Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Technical Test Impressions (XB1/PS4)

Just realized the commentary from your superiors over the radio is gone. One of my favorite things about the original, listening to them talk about kills you get, especially goosers.

I am expecting (hoping) that this is to keep the download size small and some of that stuff will be in the retail game.

I'm struggling to find any worth in the Scorch Titan. We really needed to see the other Titans, but really not seeing anything good with Scorch.

Scorch is very useful for killing pilots who are hiding behind walls. Just throw a scorch shot through a window and watch em burn.

It's also pretty good at distant combat. In close, he's pretty bad unless you have your core ready to blast then you can do some widespread damage.

I somehow managed to drop my Titan into a position halfway across the map... even though I pointed the crosshairs a few meters ahead of my pilot.

It made for a pretty tense dash across the level, that much is for sure.

In my limited play, I had an easy tine killing pilots with Scorch. That huge fireball gives them little chance of escape. But certainly it's a close combat loadout.

It's definitely tough to adjust cause Scorch is SO clearly designed for controlling the ground and providing support.
...That being said, it's long range game is a fucking struggle and then some.

I REALLY think Respawn should have thrown in a more traditional Titan for the Tech-Test... something similar to a default loadout in TF1 IE: Chaingun.
Scorch just feels TOO specialized for the maps other than Boomtown where he does okay as you can dig in and flame chokepoints.

So,

I think these are probably my final thoughts on the beta. I may play it some more over the course of the weekend, but this is where I sit:

1) The shooting mechanics are ok. the TTK is way too short and needs to be improved. The guns are actually all pretty well done though.

2) Pilot upgrades generally feel more important than those in the first game and I really like the amp giving you little bots to lay down around points you need to hold.

3) The grapple hook is too important to be a perk. The maps were clearly built with the grapple hook in mind and should be standard equipment.

4) Movement is better than last weekend. It generally feels pretty good now.

5) The Titans are far far worse than Titanfall. Too slow, not enough boost, no personal shield means once your Titan is low health it is worthless.

6) The gameplay just isn't the same. People are generally camping on spots and it feels very very different from Titanfall. Not hectic enough, not enough moving around. I've seen 3-4 squad mates sticking together to cover entries and exits to areas. Which is something you see in other FPS, but not really Titanfall. I don't know if it's the maps, the objectives, the Titans or the movement. It's probably all of the above.

7) The maps are the single biggest issue with the game. Even if they fixed every single issue above, the maps are just bad. Wide open spaces, choke points, long corridors with little cover. The game modes also encourage sitting on rooftops or poking out of windows and camping.

I don't think this is by any means a terrible no good game. I think it's an ok game. It's probably in line with a sort of bad version of BLOPS with mechs and bad map design. It's just not Titanfall, and it's not a game I really feel compelled to own or add to my collection. With CoD and Battlefield both releasing this Christmas, I want to wish Respawn good luck with this, I just don't see how this is positioned to do very well. It seems destined to run off the people who loved Titanfall, and will likely fail to attract anyone from the CoD audience since it doesn't offer much that CoD does not already have. I'm sure negative feedback all over the internet isn't helping to build hype for their game.

I like Respawn as a company, I hope Titanfall 2 does well for them, I think the way the exit from Activision happened was absolutely criminal, but I seriously doubt I'll be there day 1 unless I hear about massive changes, really good maps or a single player experience that I just have to play. But given where I'm at now, I doubt we'll see much more than mediocre to bad impressions.

I saw a Titan drop and a pilot got in. Maybe my eyes deceived me, idk lol.

More importantly, Rayme confirmed that I am crazy.

There's always the chance of bugs (so you never know!), but in this case very unlikely.

On the craziness I am keeping quiet for now. >_>

You can always call it to your location and hope it survives the trip :p

It feels like it's just an anti infantry Titan, but it's also just easy picking for pilots at long range and any Titan with range just toys with it like nothing. How open the maps are makes it feel worse, you just get pecked at from long range by everyone and can't do a whole lot

I'm not having fun. Win or lose, this game is fucking frustrating. It's fucking bullshit. I don't have as much movement control (I feel like I'm stuck most of the time), I don't know what the hell is happening when I die... And these maps are pure fucking ass. Bounty Hunt is sooooooooo terrible, since it always ends up being the same:

1. People throw 'nades in the initial fight... there's no real reward for killing pilots at this time
2. The 2nd Wave is basically a real Titanfall battle
3. Whoever won the 2nd Wave basically outnumbers the other team with Titans, derp, you can't really make a comeback in this mode unlike you could with Attrition

I can only imagine how horrible CTF would be on each of these 3 maps. It used to be fun killing AI too, squishing them or putting a smoke over their spawn. I have less options in this game, and even so, it's far more frustrating to do with what they left me.

