value increasing again lol. Not to mention, with how this year have been going, their presence is growing bigger and bigger.
And what is the correlation between NX and Nintendo bad year doing with Mario promoting Olympic here? Do u think the marketing department is also done by the devs? Are u that tone deaf?

The devs will still do what they need to do to make NX possible while the marketing team right now also had new task given by former president Iwata and Kimishima now which is to grow Nintendo IP brand out from simple gaming world but to all other business too which is why we see Nintendo joining with Universal to build NIntendo Land. Anime, Manga and all this collab is a much needed thing to make sure the people in the world outside of gaming industry still see and remember Nintendo.

The book is Public Domain everywhere but the UK where GOSH holds the Copyright so I guess I was somewhat wrong in that.

However, you're entirely wrong in that the NHS does NOT own Peter Pan and therefore his inclusion would be considered from a private third party business. GOSH is both a hospital ran by the NHS and an independent Charity aimed at research, treatment, etc; the latter of which is the organization Barrie gifted the rights to in his will before the NHS had even been formed.

So yes, you're implying that a Children's Hospice Charity had to pay out the nose to get the Peter Pan brand in the Olympic ceremony.

God bless you

wait how did they make a functioning war pipe from Japan to Brazil?

Did you not see it drill? It's actually the most vivid version of a warp pipe we've ever seen. I love Mario flipping upside down and almost dropping the ball on the way through. I hope whoever animated that is working on the animated movies for Nintendo.

She could be there, but I got this crazy idea that the soon to be disbanded SMAP will probably reform to perform at the ceremonies in 2020. Would be a perfect excuse for a reunion and all. Japan would go crazy if that happened.

Nintendo didn't let Disney use Mario for Wreck-it-Ralph but they did allow Mario to do this intro.

This is canon.

Doraemon gave it to Mario.

Deepest lore.

Now i want Mario x Dorameon rpg lol. Imagine Mario using tons of Doraemon gadget.^_^

Uukhhh i can't stop the hype lol. Nintendo launching Mario and Detective Pikachu animation movie in 2020 to commemorate Olympic too. The cinemas is going to be filled.^_^

That's amazing.

They don't even need to come up with Olympic mascot for 2020, just have Doraemon and Mario do all the mascotting. :p

They were allowed, but they didn't feel like they had a spot for Mario to be naturally in the movie. At least that was their excuse. I still think Donkey Kong would have been the better fit for the Bowser role since Ralph is most fittingly an expy of him.

I am the king of derailing threads and it's almost never on purpose.

I mean he is almost absolutely confirmed in the second movie.
