Overwatch Sombra ARG - No one is ready for Sombra [Up2: New Model Leaks]

i haven't been following this, but the amount of time they've spent hyping a single hero makes me question how much content we're actually going to be getting long-term.

This is a weird comment. First, you admit that you haven't been following the subject, and then you proceed to make an unfounded conjecture which assumes knowledge on the subject.

Blizzard hasn't really spent much time at all hyping Sombra or any other heroes. Fans are doing that on their own. Blizzard only has a silly ARG running for Sombra because they thought it would be cool to have a mysterious character like this "interact" with fans before "revealing" herself. It's unique to Sombra. The amount of actual effort going into teasing the character is minuscule.

So far they have released one hero, one map, one minigame, and hundreds of new cosmetic items. None of these were teased for any period of time. They were all released at the same time they were announced. All of these were also released after the first initial Sombra tease. Sombra being an ongoing tease is stupid, but that's just how AGRs are. It is not an indication of anything else.

I swear it's really next week!

Seriously, I have a bad feeling that we're gonna have to wait until Blizcon.

For all the talk of characters/maps and microtransaction whining, I really don't think there will be much to a content discussion about Overwatch until it's bean out for a year.

Or hell, how about six months? Like, these discussions always feel like they completely ignore the context the game came out at the end of May. Little hard to take the complaints seriously because of that.

But I digress.

it's a bit late for that when people at launch were complaining that the game didn't have enough content

A bit late for what? Those people sounded silly then and sound silly now. "Quality over quantity" is a principle we (should) learn in elementary school.

Too bad that can't be said for Overwatch players. 15 million of us, and solo queue is still a nightmare!

i said i haven't been following it, not that i haven't been hearing about it. and by "time" i obviously didn't mean the actual amount of time they've spent wokring on the ARG. i'm talking about the time that's elapsed since they first started it. they know exactly how much hype they've been creating, and i think it's gone on too long for a single hero.

as for the content they've released, it doesn't really seem like a lot to me when you consider the relative barebones nature of the release and the amount of money they make off loot crates.

i love the game and i'm happy with it, i'm just saying that the content feels a little slow for my liking. i'd prefer they just had paid dlc.

both matter, and it's silly to pretend like we can't value both simultaneously.

We can. Getting one high quality piece of content every month is a pretty good balance of quality and quantity.

Launching the game with 21 heroes, 12 maps, and 4 game modes is by no means limited content. In 3 months we have gotten a new hero, a new map, and a Summer Games event. In the next few months we will be getting more hereos , maps, and events.

There's nothing remotely slow or insignificant about the content they are putting out, especially the quality of it. The new map shows that given more time, the quality can really shine. It has nothing to do with it being paid or free content, it just takes time to make and polish.

None of this has anything to do with the Sombra tease anyway.

you kinda can't. People need to realize what goes into creating ANYTHING in games. Characters and Maps take a while...good ones at the very least. Sure Blizzard could easily shit out samey characters/maps with new coat of paint to pump up the ammount of content but something tells me people wouldn't be too hype about that. Sure could it be a bit faster? yeah. But understand these things take time. Longer than many here realize.

By my rough math it will take at least 75 days to get to 100%

I'm coming down to 50 days, somehow.
Rounding some things up the counter is now at ~10%. So we need another 90%.
Judging from that reddit post we get ~1.8% every 24h (+-0.1%). 90% divided by ~1.8%/day is ~50 days.
I am relatively certain I did that right.

So Sombra in October, then? I hope Blizzard will still throw us a bone every once in a while, because a countdown for a countdown for a reveal or release that's almost 2 months away is the worst way to end an ARG.

It honestly might be one of the worst ARGs I've seen, which is a complete shame since the entire Overwatch universe is really entertaining.

I wouldn't say it's bad. Just, ending on just a countdown is always a stupid idea, especially if it takes almost two months to fill up.
Sometimes I think the people creating these ARGs think that we will take basically as long to finish it. But they always underestimate the internet.

I shit you not, this just happened in my chat.

Trust me, no photoshop.

All of these were also released after the first initial Sombra tease. Sombra being an ongoing tease is stupid, but that's just how AGRs are. It is not an indication of anything else.

I think most ARG's are built up initially as having very little to no connection toward the intended promotion until the end (hence the game, I suppose) -- maybe I'm wrong.

I hope the spray of the creepy kid with a broken arm is Sombra or another hero. Most confusing and hilarious thing in game. Who is this kid!? Why is he in the game as a spray? My whole group uses it and hilarity ensues.

Summary of the Sombra ARG as of today August 30th year of our lord 2016.

This is a great vid.

I'm still under the assumption Sombra is going to be Blizzcon thing. I think whoever is coming up with the ARG at Blizzard didn't expect the internet folks to figure out some of this so quickly. So now they really need to space it out. Maybe they started it all too soon, but they couldn't predict people figuring it out immediately. That's a really hard game to balance.

Maybe a number of staff at Blizzard had somehow never heard of DRM locks being cracked within a week. I believe you, it's just astoundingly naive of designers to underestimate internet folk, at this point in time.

It's quite amazing that some people are so savvy they can piece it together. I know I personally can't what so ever. It all really started with the Ana vid, which was something I watched of course but never noticed the hidden code to begin with. I'm sure millions never saw it either.
A few weeks ago I remember a gaf topic about a Sonic the Hedgehog ARG that I think started on Twitter. There was a YouTube video released spelling out all the ARG stuff gone onto it. That video I believe was made by the ARG creators. Maybe nobody cared enough to find clues for poor old Sonic, but it's the extreme opposite of what happened here with Overwatch. I think it's a really tough balancing act, releasing information for an ARG, when you make a new clue, how soon to give another hint ect. Like the sky thing in this Overwatch ARG. People were on the wrong track and then Blizzard set em straight again. Maybe they shouldn't have done that?

Edit: Wow, wrong thread. I blame how tired I am+seeing Duckroll in here.

I'll come back to this one once something happens.

Someone opened a ticket as Sombra and this was Blizzard's response:

So, Sombra is definitely geared towards hacking, thematically? Rather than the "Spy/Disguise" powers people thought she might have.

I wonder if she can "hack" the environment or players. Make the payload mover faster or slower under certain conditions or make enemy players do negative damage or something.