I'm sorry for being so passionate. I LOVE Titanfall, I really do. Just not whatever this one is supposed to be.

EDIT: like, I am swearing so much playing this lmao.

I like the movement now. Not sure how I feel about the bounty hunt mode. Forcing combat in certain areas doesn't feel very great.

Grappling hook should definitely be apart of everyone's move set. The other things just don't compare.

Lack of regen shields is still pretty annoying.

Anyone have a suggestion on how to go about canceling my digital pre-order on PSN / North America? I understand they don't have to do it but I know people have been able to get refunds before in some cases. I'd much prefer to do it via email rather than over the phone if possible.

Attrition needs to return. People are just going for pilot kills.
Honestly, I think the reason for this is two fold:

1) I still don't really know what the hell I'm supposed to do in bounty. It was never clearly explained.

2) Many players just want to try out the movement, weapons, etc during this short beta. Fuck the objectives :)

My exact same feelings..i will not be there day one also. There is still to much missing on what made titanfall..titanfall and not another CoD.

Yeah sums it up for me.
Still crazy that they release it so close to BF1 and COD. Bit cocky imo. Sure it could have worked if Titanfall was already 2 or 3 games in. And had a steady playerbase.

I feel like there HAS to be a true beta in early October now, so they can show off the mechanics updates and pick some maps / titans that have a broader appeal to win some people back.

EDIT: like, I am swearing so much playing this lmao.

I also find there's just too much information on the screen at once which you can clearly see from your screen cap. If it's not pop ups telling me my weapon is ready to be amped, it's telling me which team member's titan is falling, or what my weapon actually does - it's just an information overload and also reduces my ability to see what's going on in the battlefield.

***There are absolutely more than six maps. ***

I don't think we've revealed them all anywhere or actually said how many(?) so I'm gonna shut up, but more than six: yes. Those slots on the website are very misleading, sorry.

Well that's at least something I guess.

Also to reiterate, this game needs Attrition. Bounty Hunt is not a good replacement, and actually not a great mode at all.

3) The grapple hook is too important to be a perk. The maps were clearly built with the grapple hook in mind and should be standard equipment.

Yuuuuup.

I can't playing without the grapple hook in this game. Without it my movement feels extremely limited compared to the first one.

Thank you! Sorry to make you respond to us jumping to conclusions.

Attrition needs to return. People are just going for pilot kills.

I know that I do. It feels better to just have war going on through out the map and accumulate points with kills. Being forced into certain areas only and running back to another fixed point isn't compelling gameplay imo.

The game modes also encourage sitting on rooftops or poking out of windows and camping.

It seems destined to run off the people who loved Titanfall, and will likely fail to attract anyone from the CoD audience since it doesn't offer much that CoD does not already have.

You totally nailed it on all your points and especially in these two. As someone who loved Titanfall I can say unless there is a complete 180 from everything I've played in the beta when the final game comes around, I'll be passing on it... Never thought I would say that about Titanfall. I want Titanfall 2 not Call of Duty:Titanfall

This game really does feel doomed to fail right now. As someone who adores the first game, I'm finding myself playing more out of morbid curiosity than because I am genuinely enjoying myself.

Never thought I'd say that about a sequel to my favorite game ever.

ans once your Titan is low health it is worthless.

.

This is my major issue right now. The game feels built to reward this kind of behavior. Risky moves get punisher severely.

I didn't pick up on it last week but BH is essentially a moba now with 2 creep lanes. So you have players filling moba style roles. Laning, Assassin, Jungler (anti-titan) etc. It's super reserved, and not in the spirit of almost constant swimming the waters of TF1.

PvP and Hardpoint just feel like slower versions of objective modes in a modern CoD game.

I just played a match in OG Titanfall (found a full server hah) and everything is better.

Like, Titan gameplay is a whole awesome game in and of itself. It's crazy how much manoeuvrability I have.

And I just realised, I hate being a Pilot in Titanfall 2. It's horrible. My Grenades feel week, I don't feel like I can get around a Titan at all, I don't have places on the map that's made for me etc. and I really don't like how they took out the super accurate aiming and gave up insane levels of recoil.

I feel like everything they changed is the wet dream of the person who preferred CoD.

And fuck, the UI. I don't know what's what in Titanfall 2. I can kill enemies but I have no feedback as to how many I just killed and what it meant. My Titan charge will increase but I don't know how much by, and I have to look to the bottom left corner to see it.

EDIT: like, I am swearing so much playing this lmao.

I agree in that I feel Bounty Hunt is a pretty poo-poo mode, unfortunately :(

I think i'm having such a solid time cause I've just stuck with Amped Hardpoint. Lovin' it.

Also the map design is a mess in titanfall 2 even the new one boomtown? Good grief such terrible design to small for titans to terrible for pilots and with parkour. I was stuck most of the time. Even the titans feel terrible also weak played a bunch of matches and when i got back to titanfall 1 it just feels great to play it even the mobility.

I don't know what respawn is doing but there design decisions are way worse than i would thought off.

Jumped back in to check the changes. Pilot movement and Titan drop times are both better. Not TF1 right, but certainly better.

Every other flaw remains.

The lack of shields on Titans is even more glaring now and for the life of me, I don't understand the change. Were they afraid that players would be confused with a recharging shield?

Having a recharging shield added a tactical wrinkle to playing as a Titan, and frankly, added a nice dose of Halo's methodical, tactical combat that emphasized intelligent approaches, use of environment, knowing when to retreat, knowing where and what backup you had, etc. Play smart, pick your spots, use your team, and you could use one Titan for the entirety of a match. And it felt great.

Pilot vs Pilot combat is very much the go-go-go, frenetic, see-shoot-dead experience that COD is, and that's great. It's good at it (the TTK is still too short in my book but...), but it was the melding of all the different mechanics involved in fighting as and against Titans and as or against pilots that led to the chaotic, amazing, mutifaceted, 'holy shit!' moments that defined TF1.

And obviously, a big part of making that combination work was brilliant map design. And unfortunately, the maps demonstrated thus far are simply trash.

It hurts. I loved TF1 so much. But this is just such a step backwards, and I'm struggling to rationalize so many of the decisions beyond 'they wanted to make it simpler'. Which sucks. Hard.

Played a few rounds and while the movement speed increase isn't that noticeable (which I'm OK with), the Titan timer is! I think I must've gotten a Titan midway of the first AI grunts in Bounty. Super fast, like in just 2-3 minutes? Dunno. Not complaining though.

2-3 minutes is about what it was in Titanfall 1 without any kills, so sounds good.

Haven't played Tech Test 2 yet, but sad to hear the new map is garbage.. not unexpected though it never looked good.

Bounty Hunt needs to have the base change each time. It being in one area is a little crazy. You already know people will be camping it.

Can we maybe try to agree on what we want changed? I know it's a headache for Respawn but I love Titanfall so much man... Reality hasn't really sunk in yet.

TTK is to low
Shield on Titans
Return of the Titan timer
Better maps (they could dump these 3)
Remove red outline on Pilots
Bring back Attrition
Primary weapons blow

They are still tied to killstreaks which screw that. All you have to do is go play the OG Titanfall. I think its like $5 anyway right now somewhere. We should boycott this shit and day 1 all log in to OG Titanfall.

they are tied to playing the objective and killing other players. They are also on a timer that updates every 5 seconds. This is the correct way to handle this IMO

I'm good for playing OG Titanfall... but no, Titan building is fine. Just pick out your Charge Rifle + Amped and go ham on some enemy Titans...

but if they see you, it's not like you can go anywhere =(

TTK is to low
Shield on Titans
Return of the Titan timer

Remove red outline on Pilots
Bring back Attrition

Titan weapons blow
Anti-Titan weapons are too weak
AI have too much health

I crossed out the ones I won't agree with. Someone can quote me. If you agree with my strikes, remove the line, but if you don't agree, remove the strike.

If everyone were to quote this list once each, we can come to some consensus with similar syntax and semantics.

Underline anything you add.

Can we maybe try to agree on what we want changed? I know it's a headache for Respawn but I love Titanfall so much man... Reality hasn't really sunk in yet.

The maps is the biggest problem most keep bringing up, but there is little that they can do this close to release to fix those, unless they could somehow quickly toss in a bunch of random walls and terrain to make the open fields less open, and provide more parkour opportunities.

TTK is the other big issue. Amped weapons are stupid, should not even be in game, and general weapon damage is too much, all weapons could be toned down to decrease ttk

What I would like changed:

- First-person camera for Titan entry
- No Pilot outlines
- Titan Smoke is default or on a simple timer
- Grappling hook as an innate loadout
- Ability to customize the Pilot body without it being linked to any ability. Don't like using the robot class for the hook.

Obviously bigger changes like map design philosophy will be too hard to implement, but I would love to see some of the smaller things come to fruition.

Yep. Im off the game because of the maps. They can fix everything, but it wont matter if the maps arent any good.

Since they made COD4, Im highly interested in single player, but I dont expect MP to survive. I thought it had a chance to etch its own persistent community, but with the heart of the game gone, and BF1 and COD enveloping it, I just dont think its a good bet to buy this for MP.
